Has anyone heard from the NYU Langone Post match openings yet ? Or Case?

Yes to both - but no answers as to when the interviews will be.

Does anyone know why Brooklyn NYU Program has all their spots open ?

Kind of dead here ... I'll chime in

I think i have asked this for the past couple of years on these "Peds Match Thread". Why the vague anonymity with responses? Why even post at all? Its funny to see how each year this "match thread" grows smaller and smaller and more anonymous.

I went into this whole process a bit discouraged because my dental school stats suck. I took the ADAT as I viewed it as an opportunity to show programs that I can prepare for an exam and do well, even after being out of school for many years. I applied to a lot of schools just because I didn't know how my application would be viewed... Luckily plenty of programs were interested enough to invite me to interview. I am very happy to match to Iowa as I think it is a great fit for me.

Good luck to those applying in the future. It's not all about grades/class rank!

Does it really matter? The valuable information for match results is class rank, test scores, research, extracurriculars, etc. I don’t think it’s important to know where you went to school, or what program you are going to. I just wanted to compare stats and to see what students that had success were doing, so I could do the same.

By listing programs and schools it allows people to reach out to you for specifics on your program. As you become a resident, you will gain much more insight into the program you matched to. Some people may want to pick your brain on the certain aspects of your program. That in my mind is significantly more important than class rank, test scores etc. Maybe you dont want people to reach out to you, and thats perfectly fine. I just saw it as a way to give back to the SDN community.

I guess I see your point, but I disagree that the program you matched into is the most important aspect of these “match threads”. If anyone is interested in specific programs, all they have to do is post, and a plethora of people will be more than happy to answer. Including myself.

Just like the plethora of people that posted on this Match Thread. Anyway, congrats on matching. I still dont understand why there is such a decline in people even posting that they matched. There used to be a lot of people that posted that they matched. I guess its all secrets these days.

The information here is very useful to many and I don't want to discourage people from sharing in the future.

If there are questions regarding specific programs, feel free to throw them out there.

I have to agree with @Swoops -- if someone has questions about a specific program, a post or thread asking about them in particular is more useful than someone posting what program they will be at for residency. People tend to know not only about their own program, but programs they interviewed at and also programs that are geographically close to theirs. I've always seen these threads as a good way to gauge whether or not you're competitive in a largely opaque application process. Unlike going to dental school, where there are clearly defined GPA/DAT averages for each program, credentials that make one competitive for any given residency program are much more difficult to attain. Most people on this site feel free to speak their mind without reserve because of the relative anonymity -- offering up that you're at a particular program, often which have only a handful of seats, eliminates that luxury almost entirely.

I had numerous people contact me through PM's asking about the program i matched to (as well as the GPR i went to) after I posted my stats. Still a little confused how you gauge one's own competitiveness by looking at the information that is vaguely posted. If a future applicant looks at this thread, they would know that if they have a class rank of 19/85 they can possible match to some obscure east coast residency. Pretty helpful. I guess Im just bitter about the progression oh these boards to secrecy and anonymity.

Has anyone gotten a call/e-mail for post match through Langone from either Brooklyn or Rhode Island?

Just a notification saying my online survey was received. I did speak to the receptionist at Rhode Island and she said they would know more the first of the week 🙂

Meaning the beginning of next week? Thanks for the info! The waiting game is always stressful. Did they say the same for Brooklyn, do you know or who did you ask about RI?

Felt like this year hasn't been very useful to future applicants based on the lack of responses to this thread. Personally I did take the time to look at a few years worth of stats to get an idea of what was considered to be competitive for matching. Sharing details to give other students an idea. Good luck in future cycles!

Yes the first of next week! It’s killing me too

Do a lot of schools require or like to see that you have done research in dental school? Im just wondering what things programs look for. Thanks everyone!

I was wary and unsure of how applying would go for me, but I really feel like having a few years as a general dentist under my belt made me a much stronger candidate (just make sure you stress that you are teachable and want to learn!). I had experience working in public health and private practice, but mostly with adults not necessarily kids. I had some teaching experience, which more than one program said was unique (probably because many programs will have some component of this with dental students). In the past I have always cringed when I wrote/read my personal statements, but this time I wrote one I was really inspired and proud of. And my PEF's were actually meaningful and personal from colleagues/ mentors that could actually attest to me as a provider.
So if you are a GP who has been out a while and not sure how you will stack up, you will be fine! You will be a much more competitive applicant than you realize! Good luck 🙂

Anyone heard about post match interviews for Rhode Island or Brooklyn ?

My take away from this experience is to do your research. Some programs clearly like people with GPR/AEGD/Experience vs. fresh grads. LMC programs generally like older candidates. Definitely memorize your CV and PS, they read it! Nobody cared much about my research experience other than knowing that I did something. Programs want to know that you are teachable and can get along in a team. As long as you have a good personality you can match despite having only a couple interviews. Applying to peds, you should have some sort of outreach program as you can easily talk about that during your interviews and to show some sort of interest.

Strongly agree. I didn't have pediatric LORs and though I got many interviews, I didn't get many top quality Children's Hospital invites (rejected at Boston Children's, Pitt Children's, National Children's, Nicklaus). Compared to my friends who applied to the same programs as me and also got interviews there, that was the biggest difference between our apps.

I didn't get two either and I felt as though that hindered me from getting invites from childrens hosp programs like free99 said.

I was fortunate enough to have kept in touch with my undergrad peds director after graduation for a strong letter. I felt like letters from other specialities or general dentists doesn't really mean much even if they write good things. Luckily I matched to program with a children's hospital component.

I didn't have any pediatric letters of rec at all. I actually had three general dentists and the periodontist faculty (weird right) write my PEFs, but I knew they could really write strong letters on my behalf. And to be honest, even if I did have a pediatric faculty write me a letter, it wouldn't have been strong. I didn't have any interest in specializing in peds while I was in school, so there was little chance they would remember me. I had a few children's hospital interviews, so maybe some places don't care as much about actual peds letters? But I agree, and I am sure they are a good idea/preferred if you can get strong ones.

Also, just wanted to say this was my second time applying. If you didn’t make it this year, keep your heads up work harder and come back strong. You will make it!

For the applicants who had some years out in private practice, I'm curious what motivated you to go back to "school" and specialize in pediatrics?
For me, having practiced for 6 years treating patients from all age groups makes me realize I’m most happy when I’m working with children. And I’m the type to go all in when I’m passionate about something so it was a no- brainer to go back to “school”.

I thought I'd post since I've been using SDN for like a decade but have never given back. 🙂 Thank you SDN for years of advice.

I know the 'lutheran' programs get a lot of bad rep- but def do your research before b/c not all the lutheran programs are bad. (I'm sure there are a couple bad apples here and there). This was my second time applying and for sure, there is quite a difference between the several programs.
I did NOT get any LOR from pediatric dentists (and I think I agree with the others saying that it does hurt your chances)

For any future appliers reading this, unless you are financially well-off, do not APPLY to some of those well known expensive tuition programs. I heard that you automatically match to those even if you rank them very low. (aka backup) I am not sure if it's true but unless you are okay with being in a lot of DEBT, don't risk it. I personally think it's not worth the debt.

Anyways, congratulations to all those who matched!

I applied to a program that was tuition based and, though I loved it, I decided to place it lower on my rank list. I matched with one of my top choice programs that had a stipend. So this information that you match "automatically" with tuition based programs is very false.

The way match works is based off your rank list order AND how the programs ranked you. So you need to be high on the program's rank list as well, unless the candidates they ranked higher than you matched at a different program. Hope this helps!

One of the residents at a tuition based programs I interviewed said if you’re not weird and you rank us, you will most likely match. Just my own experience with this sorta thing.

My stats were less than ideal, and I didn't decide to apply to pedo until very late. My dental school grades improved greatly from first year to fourth year, and that was brought up at almost every interview. I received two pre-match offers to school based programs, but I declined and decided to take my chances with MATCH (I had a clear favorite, so I held out for #1....kinda stressful but it worked out). I know grades are important, but I think SDN emphasizes GPA/class rank a little much. Its kind of the only measurable that is comparable, so I get it, but there are other ways to show you're a good candidate. Write a good personal statement, have a good reason for doing it, and show that your extracurricular time is spent because you have a passion for something and not because you're trying to stuff a resume. Be knowledgeable about the field when you go to the interview, and most importantly, have fun with it. Its pedo for goodness sake.

Didn't apply to any lutherans... looking back, I wish I'd thrown in a couple to see what they were like (tried to do atleast one academic/hospital/stipend/non-stipend just to cover all program bases). Always happy to answer questions for future pedo applicants. Congrats to all! SDN has been such a great resource through this whole app process.

Can someone please post open spots for peds?

Congrats on everyone that matched! Just curious, when did everyone submit the peds application for PASS? Thank you

Congrats everyone! Peds hopeful here in need of some advice.
I got all of my LORs from peds faculty and pediatric dentists for this year's application cycle. I recently spoke with someone who asked me why I did not ask for one from my leading clinic instructor, to which I replied that I had heard that getting letters from peds faculty/dentists who know me well would be more beneficial for my application, as hospital-based programs like to see letters from peds faculty. I have a wonderful relationship with my clinic leaders, who have expressed that they would be happy to write me letters if need be.
Would anyone have some advice on this matter, or can share some of their experiences as the application cycle continues? Thanks!!

Hope this helps.
