i don't really understand how any school can have an unranked waitlist. there has to be some kind of a system, otherwise it would take the adcom forever to review everyone's file "periodically". they have to have something in some type of order - but maybe they are just told not to tell anyone?
it just doesn't add up. i could maybe understand if the wailist was only 30-50 people, but for all i know it could be made up of hundreds. what's the system?!?!?!?
At least some schools use the waitlist to balance out the class. For example, a school aims to have 10% URMs but after the deposit due date only 5% of the incoming class is URMs. The ADCOM would go to the waitlist and admit more URM's to try to get closer to their 10% goal.
In such a system, there's no way to rank the waitlist without knowing what a school needs "more" of in a particular class.
