Penn for sure if you want to specialize

I think I despise you. Dude, I have had rough decisions but an acceptance to UPenn would have made my decision easier. I would go there in a heartbeat. I have multiple friends who have gotten into very competitive specialty programs whose stats didn't blow me away. Their answer? The name alone opens doors. If you want to specialize or even are considering it-go UPenn. If you for sure want to do general practice, STILL GO UPENN! j/k. I think their clinical program is very good, but not worth the price if gp is what you want to do. I was also accepted to OSU but will probably end up at UCSF. Like someone said before-don't just go to A dental school. Let us know what you decide!

i don't get it? so if you want to go into GP, then UPENN isn't worth the cost?.... correct me if i'm wrong, but specialists by no means have a larger guarenteed net salary than a GP. my vote goes to OSU if you're from ohio... Cheaper = Better :) don't let anyone tell you otherwise..

No, I am just saying that if you want to be a gp you can do that anywhere, hence cost matters. if you want to specialize, GO WHERE YOUR ODDS ARE INCREASED! So cost isn't always the most important factor which makes cmoons decision harder. Oh wait, you wouldn't understand since Upenn rejected you. j/k I'm really not a jerk.

In a similar situation (Columbia instead of UPenn) I chose ohio state. In my thinking, when its all said and done, the cost difference is over $100,000 (Upenn will be a full %50 more) and in reality its much more than that due to interest on your loans. You can certainly specialize at Ohio State and you will certainly get a good education. Good luck in your decision.

wow! Congrats! That's like asking should I take the lump sum or the payments over the course of 10 years - you won, dude!

Cmoon, in all honesty, firstwavedown has a good grasp on your decision. you can specialize anywhere really. However, in talking to people, it comes down to where you feel the best. The money WILL work itself out and I have ample examples of that (I know a USC dentist who lives very well and says he makes more than enough money to live great and pay off his massive loans). Everyone I have talked to, including multiple people at Ohio State and UPenn, it comes down to where you want to spend the next four years. That means Columbus vs Phili and which students you want to be around. UPenn students might create an environment which will push you to be at your best. OSU students seemed more laid back and sports oriented. That has been my experience in taliking to students at each of the schools.

hey!! i am in the exact same situation.. im an in-state ohio student and got into both ohio state and upenn. the money factor is huge..however..the way i look at it is that you are going to accumulate a large amount of loans and we will be making more than enough to pay them off no matter where we go. BUT at the same time upenn is a lot of money to be putting over head for the next four yrs (with interest too)! im also just confused if i want to be in columbus or philli.....im used to a place like columbus and big city like philli (esp west phili) intimates me.... but i would like a change....such a difficult decision!!! ...any advice?? i also interviewed at michigan but havent heard back yet.....its a little bit cheaper than penn..would that change anything for anyone?

oo also one more question..from what you guys know...is penn hands down a better dental school than upenn? thanks!!!

I would definitely go to Penn if I were you. I interviewed at both schools and Penn just seems like they produce more competent dentists. Not only are your chances of being able to specialize much better, I think you are more prepared when you get out. At Ohio State, the requirements are minimal and I got the sense a lot of students were not fully prepared when they graduated, even for general practice. In my opinion, the extra $$$ is definitely worth the better education. Plus, Penn's name sells a lot better anyway.

one more question..from what you guys know...is penn hands down a better dental school than upenn? thanks!!!

Penn and UPenn are simply two different ways of saying the same thing. Both refer to The University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine ...

ooo wait guys i mean is penn hands down better than umich...haha not upenn!! what do you guys think?

As long as your comfortable spending the extra $100,000+ its perfectly fine to go to an ivy league or any private school for that matter...But to me, to rationalize it by saying you'll make enough money to pay it back anyway seems a bit odd. Its still $100,000 whether you can pay it back or not, its no small amount of money.

And to even imply that Ohio State doesn't produce competent dentists is ridiculous and not even worth arguing

If your going to spend extra money, do it for the right reasons...whether you really loved philly or you really loved UPenn itself, i would advise that you make sure you understand the amount of money you're spending and consider how else that money could be spent...if at the end of the day its worth it to you, go for it.

Thanks for your input. They're both great schools, but I've decided to go to Ohio State and am very satisfied with my decision.

Congrats!

is it neccessary to ask such absurd questions?...Penn or Ohio State?

... And that's really what's most important. Go where you feel most comfortable. Best of luck at Ohio State, cmoon.
