I'm going for radiology and also have a family. During residency I would like to keep my time away from family(out of town travel) to a minimum and am looking for programs that don't send you away for peds. I know I'll have to go away for the AFIP, but would like to not go anywhere for Peds. Does anyone know if it is more common to have to go away for peds? Or know which programs do not send you to another hospital? I know University of Utah, Albany Med, & U of Lousiville keep you in the area. Any other programs?

Thanks

Is this really that big of an issue? Admittedly, my knowledge of radiology residencies is confined to my own, the ones to which I interviewed, and the handful my medical school classmates are in, but I don't know of a single program that sends its residents "away" for peds. Across town to the children's hospital? Sure. My guess is that you're worried about something that isn't a problem.

There are some programs that send you away for Peds. Mayo used to (still does?) send residents to Arizona for High Risk OB and Peds (Which aren't strong at their home place). Honestly, they seem to be the exception (rather than the rule), however I interviewed at mostly "university" type places where there is a Children's Hospital intimately associated with it.

I know SUNY Upstate, Dartmouth, University of Vermont, & Maine Medical Center send you to Children's Hospital in Boston for anywhere from 2-3 months.

My advice would be to just look up programs on FREIDA, see what their web pages say, and/or call the program coordinators.

I only know about the places I interviewed. Integris Baptist in OKC sends their residents across town to OU for one month and down to a hospital in Dallas for one month as well, from what I recall.
