PCSOM Class of 2008

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I'm a big baseball fan. Is anyone else here a big baseball fan?

I noticed that there are several rookie league teams around the area. There are the Danville Braves, Kingsport Mets, a team in Johnson City, TN, and a team in Pulaski, VA.

Going to a minor league game will be something that is fun to do when we want to take a break from the studying. Well, it will be fun for me at least. I'm a big Atlanta Braves fans and try to keep up with their prospects in the minors some. This would be a good opportunity to see the Danville Braves in action and getting a look at young players like Chris Vines and CJ Bressoud.

Hello everyone!

I wanted to let you know that I was in Pikevegas yesterday and purchased a Pike County Newspaper. I have looked at the Classified section and found some houses/apartments/mobile homes for sale or rent. Most of these are listed on the webpage on our site, but there are a couple missing. If anyone would like the information, just let me know.

Oh, I also wanted to let you know about the banks in the area. I listed some info on our site about the bank I chose and listed their benefits. It looks like a pretty solid deal. Anyway, just email or PM me with any questions.

Man was it hot in Pikeville yesterday. They were having the Hatfield-McCoy festival in downtown. Looked pretty interesting, but was not real busy at the time I visited the festivities.

Keith, I like baseball, but not a big "Braves" fan. I am a die hard Cincinnati Reds fan. Baseball is not real big in West Virginia, except for High School. Everyone here loves WVU and Marshall Football, and one of my personal favorites, NASCAR.

Misty and Ryan. I have some updated pics of the Autumn Suites. I will try to send them to you later today. It looks like they have a solid 3 to 4 weeks of construction left. Our parking lot was completed too.

Hope everyone had a great weekend. Talk with you soon. August is closer than we think!

Aaron

I spent this weekend in Pikeville looking for apartments, and found a couple of places. I was at the Hatfield and McCoy reunion when I asked a person working one of the tents about property in the area, she basically took my hand and led me to the newspaper. I didn't find anything in the paper, but later I saw her, and she told me that she had made some phone calls and there was a woman who runs a local complex who had an apartment. I was shocked, all I asked for was some advice. So she gave me her number and told me to call her that evening. Then later that day she hunted me down again, and introduced me to the sister of the women who had the open apartment, the sister put in a call for me, and told me to give her a call if her sister did not call me. I then went to the complex and there was her sister waiting for me, she showed me the apartment and I think that I am going to take it. What a community!

Aaron sorry about missing you at subway, I had trouble getting on SDN on friday, and didn't know any other way to contact you. Next time I am in town I will call you. I also visited an apartment on your list and the woman spoke very highly of you, so I am supposed to thank you for putting her Apt on the list. She can now vacation with the peace of mind that renting her apartment brings. Your website is top notch.

Was anyone else in Pikeville this weekend? The festival was nice, not as well attended as I expected, but fun. Then the storms moved in. I could not believe the effect the rain had on the surrounding hills, the roads flooded almost imediatly, and the runoff resembled a mud slide across the road. Pretty intimidating for my small car, but I managed to not get washed off the road.

Well, I may be moving into a 2 bedroom and would like a roommate. If anyone is looking for a place to stay let me know. I will find out what my situation is soon.

Hey Jeremy,

I went to the Hatfield McCoy Fesitival on Saturday afternoon. It was very pleasant, but man was it hot and humid! I am glad that you found a place to stay. Was it by any chance Ridge Cliff? If so, I live right across the street from you. Janet is very nice. If you need to contact me, I just got my new Cingular phone. I will email you with the number.

Were you by any chance in US Bank to open an account. Patsy told me that several students from PCSOM had opened accounts there on Friday. It was a sweet deal.

See you later Jeremy, and thanks for the compliment on the site!

Aaron,
If you get a chance, send me those pictures as well. My email address is on the website. Thanks man.

I am coming to Pikevegas this weekend ( the 19-20th of June) to the Anthony Suites. If you guys have any tips to give me on places like grocery stores or restaurants I would really appreciate it and if any of you are going to be there please let me know.

TOBEDO- I would suggest going to Wal-Mart or Food City for groceries. As far as resturants go it's a toss up between the Mexican Resturants as the best, I like El Poncho...others think that El Azul is the best. Peking is also good (the one on North Mayo Trail/ US 23 North). Also, a must in Pikeville is to go to Dairy Cheer for a Smashburger and Onion Rings... Other then that Applebees and Bob Evans are about as good as it gets. You should stop by my apartment (I might be in...) it's 202 of the Anthony.

The guy I'm renting my apartment from says that the Applebees in Pikeville is the worst Applebees in America.

While I have not been to every Applebees in America, I found the one in Pikeville to be no worse than any other. The fact that they don't serve booze on Sunday is a strike agnist them. It is a strike agnist all dry counties for that matter.

E-

p.s. booze = good. I like booze. 😍

If you are into Italian food, try Chirico's downtown. Not bad.

Joey Chirico used to own a Chirico's Restaurant in my homtown of Logan. If the one if Pikevegas is as good as the one in Logan used to be, we are in for a real treat. I loved their food. Very good stuff. I wish Pikevegas had an Olive Garden.

Hey Aaron,

I never did get the most recent pics you have of our the Autumn Suites. I think when you emailed them, my mailbox was too full. I'm getting ready to clean my mailbox out, so could you try sending them again please? Thanks!

Misty

Hey guys, I've been to the Applebees in Pikeville a few times and I have to tell you, compared to the one in Bowling Green Kentucky, it is on top of the food chain. Bowling Green has more restaurants per capita than any other city and not only does the Applebees stink here, the TGIF is worse. I used to love both these restaurants, and now I have to enjoy them in other cities. It is a shame to have two popular places here that stink. Anyway, I'm sure we will all get by. That smasburger sounds good to me!

Hey Misty!

I sent you the email again this morning. It said that it successfully sent it to you. If you did not get it, please let me know and I will post it on the web. See you soon.

What's Up Sam!

We have a lot of restaurants in Huntington also. Most of them are pretty decent too. I have not ate at Applebee's for over a year, but the two here in Huntington are really good. A couple of the first year students told me that some of them hang out at Applebee's after their exams. That would be a pretty good place to unwind I would imagine.

Anyway, hope everyone is having a great week. I only have two weeks of work left, so maybe I can relax a little before school starts! I dont know if I will be in Pikeville this weekend, but if anyone would like my cell phone number, just PM or email me. Hope to see you all soon.

Aaron

Yeah, I guess after the first exams we will be looking for a watering hole to relax at. Glad to hear you will be finishing up work over the next few weeks...me too. I'm taking the family to Destin FL. for 8 days to do some unwinding myself. Hope to do some fishing and diving while I'm there too. Take care and I will be in touch before we get to Pikeville.

See Ya,

Sam

All the restaurant advice is very helpful. I have only been to pikeville a few times and i am still learning alot. Also i agree about the alcohol thing. It will be nice to find a place to chill and kick back when we have time. cant wait to meet you all.

Hello Everyone,

I wanted to share something with some of the current PCSOM students, as well as the class of 2008. I was at work yesterday and on the way to my office after reviewing some charts a very pleasant lady came up to me while I was waiting on the elevator near the ICU waiting room. She was telling me that she was there with her husband and that she was from Pikeville. I mentioned to her that I was getting ready to move to Pikeville, and her face lit up like a Christmas tree. She then asked if I was transferring to Pikeville Methodist Hospital. I told her that I was going to med school in Pikeville and her face lit up once again.

She said that the school was a great asset for the people of Pikeville and went on to tell me the inpact that DOs and OMT therapy has had on her husband, who is a LBP sufferer. She spoke very highly of the current students at Pikeville and said that she and her husband hate to see the summer come because the students are not always available to give her husband OMT for his back pain.

I think that this is something important to share with everyone at PCSOM becuase it puts things into perspective. We are not always aware of how what we do affects the lives of those around us. This lady thought enough of PCSOM and its students to share that story with a complete stranger. What we do makes a difference in peoples' lives and we should keep this in mind when we start to doubt our ability as students. Just wanted to share this story with everyone. Great job PCSOM students and alumni!

I heard that bro! I like to destress myself after a tough exam. I am glad that you are getting some time to take your family to FL. Hope you enjoy the fishing and diving. I plan on going to VA in a couple of weeks to catch up on some fishing and golf. See you soon.

Hey Aaron, would you mind sending me the updated pics of Autumn Suites.
Thanks

Aaron,
Is there a chance you could just put your pics of the Autumn Suites on the website under the appropriate litsing in the appartments link? They seem to be a hot commodity.

Hey guys and gals,

Anyone else get the shaft on the Expected Family Contribution (EFC) on their FASFA? Mine is like 9k which makes my award from uncle Sam lame. If you are in this boat, how's the water? Any ideas?

Eric-

Hey Eric,

My EFC was around 3500 bucks. When I talked with Teresa back in February or so, she informed me that I would be eligible for the 38,500 from the government. I would assume that most of the people in our class will get the full amount, but I could be wrong. I took out a private loan in addition to what I asked for in Subsidized and Unsubsidized loans from Access Group.

I hope this helps you out Eric. See you soon.

Aaron when you applied for the private loan did you have to have staff from PCSOM fill out a portion of the paper work? I was gonna do my application but figured by the time I sent them the paper, they signed it, and got it back to me that I might as well just wait till Aug. when I am down there to do the form. Any comments or suggestions?

Aaron,

If I'm not much mistaken, I think that everyone automatically qualifies for the 38,500 from the governement. When did you get you financial aid papers? The only thing that I've gotten from the financial aid office is a letter saying that my file wouldn't be reviewed until late July, when Teresa gets back from maternity leave 🙁 .

p.s. My EFC is about 14K 😡 😡 . Sometimes, it really sucks having a fulltime job that you make more than minimum wage at.

Hey Dennis,

I talked with Teresa Jones before I applied for the private loan. She told me that I needed to apply for some extra funding to make up the difference between the government award and the actual budget for next year. She told me to apply for the loan (I chose Access Group) and they would send her some information. This was back in February or March. I have not heard from the school or Access Group about the loan. Teresa said that she would try to get everything taken care of before she went on maternity leave, so I am guessing that everything is ok or she would have contacted me.

I may go by her office when I move down to Pikeville in July and she if there is anything else that I need to do. I will let you know when i find something else out. See you later Dennis.

This was my understanding as well. I recieved the same letter from the financial aid office. I guess if there is a problem, they will contact us. See you soon.

DoSouthPaw,

When you mentioned your old apartment being available a few months ago, was it the one that right by a church and M & M car dealership? If so, then I am looking at getting an apartment in the same building and would appreciate any info that you could give me.

I really liked the place. I was in Unit #5 in the first building. If you're really into windows, it would not be the place for you, but I'm a vampire, so it was perfect for me. lol When I was there, there was a wild teenage chick next door who used to have her boyfriend over when her dad was gone to work in the mines. I had to hear them beating the crap out of each other quite a lot, but I saw her the other day and she told me she had moved out and was "getting help" whatever that means...

Anyway, the place is pretty nice, cheap, and Alan Justice is pretty cool. If something breaks you really have to bug him about it. It's not that he doesn't want to fix crap, but he's just got a lot going on, and he'll forget, so just make daily calls till someone shows up. Also, it's only one mile from school which is perfect now that the new garage is done. During Hillbilly Days, you are in a great spot to walk on over, plus you can still get your car out as well. It's like a block from Food City too.

Good luck! If you want anymore info, just ask. See ya!

Is this Alan Justice guy or the Justice Furniture people related to the Tanya Justice, or whatever that is in our class? I remember her saying she was from Pikeville and the place ain't that big. Maybe we could get a deal on furniture.

They might be related, but I doubt it. There are a million Justice's in Pikevegas.

Speaking of Mr. Justice.

DoSouthPaw,

I got a call from him today saying that I had the apartment if I wanted it. I just needed to give him a call and confirm that I still want it. I don't know whether or not to take the apartment or keep looking (I haven't seen it yet). I think I will call him tomorrow and ask him to hold it for two days until I can get to Pikevegas and actually see it. What do ya think?

Yeah, go ahead and ask him to hold it. Heck, if you like it tell him if you can wait on the rent until you move in, he's pretty cool with stuff like that. Good luck! If the one you look at has the big iron burn on the carpet, that was my unit; and no, I wasn't the one who burned it, it was there when I got there. lol

Thanks, that's good to know.

Is there anyone out there that is interested in having a roommate? I leased a townhouse a couple of weeks ago, and it has two bedrooms and two baths. It is a very nice place and is only 2 miles from the school. If there are any females who may be interested, let me know. I have pictures of the inside and outside that I can send you. 🙂 🙂

Hey DOSouthpaw,
Tell me a little more about the AAO as opposed to the AOA. I read one of your posts and you said you tend to stick with the AAO as opposed to the AOA. Anything else I should know? Is the AAO more made up of better skilled clinicians as far as OMM? 😕

The AOA is the American Osteopathic Association. It is the national organization that all DOs more or less are part of. It is the DO version of the AMA.

The AAO is the American Academy of Osteopathy. It is part of the AOA and it is the certifying board in OMT. It regulates OMT certification, OMT residencies, OMT education in schools, and OMT CME events. It is similar to any certifying board like the ACOFP (Osteo Family Practice) etc..

What I was talking about in the other tread is concerning conventions. If you want good drug rep handouts and to politic around, go to an AOA convention. Little OMT, a lot of drugs and a lot of OMT lipservice and a ton of people talking about how important they are in the AOA and what they are doing for everyone nationally. blah

The AAO conventions are quality. High quality OMT but the problem with them is that students cannot go for free. All other certifying organization and the AOA itself do not charge students for conferences, but the AAO does.

Here is their site: http://www.academyofosteopathy.org

The UAAO is the student version. Please join in Aug. lol

Thanks for the info DOSouthpaw, and the web address. 👍 I was wondering if anybody in the class of 2008, or 2007 needed a lifting partner. I would like to get to the gym about 4 times a week, but I definitely need someone to help with motivation and a spot. I was thinking about going in the morning before class, so if anyone is interested let me know.

DOSouthpaw,
I was on the AAO website and i was wondering if PCSOM takes advantage of the visiting clinician program? It sounds like a good way to get good OMM practitioners to Pikeville.(Not that we don't already have one of the best on staff) 😀

I think this is considered talking to myself. 🙁 Later y'all.

I'm planning on lifting after class. If you want to lift then, you can get in touch with me.

Sounds good Keith. 👍

You have to keep me focused then. I need to get back to my good weight when I was playing baseball.

Aaron Earles said:

Best case scenario would be working out mornings and then maybe relax for a bit after class. My aerobic routine consists of about 5 minutes on the bike and the rest of my time i spend lifting. It sounds like Keith lifts too so we should be able to find partners. Been to the strip lately? Seen the suites? I heard that they are ready.
