PCOM or UNECOM? What would you choose? Why?

No seriously, they're both great schools. PCOM happens to be my number one choice for DO schools though bc it's so close to home and has an awesome rep in the philly area. Both are excellent choices.

I am choosing PCOM because I like the clinical exposure a bit better than UNECOM. PCOM also because it is closer to where I can see myself for residency. With that said, I really like UNECOM, the people there and everything about the school/location are appealing. I also get the impression that UNECOM stresses family practice more than PCOM. Not that I have anything against fp, its just that I am going in to medical school with an open mind to the direction I take as a physician and I think there is a bit more opportunity to specialize going to PCOM vs UNECOM. Just my two cents...

UNE is FAR more diverse than the population around the school. I have seen few non-caucasian folk in Maine. Perhaps they don't like the climate. Many folks have a misconception about Maine -- they think it's always cold and snowy. Not true. But you can't tell them that. So if you're disappointed with the lack of diversity, rather than running to places with more diversity, try adding to ours.

UNE had a pretty decent amount of diversity from my standpoint, especially compared to DMU, though we aren't comparing those 2 schools here. However, there seemed to be quite a bit more diversity at UMDNJ than either of those. I've noticed that many people tend to go to school closest to where they are from if given the chance.

(This has been an unusually mild winter for the Northeast, by the way.)

Before going to UNE, I heard all these great things about the area where it was, and I was quite disappointed. PCOM is in Philly, but more of the suburb area vs. the downtown, which I really like. UNE I felt was more for families versus I felt right at home at PCOM being a young, single student. Finally, as many other people stated, PCOM has many opportunities for rotations/PG work. Plus, you can stay in the city of Philly for your rotations, or in PA versus at UNE you'll have to travel to areas all over the northeast. Plus Philly is slightly closer to my home.

PCOM isnt in the city...its more at the outskirts just within the city limits.

You can live within 5 miles of PCOM and never experience Philadelphia the city...only main line and Manayunk.

HAHAHA that is so true!! The rich brats that I went to school with believe Philadelphia exists between 2nd street (old city) and 42nd st (the outskirts of penn) Anything past 2nd street is unknown to them and anything past 42nd, that is the true west philly, is too "ghetto" for them, although west philly has some amazing architecture and homes, if only they explored. I guess my point is....the relevance of the city of your school is limited to how much you'd want to venture it. It wouldn't make a difference what school you choose if you're a bookworm who's restricted to their campus. In such a case, I'd choose UNE. The scenic view must be very calming. Although this is strictly from the pictures I've seen of it :-/

Yea, I know, I went to the open house. I would have liked it better if it were in the city.
