Get a regular Palm/ Tungsten. It costs $200 bucks or less, enough memory and you can put all your nice medicine programs on there like Stedmans, 5-minute clinical consult and so on.

Pocket PCs are just a waste of money for a medical student unless you also run some sort of business empire.

I got a pocket pc because I wanted wifi. call me crazy.
Me too.

And then I found out that the VPN provided by Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition does not provide sufficient security for my hospital's wireless network. +pissed+

Well, PPC is still cooler than Palm anyway. <3 my x50v

not even so much for the hospital, I like being able to check email etc different places, and I will pretty much be able to ditch carrying my laptop

on a supergeek side note, mine has fingerprint password

And here I thought I was hot stuff because I had a Playstation emulator on mine.

I used to have a Palm, and I used to think it was really cool. But compared to my PPC, it was like a toy. PPC really is like a mini computer. You can do so much more than just run Epocrates. So, if you like gadgets, get a PPC. If you like simplicity, get a Palm.

This is true but you have to really consider the praticality of A pocket PC for a student. What will they use it for? Is the extra cash justified. Virtually every classmate I asked about the PC says its a just a powerful daily planner for them.

I am probably the biggest gadget freak next to James Bond and even have every old Nintendo game on my Pocket PC but I awlays have to remove a blanket of dust from it when I do use it.

If you have the cash to spend, I guess the pocket PC can be yours. You can do so much more with it but do you actually need to do the extra stuff you can do on it considering you already have a desktop PC?

one word: wifi. if palm had it, I would have gone with that in a heartbeat. having used my laptop EVERYWHERE for the last 2 years I knew I wanted it.

I use my PPC all the time. It's awesome. I look up clinical information, check e-mail wirelessly, coordinate my schedule, etc. There's a ton of new applications and more and more are being created each month.

where is everyone getting these playstation and nintendo emulators? SD cards are very cheap these days. :D

Does anyone have any experience with the Lifedrive? I want one but I keep hearing about problems with them.

owning an ipod which I *believe* runs on the same type of drive I would personally avoid them. unless you know for 100% certain you will never, ever, ever, ever drop it or have it fall out of your pocket. then, you are a better person than me.

Palm Tungsten C has wifi built in and has had it for over 3 years. [edit] Plus its cheaper than an equivalent pocket pc.

while I realize informing me that I should "do my research" probably made you feel better about yourself, I do feel you should know I did do my research. the C, while not widely available, has a cumbersome built-in keyboard that eliminated it from my possiblities immediately. not to mention it only costs $50 less than my PPC. but the condescending attitude WAS appreciated.

I apologize Nutmegs. But I have a Tungsten C and have had it for 3 years. They lil keyboard is actually a very fast way to input information and the pen can be used as a mouse. Further, you can use just the pen and ignore the keyboard. yes, it costs more than most palms. But you can buya cheap palm and use the SD slot for wifi. But almost every hospital has internet connections on all their computers, I have never had to use the wifi, and am selling mine to down grade to a cheaper palm.

I'm not talking about the hospital wifi, just about having wifi in general. I do a fair amount of traveling, studying in coffee shops, etc etc and it is very nice to have internet from the PDA. I personally don't care for how much potential screen space the keyboard takes up on the tungsten, but to each his own.

anyone have the new palm lifedrive? Just came out June 1st.

The good:

1) Memory: 4GB - easily the most memory ever for any PDA, hands down.
--it's basically an ipod mini's worth of memory.
2) Wifi, bluetooth, etc.
3) fast processor
4) weighs 8oz. 1 ounce heavier than the old palms and 20x the memory.

The bad:
1) cost ($450) - way to expensive right now IMO
2) no camera (big deal)
3) people are saying there are delays in b/w running programs.

what do you think?

Hey everyone.

So, what about program availability. For a while, all I kept hearing was that palm is better, both in terms of availability and cheapness. But then I talked to a classmate that's a real gadget guy and he says pretty much all the softwear is available on both platforms. He said it would only be a problem in trying to receive beamed softwear from people who used the other platform.

Do people beam important softwear that often to make it that much more wortwhile to get a palm?

The good thing about the palms, as you may have noticed, is that the programs are available and are usually free... like from your classmates, etc. Just ask around. I'm sure some genius will eventually figure a way out to make all programs free for pocket pc as well.

Okay my fellow nerds, here is the problem. I want to buy one of these computer things you guys are talking about, but when it comes to technology stuff I am absolutely ******ed. So if someone would please educate me on first what is a palm piolet and what is pocket pc, what are they useful for (everyone at my school is going crazy (its the begining of 3rd year) buying this crap and I feel left out cause I don't even know what they do), what are these "programs" you guys keep talking about and how much do they run, what is a good brand and how much does it cost, and finally, can't I just use one of those pocket pharm books that drug reps throw at us? Sorry, too many questions. Keep in mind that I like something simple (I don't think I need a wireless internet), but very good quality. Your input greatly appreciated. Word to your mothers. Peace out.

yes, you can use paper materials and get by just fine. In fact, if you tend to be one of those people who are a little behind on the tech curve (and that's fine) I would actually NOT recomend getting one. They are not magical, they are not essential, I just like one because I know I tend to use things like this, and integrate them into my life pretty well. Could I do the same with paper? Sure. It's a matter of personal preference. When you see a resident using one, ask what they're doing and see if it might be something you're interseted it. The worst thing you can do is go out and drop the cash on something you won't be likely to use.

I agree that wifi is great to have on a pda, but aren't there plenty of palm os pda's w/ wifi? I have a two year old clie, and it has wifi (although I had to pay extra for the card).

Getting "free" software is still easier with palm os I believe, although there might be free pocket pc software out there too that I wouldn't know about since I don't use it. Although, I know as of a couple years ago when i bought my pda, there was not even a pocket pc skyscape keygen available (by now that might have changed).

There are two main advantages to pocket pc's. One is that they're like little windows os computers. So you can have powerpoint, word, outlook, etc as if you were using your real computer. Although palm os has similar programs, they're not as good as having the microsoft versions. The second is that you can turn a pocket pc into a wifi phone. So far I haven't seen the same software for palm os, although it might be out there somewhere (or at least on the horizon).

The nice thing about PPC vs Palm re WiFi is that it's integrated into the PPC so you don't have to take up an SD card slot. My Axim, for example, has integrated Wi-Fi and Bluetooth and a free SD slot and a free CF slot. This is good because you can use these slots for more memory or other gadgets.

And, re the free software... not that I'm advocating this or anything, but just as a general rule of thumb in this age of the mighty interweb, if you look hard enough, you can find ANYTHING for free.

you can get the $99 wifi cards for palms, but I kind of found this defeated the purpose of getting a palm in the first place, plus you lose your expansion slot in most cases if that's important to you. and they stopped making clies :(
