I am aware that some institutions charge DO students for away rotations b/c there is no reciprocity between MD & DO institutions (pls correct me if wrong as this is how I understand it). So for instance, MD school A has 5 slots at a clinical site, and MD school B offers 5 slots at their clinical site in exchange.

Does anyone know if the new MD schools with no home hospital (ex. Roseman) will run into difficulties when the students apply for away rotations, ex. Paying away rotation fees? Roseman is interesting bc there are only affiliated clinical sites & from what I understand, they’re paying to reserve those slots instead of outright getting access to them.

I've been out of medical school for a few years, now just past the board certification stage, so I am not up to speed about payment. However, I did away rotations and never had to pay anything, if I remember correctly.

I did one rotation as an audition to try to get into the residency. I also did a rotation for fun (and to learn). It was a 4th year radiology rotation in a fun city, located in a ritzy neighborhood. Learned a lot of radiology under no pressure since I was not applying to get in. Got a good evaluation and enjoyed the city.

I probably did the rotation in February so it was clear that I wasn't trying to get into their residency. Near the end of the rotation, I had to give a presentation at a department conference. My impression is that medical schools in nice neighborhoods of interesting cities to visit include Northwestern, Cornell, UCLA. I don't know enough about Georgetown, UC Irvine, UC San Diego to make a conclusion about their locations.
