Hey Guys,
I want to get your opinion on UCSF vs Penn.
I have been fortunate enough to get deans scholarships to both of them so cost is about equal.
I know that I am genuinely interested in general dentistry but I may want to specialize and so I am trying to set myself up to be in the best position to do so if I later decide that specializing would make me happier than general.
Overall, I haven't been able to get in touch with many grads from the schools themselves and welcome any information, suggestions, or experiences you feel that would be useful towards making a decision.
Thanks!

since they cost the same for you, i would go with ucsf just bc it's pass/fail. takes a load of stress away (ie. apparently just pass your classes and you can specialize provided the rest of ur CV is up to par). but then again penn doesn't rank students past top 10 but i think they still give you a gpa. i would also pick based on location/where you want to live and practice.

cant go wrong either way, sorry dont have anything negative about either that would have affected your choice 👍

Hey Guys,
thanks a lot for your input.
I was thinking about where I want to practice afterwards and I know I would rather be somewhere warm like SF and I was wondering, does where you do your DMD/DDS have a big influence in terms of where you end up practicing (connections) or would it be where one does their residency?

Of course, you'll be networking with other dentists and people in the field. If you plan to practice in CA then you're better off with a Cali school, especially one that is well known out there, than one on the east coast. Plus you can take the Western Regional board at the same time you take the national board.

I was also debating between Penn and UCSF!!! but its not too late, i still have time to put in a deposit for ucsf hehe

What has pushed me more towards Penn is that my education there will be less likely affected by budget cuts (objective). However, living in San Fran would be so much better (subjective). Although there aren't rankings for dental schools, I think UCSF ranks higher in doing research.

UCSF was my number one choice before and while interviewing...partly because I thought I wouldn't get into Penn, but I did.

Although others make a good point about boards and networking, Penn carries a reputation nationwide. if you want to settle in cali forever then i think going to ucsf is best. however, you're young. who knows what opportunities lie ahead.

I'm giving up my acceptance at UCSF to go to Penn. Go to UCSF because I can't =( Go to UCSF!! wahhhh..feel free to PM me if you want to know more of my opnion
