Penn

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
last year my friend got her rejection letter at the end of april. It was the only correspondence she had from them aside from that supplemental postcard. I really hope some of us dont have to wait that long for any news!!

Since I think they choose interviewees every week, some of you will have to wait until the end to hear, even if it's bad news. It's just the nature of having interviews spread out like this. Sorry 🙁

Tiger1 you are awesome! It's so nice we can get some kind of idea of what's going on from SDN posts.

I am now tracking Penn interview emails obsessively per week...So far, no one on SDN has posted interview invites for Penn this week which I take it that no emails have been sent for the February 29th interview slots.

There is still the rest of today and tomorrow to wait for. According to the Penn section of the interview thread, emails are sent on Tuesdays and/or Wednesdays of each week. If some current student at Penn have more definite information concerning when emails for interview invites and how many more Fridays are open...please share.

Best of Luck to the rest of us still waiting 🙂

Thank God I'm not the only one doing that! I was even looking at the post times to try and figure out when they sent the e-mails! Can we say "obsessive"?

Honestly, I love Penn as a school, they're definately my top choice but their interview process is really kind of frustrating. Do any other schools drag out the process for four whole months? Not only is it nerve wracking, but it's also causing me quite a number of problems, i.e job offerings that I've had to turn down just because I still have no idea if I'm even getting an INTERVIEW!

My favorite part is that I'm making spring break plans -- which means I'll be gone (i.e. in HI) for TWO weekends, of the four in march. I've already decided that if I don't hear back from Penn before I hear yes (hopefully) from UW or UMN, I'm not even going to interview, and I'll withdraw.

I agree, I kinda feel like this whole drawn out process is terrible. And making me not like the school on top of outrageous costs.

I agree it is nice to know that i am not the only one going nuts about this process and becoming a very effective stalker.

I would say that the process at Penn is a negative but I am sitting on several schools that I haven't been rejected from but wasn't granted interviews from that are probably killing me more (because I sorta expected not to hear from Penn early on.).

So just a clarification on what we have deduced from stalking...we expect that people may soon be hearing about the February 29 interview day soon (possibly this week) and then there may be a lag until the 2-4 possible March invitations come out. So basically I need to learn to just hold my ponies and relax for a while!

Our official spring break is march 5-16 here at Penn. I don't *believe* they typically do interviews during spring break, but i could be wrong.

No, they don't. Interviews resume after spring break 👍

The admissions guy also muttered something to me about possibly not having interviews on Good Friday, which is the 21st. So what does that leave us with, the 28th?!?! Although Admissions man wasn't very sure.

Has anyone else heard this? It would just be nice to have an idea of when things are going to be happening (or not).

Well, I called the admissions office and asked if I could add experience to my file since I got a new job after applying (ShelterGirl is now ... ICUGirl? but I digress). Anyway, said to go ahead and email it to him - and - he didn't laugh. Slightly encouraging.

just adding on as one of the "obsessive penn stalkers"...i'm pretty sure i check this thread a couple of times a day to see if there is any updated information...in addition to checking my mailbox compulsively.

penn is my last one to hear anything back from, and it's KILLING me not knowing

Hear Hear! It's like our own little group... The Obsessive Penn Stalkers...

Hey, I have emailed them that same questions and they never got back to me. Was there a specific email address that they said to send it to? I'd love to update my file as well but no one ever got back to me.

Thanks

Let's chill out with the admissions bashing. I know each of you thinks you're the most important person in the applicant pool, but they have over 1000 applicants, and only a couple admissions people. Keep in mind that Penn didn't charge you a secondary application fee, so that's fewer resources for them to speed everything up. Also, I know for a fact there are admissions people looking at SDN, so be careful.

Woah there, cyrille, being a little crankypants today?

But I actually agree - I have just gone through the interview process and it was MUCH better than any other school I have dealt with (well, maybe not better than Cornell, but the two were both excellent). There is so much time to get any question you have answered and you get a much better feel for the school than you do at other places. There are students there to answer any questions you have, there are administrators and faculty members available as well as people from admissions. You get a tour, you get lunch, you get a ton of stuff. I can't say enough good things about it, so I honestly think it's worth the wait.

Also, if you have a question just call up and they'll take care of it. I think the "admissions guy" that someone mentioned before is Rob and he is great- knows me by face and name (I called a few times...). If they're not responding to your email just give them a call - it's been smooth sailing for me. And, unlike other schools, I think Penn is very up front with their admissions process and tells you exactly what is going on.

The last thing I have to say is, yeah, it sucks that it takes them so long, but other people were hearing from OSU since November (or even October) and I got called in January, so Penn isn't the only one who does it this way and, as I said, I think it's well worth it. Also, Penn let's you know what's happening within two weeks of your interview, unlike some other schools that just leave you hanging.

Just my two cents, take it as you like. I realize I've already gone through it and I'm not waiting anymore, but I had a great experience and I hope all of you do too!

Just to put my two cents in -- it's not that I have a problem with the interviews, the process, things like that. Silly girl that I am, I was just complaining about how LONG it's taken for me to hear anything. Had I been an early interview, I would have loved it. It's all relative. And since I'm applying to UMN and WI, I still won't find out until March anyway.

To be honest, I'm just jealous that some of you already know you're going somewhere -- I'd like to be in your shoes, maybe relax a little bit.

It sounds like the interviews themselves are wonderful from what everyone has said -- I just haven't had the pleasure of attending one yet 🙂

Didn't mean to offend anyone regarding their school. Sorry!

Hey OSJ, it was Rob (the guy Banditalfi mentioned) that I called about adding experience. I just called the phone number for admissions listed on Penn Vet's website. Good luck!

So, since our stalker friends have noticed that interview invites go out 2.5 weeks out in advance, and usually on tues/wed ... just wondering if anyone has one for 2/29 yet? If you do ... I bet you're out celebrating anyway, and not looking at this 🙂

Just thought I'd ask ...

no, I didnt hear anything today either.

Wi girl, you go to cornell? me too! Are you an ansci major? I didn't know other cornellians were on this site

Yes, I do indeed go to Cornell! I'm not an sci, but Chem and Bio double -- woo! And I just realized as much as everyone says Penn is so expensive, UMN, which is tied with UW for top choice, is officially 3k more expensive. I'm going to be in debt forever ...

Does Penn use some sort of formula when figuring out admissions?
EX:
Personal statement 20%
GRE 20%
GPA total 20%
GPA science 20%
Recommendations 20%

Is that really what the majority of schools look at? Don't they bother to take into account extracurricular activity like clubs/honor societies/orchestras/community service/Student Government? And what about awards/grants/honors? I'll be really sorry I wasted so much time on all of the above if it's not even factored in...
I'd always been told that that sort of thing looks good on your transcript, but now I'm starting to wonder. Should I really have just stayed in my room and worked on that 4.0? Somebody please tell me more of your application is looked at than just numbers...

Before you get too worked up about it, hopefully some anecdotal evidence will sway you 🙂 I interviewed at Penn in early January and a good chunk of my interview was spent discussing humanitarian work I've done. They were *really* interested in that part of me and why I had such a passion for the projects I am involved in (and how those would play out in a future career in vet med). And, when I got a phone call that night from one of my interviewers notifying me of my acceptance, she specifically brought up how those things helped show well-roundedness/ability to work with people/maturity and they really looked highly on that. So, while I don't know that it's something that made my application, they were certainly interested in it and it definitely didn't hurt!

It seems as though the field is trying to get more well-rounded people and not the kind of people-doctors we have now that are intelligent but their bedside manners are lacking. Go us well-rounded people!

Last year my interviewers wanted to talk about my years in undergrad playing Ultimate Frisbee (women's club team, number 4 in the nation for a while). So it definitely helps to have some unique things to talk about besides all those GPA/GRE numbers. 🙂

Ultimate Frisbee? Awesome! THat's definately something you don't hear everyday

I LOVE ultimate frisbee!! I wish my school had a team 🙁

Tuesday/Wednesday theory is shot. I received an email interview invite today for the Feb 29 date 🙂

Holy crap! That's awesome! Maybe there is hope after all.

I'm so pathetic...can I ask when your email was sent? I'm taking the penn stalking to a whole new level.

congrats! I would think there would be hope for us all, but sadly when someone gets an interview at penn and my inbox is empty I start getting very discouraged!🙁

I was reading the declining admissions thread before. not to be nosey, but didnt you choose Kansas?

Congrats again though! As much as Penn is so expensive, it's an amazing school!

Too bad they email -- otherwise I might be able to convince myself that "it was too late to the post office, it'll come tomorrow" .... 🙁

You aren't being nosy! You're right, I did say that I would choose an out-of-state school over my in-state, but I haven't made a final decision yet. And I've decided to mull it over some more. 🙂

LOL! Not pathetic -- just passionate 😉 My email came in just after 3:30pm Eastern time.

Withdrawing my app from Penn tomorrow! (In state)
from 2/4/08

No, just that I would absolutely choose KSU over Penn any day!

As for Penn, I know it's a huge draw for most people.. but having lived in the Philadelphia-area my entire life (and using Penn on occasion for my own pets) I'm just over it. Nothing against the school, I just hate the area and I'm ready for a change! Plus, it's cheaper for me to be OOS @ KSU than IS at Penn. Criminy.

Please don't take any offense. I don't know you at all.

I just want to say PLEASE, PLEASE, please DON'T interview here at Penn if you are just planning to just interview for the sake of interviewing and seeing if you can get accepted!! Give other people a chance that truly want to go here to have the opportunity to interview. I'm sure there are PLENTY of other people who would love to interview here and Penn is actually their top choice.

If you are genuinely interested in potentially attending Penn, then fine, no problems and just disregard what I just typed. It just seems from your previous post that you weren't considering Penn anymore. Why the change all of a sudden? If you would "absolutely choose KSU over Penn any day" and "hate the area," then why even interview here?

Like I said, please don't take offense. Maybe you didn't mean the above statements and just said them because of stress or worrying about not getting an interview invite. I know the interview process was extremely stressful!!!

I understand where you're coming from, but I assure you I am not just interviewing to "see if I can get in."

I was quick to judge and realized (obviously before I got the interview invite, since I had said I was going to withdraw my app on Tuesday) that I can't do an accurate cost/benefit analysis without seeing the school from a prospective student perspective.

Okay! Sorry, I just wanted to ask. I just knew some people from my undergrad that interviewed for those reasons and it just really bothered me. Please don't think that Penn people are mean! hehe.. Our first year class is awesome.

Good luck at your interview!! 🙂 I hope you like it here at Penn!

It's okay! I get that it totally looks like I'm saying "PENN FTL.. Penn interview? PENN FTW!" Haha. But I promise, I've been thinking about it, talking it over with people. Then when the invite came today, it was a total bonus since I had decided not to withdraw my app after all.

So, since you go to Penn, can I ask what your living arrangements are like?

What's that complex slang? ftl? ftw? whaaa?? i don't get it 😀
and btw, RockStarKDub, I think it makes all the sense in the world to go visit a place prior to making any decisions. I've spent a bunch of time at penn, and I think the people are all awesome, as is the school as a whole. It's more urban than I like, and I don't like the split campus, and it doesn't work for my girlfriend... but other than that... it's an absolutely superb school with a great rep for training amazing people in an incredible environment.

I understand where people come from when they say one shouldn't take an interview spot if she wouldn't consider the school (because she might be taking that interview spot from someone who really does want it). And if one really wouldn't consider going to a given school then I agree. But if one would consider a school even a tiny bit, I think she should absolutely go.

I understand it's nice to be considerate of others in this process. But we've all worked our tails off to get this far and we deserve the opportunity to consider these schools in as much detail as we want to before we rule anything out. Just as the schools deserve that same chance in evaluating us. And I know Remy phrased his/her query in a very considerate way, but I'm worried some people may feel bad about interviewing at schools they're not 100% over the moon about. No one should feel guilty about that. You never know what you're going to think about a place until you have all the facts. By all means, go collect those facts. You've earned the right.

I completely agree with VAGirl. We've worked too hard to turn down such offers. Hey, if I had gotten an interview at Penn (still keeping my fingers crossed...Penn is my 1st choice!) I'd be all over that! I think we're just so antsy and stressed. I had misunderstood RockStarKDub's comment before, I thought you had officially chosen Kansas. (I think it was Kansas?)

But good luck on your interview there! Keep your ears open for any word about interview dates in March for the rest of us still waiting!

Yes, I was accepted by Kansas on Monday and was inordinately excited about it! But I'm not making any decisions until I consider all of my possibilities. I'm just happy that no matter what happens at the rest of my interviews, I still get to be a vet! And I think initially my elation got the better of me, because the more I considered it, the more I thought "What if Penn is the perfect fit for me and I just dismiss it because I live nearby?" Not cool!

Thanks for the support guys. For a minute there I really went from being on cloud nine to being totally bummed!

I'm dying waiting to hear from Penn. My fiance just got a spectacular package from their electrial engineering PhD program and really, really wants to take it. We had planned to each apply to a bunch of schools and pick one that we both got into. The offer from Penn is so good he basically can't turn it down... but I still haven't heard from them!

There also seem to be interviews in the second half of March (yeah? after their spring break?), which is when my Spring Break is. I will be in Ireland with my rugby team. Do any of you happen to know if they'd be understanding of something like that and provide an alternate interview time?

Thanks! Time to go stalk the mailman yet again...

Some background so this makes sense...I am from CA but go to school in western PA. I was invited to interview at Penn on 1/11, but I didn't have to be back at school until 1/22. But, not wanting to screw up my chances (look like I wasn't serious about it or something), I flew out to Philly to interview, then back to CA, and then back to PA a week later for school (I decided I could just work a lot that week to make it worth it to spend an extra week in the sunshine 🙂). Anyway, when I was at my interview, I was talking to the dean of admissions and the whole situation came up and he laughed and told me how silly I was for not calling and explaining the situation. Basically, it seemed as though they would have been more than happy to push mine back so I could have interviewed when I was already in the state! All to say, that if you find yourself in a situation where you're supposed to be out of the country at the time of your scheduled interview, I would call and explain your situation. All of my interactions with the admissions department at Penn have been *really* positive and it seems like they'll go out of their way to help you out if they can!

So, since you go to Penn, can I ask what your living arrangements are like?

This wasn't directed at me but I'll answer it anyway (because I don't feel like going to the anatomy lab quite yet 😛)

Penn gets a bad rap for being in a really bad area, but I assure you that it's NOT that bad. Sure, if you walk too many blocks in the wrong direction, you'll be somewhere you don't want to be, but isn't that any city? The actual Penn campus is in a decent area, and a good portion of us live in the 10 blocks west of campus (as opposed to downtown, in the suburbs, etc). I live alone in a pretty big 1 bedroom apartment in an apartment complex that has indoor parking and a large courtyard in the back, with a big gravel run for dogs. A bunch of vet students live in this building, including some of my friends, which makes it nice and easy to hang out with people. It's about 9 blocks from the vet school (which is on the west edge of the entire Penn campus), and there is a shuttle run by the apartment complex that brings me to school every morning and back home every afternoon/night. There is also a bus that runs right behind my apartment building that takes me straight downtown to anywhere I would want to go on the weekend 😎 So as you can tell, I am pretty happy with my living arrangements, and while I wouldn't want to walk more than 2 blocks further west, I generally don't feel unsafe walking home, or in my apartment (especially since there is a 24/7 doorman and required entry codes for the front door and the elevator). There are also security guards that patrol the entire campus and off-campus area at night, and shuttles and escorts run by Penn that you can call if you think you might have a problem.

Lots of people live closer to campus in houses that they rent with roommates, which is also convenient and a little cheaper (~700/mo vs. 1000/mo). As long as you do some research before finding an apartment, I'm sure you'll find something that is safe, fits your needs, and fits into your budget. One thing I would not recommend is living out in the suburbs your first year - taking the train all the time is a pain, and there is very little (and very expensive) parking to be had right near the vet school. And if you turn into one of (many of) us who rolls out of bed right before leaving for class, that sucks even more because you have to get up that much earlier, and waste however many hours per week traveling. That's just my $.02 though, some people will tell you differently, although I think a lot of people have my point of view.

If anyone has any other questions about Penn living, academics, or whatever, feel free to PM me

Not to mention EXPENSIVE, expect to plunk down over a hundred bucks a month for a train ticket...especially since you'll be riding during peak hours!

I live around 43rd and Pine, which is about 5 blocks west of campus, and I think the area is great. Penn stations security guards at almost every intersection between 39th and 44th, and from Baltimore (on the south side) to.....at least Walnut, although I'm not sure what the northern boundary actually is (someone please correct me here!). They walk around and hang out on the corners from dusk until dawn 7 days a week, so there should always be one within shouting distance. 🙂 In addition to the shuttle Cyrille's apartment runs, Penn has a thing called PennTransit, which has shuttles that run along several routes until pretty late at night. I've never taken it, so I can't give you details, but you can read about it on Penn's transportation page.

I have a moderately sized 1BR in one of those 5-unit Victorian-style duplexes, which I share with my boyfriend. We pay $790 a month. Within easy walking distance (< 5 minutes) is a Vietnamese restaurant, pizza place, CVS, grocery store, a couple bars, a couple little cafes, a dry cleaner, a laundromat.......it's really convenient. I ended up renting from a guy who only owns one building in the area, BUT while I was looking for apartments I came across a place called ARCCO-Realty World, run by Alex Chamberlin, and they have a TON of buildings in the area, many of which are pet-friendly. I looked at several of their apartments and ended up liking mine a little better, but Alex was really nice, and very accommodating, and seems to like renting to vet students, so if anyone is looking for a place I recommend talking to him.

Oh, I almost forgot -- as has been mentioned already, the neighborhoods change pretty dramatically within short distances, so you could be in a great neighborhood on one block and then in a terrible one two blocks later. Penn compiles crime data and makes density maps available, which you can sort on a block-by-block basis, which is really nice. The URL is http://cml.upenn.edu/crimebase/

Good luck, everyone!

Currently, I live in a 1 bedroom apartment near 42nd and walnut in a converted house (4 other bedrooms in it? or something like that). I just moved here mid-January! I live alone now, but my significant other will be joining me starting in summer. Then maybe he can pay some of the expenses. I pay $650 per month, with heat and all utilities included except electricity. Electricity is usually $20-30 per month, but I don't know how much it will increase when I run the AC in the summer. I have comcast cable and internet (~$72 per month..), no on-demand or extra channels included. The apartment is in an old house and while its far from being the Taj Mahal, it is comfortable and decently large compared to the other 1 bedroom apartments I have seen. There is a small, separate kitchen with nice-sized living room, bathroom, and bedroom. Washer and dryer (coin operated --$1.25 washer and $1.00 dryer) are right outside my apartment door in the hallway. I have 2 cats, fish, and hermit crabs living with me right now.

Before I was in a studio at 41st and Baltimore paying $585 a month and also paying electric heat ($$$ in winter). My studio was basically the size of my living room with the fridge/stove/sink in the side of the wall. Basically a rip-off, but whatever, I only stayed there 5 months. It was nice to be so close to the school initially, even though I'm still pretty close now. I had to lug the laundry across the street to use the washer/dryer as there werent any in that apartment building.

I've always felt safe walking home... I'm not sure what the northern boundary for the Penn security guards. They are definately still on Walnut, but I don't know if they go up to Chestnut or not.

The Fresh Grocer is on 40th and walnut, but it is expensive!! There is a cheaper grocery store on 43rd and walnut called Supreme.

Ok, I can't think of anything else. If there is anything else anyone wants to know, just ask!

Did anyone else who put research on their postcard get an email advertisement from the VMD/PhD program? I did ~1 month ago but haven't heard anything about an interview yet.
