I'm currently a lab tech/research assistant and my position is only funded through February. Med school will start in August. Any suggestions for how to earn money in that time? I was hoping to find some work for March through May. Its not enough time for a normal job, so I was wondering if anyone on here had been in a similar situation or had any ideas?

please no waitress/mcdonalds suggestions.

advertise yourself as a private tutor. email different list serves, put up flyers in high schools, etc. i did this in the beginning of the year and i have enough clients to work around 15-20 hours a week, charging $50 an hour. pretty good gig imo.

Anyone else have ideas for this? I'll be in a similar situation in that I'll be graduating in late May, but I'll need some income during June and July before medical school starts.

If you search online, there's some agencies that list temp jobs; just plug in your zip code and they can give you a list. That may be your best bet since some most places will be unwilling to hire you since your leaving soon .

I just googled "summer part-time jobs" and got some good hits. I know places like Target, Starbucks, and other stores hire during the summer. Most of the kids they hire are from high school, but I think you will be more competitive. Those are the type of jobs that will hire you for 3-4 months.

You can try emailing faculty inquiring about research positions. Be up front and tell them that you can start in February and leave around mid-August. Not many want to take on someone for such a short time but all you need is one person to be interested.

You're not going to find anything professional for the summer. Your options are pretty much limited to tutoring, slinging burgers, or landscaping. Maybe temp office work, depending on how large of a city you live in.

Perhaps a retail job, like Walgreens or CVS.

$50/hr? Wow - I never thought to charge that high of a rate when I tutored. I felt bad about $20/hr.

Thank you. The lack of good suggestions (besides the tutoring) has lead me to the same conclusion. I think I'll just enjoy my time and maybe tutor a bit if I need the money.

to the person who googled summer jobs for me and came back with starbucks and target - thanks for that.

Sorry that you don't want to waitress, but this is the best way to earn a lot of money over little time, and serves as a great "summer job". Most other jobs won't waste their time hiring/training you if you're just going to leave in 4 months.

I'd love to be a Starbucks barista for a bit. I feel like that could serve me well in med school 😀
