Damn, why do professors like to use PDF files? I know they are a little more secure in that you cannot edit them without a password, but then you cannot type any additional notes onto the file, you have to frikkin print them out and write out the additional notes (which sucks when you can't read your own handwriting).

Seriously though, what's the need for lecture slides to be secure files? What does it matter if people edit them, if the professor still has the master version, it shouldn't matter if people mess around with them.

They are smaller file size. there is no need to worry about pictures not printing correctly (mac to pc quicktime issue). They look nicer and are more flexible. I really hate it when the files are in powerpoint format

Maybe but they are usually formatted in 3 slides/page instead of 2 slides/page.

And there is no way to write in the notes right into the slides when the PDF is secured.

I'm sure your teachers would have no issue formatting it multiple ways for people.

I've never had cross platform issues and formats...the last time I did was probably in the late 90's.

Yeah, I write directly to ppt under notes and to the presentation itself for studying. Kind of annoying when I can't do that.

Yes there is. It is called Microsoft One Note. You can transfer the file into one note and then type all you want .

I would teach using PDF files to make sure no one steals my power point presentation. Students will use slides as their own on rotations and teachers will just rename the author next year if they teach the subject matter

I always just wrote my notes on the lines next to the slide, then drew circles and arrows if I really needed to highlight something...to each one's own, I guess.

Yeah but it takes like 10 second a slide to bootleg a ppt slide from a PDF (via screenshot and typing your own text), so anyone bent on stealing it will get 'er done.

It's just annoying so I wouldn't do this weekly for lectures.

If it hasnt been said already, there are programs where you can type notes on top of PDF files.

The one I use is called PDF XChange pdf viewer. Its meh, but it beats handwriting notes like some kind of amish pharmacy student.

There are other programs out there to view .pdf files where you can edit them or add notes, and they're free...

😀

That's the one I actually use.

Yeah - actually some of them do have an issue. We had a couple this year who refused to put anything into Powerpoint, citing copyright issues. What I couldn't figure out was - why do they have copyright issues and all the other professors don't?? In the end, everybody just did the things suggested above in the thread to get slides the way they wanted them.

I'm talking about multiple pdf formats. We frequently had teachers post the slides in pdf in 2,3,and 6 slides per page.

it's proprietary information. i convert everything to PDF when i give anyone anything (word, powerpoint, etc) - i worked hard for my stuff. you don't need to print the pdfs to write on them - just cough up some $ to get adobe professional where you can write and highlight among many other tasks on the PDF files. Or be married to someone who can get you all this stuff for free 👍

I'd suggest getting the student price from the adobe website if you go that route. I think I paid $150 instead of the $400 for everyone else. 2 licenses, so I have a copy on my computer and 1 on my wife's.

Ehh, I'll just get it from PirateBay.

Call me Amish, but I write notes in class. Some people type their notes in class, but not very many, because it's easier just to write on printed PowerPoint handouts than to edit text boxes and carry around a laptop. Plus, you can read the notes will trying to soak-up miscellaneous content last minute, i.e. studying while walking to the exam.

Yeah that's pretty Amish...haha. I type notes in the "notes" box underneath the ppt slide. I end up making random note cards though, usually 5-10, for an exam. I try not to study while walking to the exam, Philly/Jersey drivers are ******ed.

I type up my notes, but then I print the stuff out anyway and then write down what I typed up in class and place those in a binder. My computer is pretty unstable so it's good to have a backup in case the **** crashes and everything is gone or if I lose my thumb drives.

Actually, I got one of those little 10" asus EEE pcs, and its working out fantastic. The thing weighs less than any of our textbooks! The reason I got it is that I'm a very slow and VERY sloppy writer, so taking written notes in class for me is pretty inefficient. I seem to have started a trend though, as at least 20 people in our class now use laptops, the most I've ever seen. 😉

The only thing I'm missing is writing out the occasional equation or conceptual drawing. But then, asus is releasing a tablet PC in the same line, so that would be awesome...

That's right! Writing and draw on paper is way faster than typing. Give me a pen and 3 highlighters over any laptop.

I like your style, maybe it's an asian thing for us. Damn, if you don't have a bf, I don't have a gf, I would ask you out. 😀 Bwahahaha

Noooooo Silly. You're Asian, and so are a lot of posters on SDN. 🙂

I'm not Asian. I'm of Northeastern European or "Baltic" descent, i.e. not French, Spanish, Irish, Italian, etc.

Thanks for the compliment, though. 😉

I can relate to a lot of people, so maybe it was that comment about Asian culture...

I'd go dig around for a "this thread is useless without pics" image, but that would be too expected.

Funny now that I think about it...I take notes via typing, but when it comes to studying, I'll go bizarro on the note cards with multiple colored japanese pens that range in thickness between 0.3 and 0.7, and of course different highlighting colors. It's easier for me to type out in case a professor has a nice tid-bit to say, but I can zone out and post on SDN when the lecture goes off in a different direction. Laptop keeps me awake in class.

😕 How is it useless? You lost me on that one...

Yeah. Class can get super boring. The flipping of slides endlessly doesn't really help. 😛

haha, rule of "teh internets" #1, anytime a girl describes herself (or if a guy talks about a particularly attractive girl), that "thread is useless without pictures." Goes along the lines of "pictures, or it didn't happen."

Right. That's what I had thought. Just checkin'.

I'm not afraid of posting a quick picture and then editing it out. But, all of my new pics are on my phone, and I don't have the program installed to retrieve them. I don't even know where the program is. 😕

The sharks are circling, and probably drooling...look out! Girl posting picture!

Phone won't plug into your computer directly? I just usually used whatever generic image capture software was on the comp, that pulled it just fine. That, or I'd just email it to myself from my phone.

The heck are you doing up anyway?

The program is called PC Suite. It requires cables, too.

1) I'm an insomniac. 2) I'm IMing. 😀

3) Oh and I like to take naps during the day...

Yeah I managed to take a nap from 7pm until just past midnight...I think the sun is coming up, lovely.

Back on topic, I'm annoyed...our guest lecturer from Merck put slides on PDF while everything else is ppt. ONE lecture threw it all off, great.

PM me your s/n, i'm bored:meanie:

oooops, silly me. 😀 But still, you go girl!

I don't know, i just love taking notes with instruments that I can actually grasp in my hands. But on rare occasions, when I'm taking notes particularly fervently with highlighters that don't want to play nice, one would fly out and land on the stage. 😳 Hey, it's one to to make an impression. 😀

Heh, I generally write and record the professor if he/she allows it. Like xiphoid, I like to take notes with pen... but unlike xiphoid, I don't tend to throw my writing utensils around. 😛
