Please note, I also posted this in the Canadian forum, but perhaps someone here can help also with resources within the US.

I found out 3 days ago, after waiting forever on 3 waitlists, that I got into Eastern Virginia Medical School 😎😎

Unfortunately, I now have a huge problem. Here are my circumstances: I'm a Canadian citizen, and I have spent my last ten years living in the US -- I went to high school and college in the US, and I'm currently working in the US. My parents are also Canadian citizens and also have lived in the US for the past ten years. None of us have green cards. My family doesn't have the money to finance my med school for all four years, which is ($50k tuition + $15k living costs) x 4 years.

I'm also in no man's land in terms of getting a loan--
1. I cannot get any American-based student loan without an American cosigner. I can't find a cosigner, especially since they gets no benefit from signing and only take on risk.
2. I'm not eligible for US government loans.
3. I cannot get any student line of credit (loc) at a Canadian bank for three reasons
3a. some banks only give loc for students going to Canadian schools
3b. some banks require the student to be a resident of Canada (to have lived in Canada in the past year)
3b. some banks require the cosigner to be a Canadian citizen living in Canada
3d. All the banks I have checked have limitation(s) a, b, and/or c.
4. Since I haven't lived in Canada for over 10 years, I haven't looked at provincial/government loans since I don't have any residency in any provinces.

So the problem is, I can't get a US loan because my parents can't cosign such a loan as Canadian citizens. But I can't a Canadian loan because my family doesn't live in Canada and don't have any credit in Canada.

I really am not sure what I can do at this point to secure loans for med school. I can ask my family, but I don't want my parents to put all their savings into my first year of med school without me somehow knowing that I can pay for the last three.

Any help would be immensely appreciated!

First of all, congrats!!!! You can breathe now that you are off the waitlist. 😀

Um, so i'm a bit confused... your parents have been working in the US for the past TEN YEARS with just a work visa and you never in that time applied for citizenship?

Quebec government does not cover medical school students for loans/bursarys, but BC government does (including many US med schools). You might not be eligible for a PROVINCIAL loan but you may still be eligible for a loan from CSLG (the federal government loan). I haven't looked too hard but i'm not sure if you would be eligible for the loans studying outside of canada but it's worth a shot...

Good luck! I'm sure if you have the ability to get in, you will be able to pay for it somehow.

I was in the same situation....
So I got a green card....
Sorry, I'm not much help.
This is one of the reasons I'm a non trad, I cannot go back to China, but I can't go to med school here.
How comd you didn't apply for med school in Canada?

You must have relatives either in the US or Canada who would be willing to cosign a loan for you. It's hard to believe you don't have an aunt, grandfather, cousin, etc. in either country.

How have you lived in the country so long without a green card? And your parents?

Hmm I know you said you checked a bunch of banks again, but did that include RBC? I know I've talked to them before and they have LoC for a lot of Canadian students going to the US for med.... (albeit all the ones I'm aware of lived in Canada prior to med school).

Even if your mom can't finance your education, wouldn't she be willing to cosign? I'm assuming here your mom trusts you to pay back the loan ofc.... (and that her credit isn't horrific). Med student LoC have pretty competitive interest rates (at least in Canada).

You MIGHT qualify for the federal portion of OSAP (or equivalent if you're not from Ontario). I didn't look that closely as the eligibility, but since it's the federal portion it shouldn't be tied to residence in any particular province, and you are a Canadian citizen. It wouldn't be much - maybe 7 or 8k/year, but it's interest-free. You should look into that more.

Hi everyone,

Thank you all for your input. I'll try and address everyone's points and also give you more of an update of what I am doing..

Yes, and my dad has worked about 5-6 jobs in the past 10 years. Currently, my parents are considered landed immigrants and are on the "waitlist" for green cards, which can come next year or in 3 years. Since I'm over 21, I will have to go through the green card process myself, but without a professional job I won't be able to get one until after med school.

Actually, I was looking up for the Alberta Student Loans yesterday night (the last place I lived in Canada), and it seems that I qualify for the loan  Only problem is that I haven't been in alberta since 2000 and went to middle school there, AND I've had my name changed, so there are still some hurdles to go through before I get this loan. If I do get it, though, I'm looking at $13k/year from Alberta and $7k/year from Canada = $20k/year which will go a long way into helping pay for medical school.

How comd you didn't apply for med school in Canada?

I did--I got rejected for having a GPA under 3.8 and one school even rejected me for having a verbal score UNDER 11!! It was a waste of money to apply.

Well I'm actually Chinese, I was born in China, and my WHOLE extended family lives in China. That's why I can't get any cosigners. I have one relative who is willing to lend us $50-70k which can help pay for one year of med school. Believe me, we've tried everything we could to get a green card, but it's really tough in the US =/

I will definitely call ALL the banks this coming week, explain my circumstances, and beg them to let me take up a line of credit with them. If I can get even one bank to agree, then I'm all set, but until then...

Both my parents are Canadian citizens, and don't have green cards. They also don't live in Canada, which also makes it harder to cosign a Canadian loan, but I will investigate this and see.

Yeah, I think I may qualify for the Alberta Student Loan -- see above.

I've heard of organizations or communities that can help sponsor med students in special situations or for certain return-of-service contracts, but I am at a loss as to where to start. Does anyone have any other tips/suggestions? Thanks a lot to everyone!
