PCO clinic

ride with someone else/ride the bus/ride the train/fly on a magic carpet.

may i just add to this post?
i was just wondering how reliable and how often the bus systems are in this PA area near the school and clinic? i was looking at the transit website and it looks like about 10 minutes, i'm wondering if it's comparable to the NYC transit. It's $2 for a ride compared to $2.50 in ny!

i'm just curious as to why the bus option isn't as commonly discussed on this forum?

because i'm sure i'm not the only one here who can't necessarily afford a car, and doesn't want to depend on others always for a ride! 😕

When I went to my interview @ PCO, both of the students who showed our group around had a car of their own. Hitching a ride in first year might be doable (as they said), but after that it gets tricky/annoying. Public transit in that area isn't the greatest (I've heard bus service doesn't run late). Imo, you're gonna need/really want a car.

I am a first year at PCO. I do not have a car, it is certainly more convenient to have a car because you can not walk/ride a bike to clinic- it is to far, it is a very busy road you would have to travel on and it is not particularly safe. The bus/train system , although good and reliable does not really have direct or safe routes from school to the clinic. I have tried all of these methods since as I said I do not have a car, in-fact I live only about 2 miles from school and ride my bike to school every day. With all of this being said, when it is your turn to be in clinic (as a first year 6-8 times your fall semester, and 12-15 times your spring semester) you will be going there at the same time as another group of people in your year--there is always, always someone to get a ride with. In fact many people with cars do not drive them often because they car-pool. So you can get by without a car as long as you can ask for a ride. You will never be the only one at clinic coming from school, there will always be someone there to give you a ride back to the school area.

i know this may be a stupid question to ask, but do some people carpool to get to school as well? i found a great location price wise but walking/bus-wise its about an hour to get to school =/
i was thinking of biking, but i'm kinda scared about how safe that is, especially when it's raining or snowing.

just putting it out there.. if anything i'll look into getting a moped 😳

Where did you decide to live? I'm seriously interested in Brookview which is 1.9 miles from the main campus. Needless to say I do have a car and still need to find a room-mate.

I'm sure that once you meet people you can find a carpool since we'll all be on mostly the same schedule.

As a side-note someone posted on the PCO Class of 2015 facebook group asking if people had cars and a ton of people responded with "yes". You can get a much older car, such as 1993 Honda Accord for example, and only pay $2500. Might be worth the investment if you don't want to rely on others or public transportation to get everywhere next year.

It's harder to carpool to school everyday because people have different lab/clinic schedule. Find a roommate with a car and similar last name alphabet increases the chance of you getting the same schedule and you guys can carpool easier.

i've decided on towers at wyncote as i've mentioned.. i've found a very reasonably priced room with someone who will be a 2nd year when i start school, but i think it would be quite burdensome to always depend on her for a ride as our schedules will most likely be different 🙁

i'm looking into getting a license before i leave the country for the summer, but i'm just concerned, not only with the cost of getting a car, but also the monthly insurance/gas costs involved. i literally have no savings though i've been working since high school 😱 been going towards general life expenses in general i guess:scared:

may i just ask, despite the weather concerns, does anyone how the biking route is from there to the school safety wise? like roads and if there is a notable crime rate of sorts? thanks 👍

I would not bike to the clinic because it's ~3 miles from school and you have to dress up for all clinic schedules. You probably don't want to ruin your dress by something on the road and show up sweaty in the room. Also, some times you will have the night clinic schedule which runs latest to 9 PM, not a good time to bike home alone. Please just carpool with someone if you do not have the car, it is very easy to find a ride. You will find that people here are very friendly and are willing to help out a fellow classmate whenever possible.

thank you for the concern! i actually meant if you thought it was feasible to bike from Towers at Wyncote to PCO the school! i'm sorry if i wasn't being clear! so far from what i've read on the forums, getting a ride to clinic at least in first year shouldn't be so bad if you get to know someone from your group.

getting to school mon-friday however is another concern for me, because I realize i can't really carpool every day with someone, especially since i don't know any first years yet! i was just wondering if a bike might be doable, although inconvinient, i'm worried more about how safe it might be 😱

p.s. i am already planning on rooming with a 2nd year who does have a car, but i realize i can't always depend on her for a ride~
