Is everyone using an advisor's LOR?

I'd imagine I can get one but I've never had a relationship with mine. Mainly because I know more about the whole medical school thing than she does. I know many of you have the same stories about advisors not being helpful.

I was looking in the fine print for a substitution......I suppose I'll call and see what they say.
 
The Dir. of Admissions has said over and over again that if a lot of people from your school apply there they will know if you have a committee or not. Everyone stresses the committee letter if its available.

You can use the following:

a) Pre-med committee
b) Pre-med advisor

If these are not possible:

c) Academic advisor
d) Dean of the college of your major

Yeah Cbear thats what I thought. Sadly I wouldn't like any of the LOR's I'd get from any of those! Guess I'll have to go ask my dean.

If you wouldn't like any, go with the most objective, succinct, neutral one. It'll meet the requirement without detracting from your app.
 
What I did was just to get the generic letter from the dean that basically says that I attended school and did not cause any trouble just to meet the requirement, but then sent other letters from people who actually knew me. I asked if they would still consider those letter and they said that they definitely would, and that the additional letters would enhance my application.

Cbear, you look alot like that guy from scrubs. Has anyone ever told you that?
 
So another random question:

For the secondary, it says "if you're a re-applicant..." and to write an essay about what you've done to improve. I'm an MD reapplicant, but not a DO reapplicant. So do I answer the question or not? The wording is a bit vague.

i took it to mean that it was if you were a reapplicant to pcom only. but I can see your side too, the wording is a bit ambiguous. to them you are a first time applicant, so i wouldn't address it. but thats just my two cents.

just submitted my secondary today and i am a reapplicant. good luck!:luck:
 
how many out of state does PCOM typically accept? Im from texas and I want to know what my chances would be

I think the vast majority of people never had a relationship with theirs. The substitution is the dean for your college/major or whatever. I was in the same situation. I had 3 advisors during college. One for engineering, which I changed out of. One for the time before I was "officially" in my major and then the one for my advisor. I went to her once. They essentially assign us to a professor with similar academic interests. I had to email her and then I sent her my transcripts, my personal statement, my resume, and a thesis I wrote and she did a recommendation for me. It sucks because I have awesome recommendations from people that truly know me well, but whatever.
 
How long did you guys have to wait for a secondary after you were verified with AACOMAS? Did it come email or regular mail? It's been forever.

I received the secondary by mail 5 days after I was verified.
 
How long was everyones response to the "What health care related experiences have you had?" question? Was it just a list type answer that you could fit onto the secondary form or did you elaborate on your experiences?
 
I wrote a list. This list included my hospital volunteering and shadowing. I didn't elaborate because PCOM takes a good look at the AACOMAS (or so they say). Also, it didn't indicate they wanted an explanation. I only had one significant shadowing experience and since I talked about it in my AACOMAS personal statement and then the additional essay PCOM wanted I felt elaboration wasn't necessary. As far as my hospital volunteering went, it was at a hospital in the area and the program is well known and shouldn't be foreign to PCOM so they more than likely know the gist of what I did there. I don't think it will come back to get me.
 
well if it's any consolation. If/when you guys get the interview invite, it means you're pretty solid at being accepted... When I did my go-around i found some figures that indicated they accept ~75% of the people they interview... So just don't be a **** when you go in there... throw up some gang signs and say you know dannmann99

the committe meets about once a month. So it depends on when you interview and when they meet.

I GOT AN INTERVIEW AT GA-PCOM!!!! Definitely my #1! Any suggestions? Anyone else interviewing on the 6th of October? Also, any one know some of the typical questions they ask? Thanks!

you wouldn't want to share your stats, would you? also, there's a great place to see interview feedback with questions from last year. I forget where it is. Search or ask Chocolate Bear. He'll give you the link.

Thanks for the link. My stats aren't the greatest. I work in the ER at our rural hospital as a CNA, though, which I believe has helped. Keep your heads up! 👍

It seems the first round of interviews or close to the first round is starting with me, the 24th of September. Do you think I'd be fortunate enough to interview right before they convene? One could only wish, I guess.

you would be very fortunate lol. My guess is they'll convene October 20th. Good luck though, and I heard that if you buy a first year lunch during your day at the school your chances skyrocket. So if you run into me.... well...

So I finally got the secondary letter mailed to me. Did anyone else think that this was probably the nicest admissions letter out of all the schools?

They addressed it "Dear Future Physician"

"I am enthusiastic about the prospect of you entering our Class of 2013".


Another nice thing, they have one of the cheaper secondary app fees.

lol.

in lab we always get posed these practical questions to our dissections. like 'patient presents with pain in back cheek and bad taste in mouth, attending sends him for a dental visit, but resident PCOM student of class of ____ asked for an additional test and they found out it really wasn't a tooth problem what is it.'

For the first 3 weeks the one guy would always say from the PCOM class of 2013... completely not getting the fact that we're 2012... someone brought it up to him and he said: lol, it doesnt matter im sure there will be some of you who end up class of 2013

reading your post made me think of that lol
