Penn

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Does anyone know how to find Penn's curriculum or have access to it of some sort? I know most schools post it on their website but I can't seem to find it!

I asked one of the interns where I worked and she said if she had her code she could get it for me but she doesn't - so is it only available to students? As i'm sure most of you can appreciate I am a dork and like to review that stuff before interviews!😛

Thanks!

They will give this to you at your interview.

Why is a degree received at Penn called a VMD?

they said at the interview its because Penn's program was originally based on their med school programs, hence VMD (Veterinary Medical Doctor). No other schools followed suit so its the only VMD program.

I think you're looking for something like that in the way of curriculum. I don't think anyone will be willing to give you their PennKey as that would give you access to their grades, financial aid, etc. But they should give you a supplementary bulletin with course descriptions, etc. when you interview and/or matriculate.

PAThbrd - that is exactly what I was looking for, thank you. Acutually texlaevis PM'd me and then emailed me the pdf of the bulletin - which was really helpful and had that information in it!

But thank you for helping as well!

I got the call from penn today around 8:30. Im in!

Yay congrats!!!!!!

Calpard, any news????

Sorry I didn't get on here in time to wish everyone luck, I hope it went well today!!!!

It seems like Penn has many fewer electives than some other schools (Cornell and Davis, for example. Do Penn folks feel like they get broad exposure to less traditional fields (public health, wildlife med, etc.)?

For anyone who is interested...

I got an email about 3:30 today saying I was offered alternate status. I replied saying I would be very interested in staying on. I also asked them more information on how that works.

So if any of you who haven't made final decisions but are wavering about Penn, I would be happy help convince you to go to whatever other school it may be 😛😉 (Ok shameless plug over with - moving on now!)

CalpardNY--I will be deferring my spot at Penn in the next few days. Hope that opens up a seat for you in this year's class!!

Congrats CalpardNY. Good luck with getting in. Are you accepted anywhere else?

Hopefully Pupsforseeing's deferment helps you out, update us when you know for sure!

Thanks guys!

Cows: Yes i was accepted to Ross (but declined) and was in the process of deciding between Illinois and Glasgow when i heard about the penn interview. Penn is my top choice so i guess the waiting game continues. But i will make a decision between Illinois and Glasgow for now (i was having a hard time doing so before!). I was hoping to be able to decline both and open up spot sooner for other people - but i guess that is the vicious cycle of vet school admissions! 🙄

Pupsforseeing/Biggreenvet: Thanks guys for letting me know! I can understand how hard the decision to defer is but hopefully I will then be able to see you both next year!

I emailed Ms. Herpen and she said they don't rank until after the alternate deadline of April 11 and that they can give me my rank probably sometime in late april - so i expect it to be a bit of time before i know!

I just received my alternate status today, but I am IS, don't know if that really matters at this point. I figure the IS list will move a heck of a lot slower. Roseanne Herpen told me the same thing, and hopefully I will know ranking by the end of April. Keeping my fingers crossed for all those still waiting! Like Calpard said, I would be glad to convince you to give up your seat.😛 Waitlisted st Penn and Mich, guess I will prepare my stuff to reapply!

Congrats on your alternate status as well! I can tell you that when i interviewed on friday Dean Keiter told us that we were all OOS (that they didnt invite any IS for the final interview day because they had offered all the positions to IS). I dont know how that affects the waitlist, but hopefully some of those IS with outstanding acceptances need some discouragement for penn!

I will keep my fingers crossed for both of us!:luck:

I received an email today notifying me of my position of "alternate". I guess the waiting game continues! I am IS. How many alternates do they have?!?

I asked that question but I didn't receive a specific answer. Also I am assuming (since at my interview on friday they said they had sent out all their IS offers) that their are two separate lists! Hopefully we will find out more after the April 11th deadline!

wait, is penn's deadline april 11 or april 14???

Their deadline to let them know about their offer for alternate is April 11th.

I also was offered an alternate position. IS. I replied this morning declining the alternate position. Hope it helps some of you that are still waiting. Good Luck:luck:

has anyone heard anything about Penn's alternate list? can we call to find out where we are on the list? any other Penn alternates out there?!? let the waiting game continue!

Rosanne Herpen told me that they were ranking after the deadline and it would be available to us at the end of April. i was going to probably call the end of this week or beginning of next. Keep us updated if you call and hear first.

thanks! i'll just wait a little bit longer before i bother them! (what's another week or two after waiting this long!)

has anyone heard of an acceptance from the Penn alternate list? Just wondering if it has started. Thanks.

E-mailed Roseanne Herpen today, and found out I am officially #7 on the IS list. Not looking good as she told me that the IS doesn't move much, and that she has seen years where no one was accepted off the list. I am keeping my fingers crossed, and hoping that this is one Lucky Number Seven! :luck::luck::luck::luck:

OOH good to know! I was putting off asking until friday because my mom convinced me monday was "not late april!"...but if they are giving out IS rankings i assume they are giving out OOS - ill call tomorrrow!. I'll keep you all updated...

Hanakanapuna - i will also hope 7 is lucky for you :luck:! I don't know if it helps but I think you were waitlisted at Glasgow? I forgot to post it (ill go do it now), but I declined admission there yesterday - if i didnt get confused and it was you I hope that helps (if Penn doesn't come through of course)!

Thanks for the well wishes. I was waitlisted for both Glasgow and MSU. Right now I am very much on the fence if Scotland calls, but I guess you have to go where you get in! Best of luck to you as well :luck: and hopefully our wait for a position is a short one.😀

So I just called Roseanne Herpen myself to find out about my rank...officially #8 (out of 18 if anyone was curious...i was so i asked!) She said the class is solidly booked so right now they aren't delving into the alternate list. She said historically they have seen years where they don't touch the waitlist and years where they have delved into it! OY! She told me to call back in a few weeks/a month and check back.

Im kinda in that limbo mode still...1 or 2 rank i would say - hmmm maybe i have a shot...and if i was like 14 or 15 i would move on as i have another great offer...but since penn is my top choice 8 is like right freaking in annoying-land! At least i guess i can stop obsessing with wonder right now.

hanakanapuna maybe we can just pray cornell keeps going through their oos rejection lists and some of those penn people switch over 😉! 7 is one of my lucky numbers so im with you on the :luck::luck:! And about Glasgow - i totally understand your fence but i still hope you get it and have to cross that bridge anyway!

7 + 8 = 15... unfortunately, 15 is my number on the list!!! just found out today 🙁 ...
best of luck to the rest of you!:luck:

I emailed Ms. Herpen and found out I am #3 on the IS list. She gave me the same info about the IS not moving some years and moving in others. So she wouldn't give me an actual evaluation of my chances, which I guess is just about as honest as she could be. So more waiting I guess, and trying to not get my hopes to high haha.

Hey everyone~

I am going to be a first year at Penn this fall and I recently signed a lease on a 3 bedroom apartment at Spruce and 42nd (about 5 minute walk to the vet school). There are two of us who will be living there so far but we need a third person!!! It's a year lease, starting June 1. A little about the apartment... it is two levels, with one level being the three bedrooms and a half bath. The other level has a big living area/kitchen and a full bath. There is a laundry room directly attached to the apartment. It has hardwood floors, central air and is pet friendly. I will be bringing my cat and so will the other girl who will be living there. If you have a cat, that would be fine too. A dog may be okay, depending on how big it is and if it is cat friendly. We would prefer a female roommate. Your part of the rent would be $518.33/month + gas/electric/cable & internet. It's a great price and in a great area. If you would like to know more about myself or the other roommate or just the apartment in general, please feel free to PM me or email me ([email protected]). Thanks!!! 🙂

~Michelle

has anyone heard anything about the UPenn waitlist?!?
just curious! Thanks!

If anyone is looking for housing near Penn, my friend is looking for a roommate. She lives at 42nd and Pine. PM me if you're interested.

Hey everyone,
I just realized I never updated this after my post-mortem in May. Basically I was right in my speculations about why I didn't get in. I was told that my GPA and GRE are both good, but that the schools I went to were lower-tier, and that my history major left me deficient in the upper-level sciences department. If i had either gone to a better school with my major, or if I had completed a bio major at my schools, I would have been in better shape. The evaluator I met with was extremely helpful and even offered to look over my application before I submitted it this cycle. She did look it over, and she made some very helpful suggestions. To correct my application I was told to take Biochemistry and Microbiology at a higher tier school, so I took Orgo 2 over the summer at Drexel and am now taking Biochem and Microbio there. I was also told to talk a lot more about the veterinary profession in my essay and less about my past. Sorry I didn't post this in time to help this years applicants, but hopefully this info helps future applicants. Good luck to everyone beginning the UPenn wait with me this cycle!!

I was just curious and wondering if it's not tooooo personal, those who got accepted to u penn. What were your stats? And if they let you enroll without a undergrad degree and with just the prereq's?????

GPA, GRE, etc?

Cause it would help me alot! Much thanks in advance!

I'm a 2nd year now, but these were my stats when I applied:
GRE 1190, GPA 3.80 (1st GRE score was 1010 😱 before I retook it)
I applied during my senior year of undergrad, so I had my degree before starting.

there's a student in our class that applied his junior year, and after finishing his first year of vet school, got his BS. he was a student at Penn undergrad, so maybe it's limited to those students, but he didn't have a degree when he matriculated.

there's another girl that got all her work done in three years, and is thus a year ahead of everyone else, but i think she actually got her degree in those three years.

have you called rosanne herpen yet? she's wonderfully helpful, and will better be able to direct you in that sense than either remyripper or i will.

I saw on the "Interview" thread that a few invites were sent out today. Those of you who were invited... mind sharing which program you said you were most interested in? 🙄

And is it really two dates sent out already? 1/16 and 1/19?

Thanks!!

No, my date is actually Friday, January 16 - total mistake/type on my part. Sorry for any confusion!

Also, I listed my main interest as "public health", if that helps.

I listed small animal as my primary interest, public health secondary.

I'm a VMD PhD student. Stats: GRE 630 Verbal 760 Math, 3.75 GPA.

I think they will let you enroll without an undergrad degree, but they want a good reason why you don't have

I put down research and other (wildlife medicine) as my interest - which is pretty different from what nymfn712 and ZooNose wrote. I know in the past they have done interviews based on interest ... do you think they are changing it this year?
