Penn

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I saw on the "Interview" thread that a few invites were sent out today. Those of you who were invited... mind sharing which program you said you were most interested in? 🙄

And is it really two dates sent out already? 1/16 and 1/19?

Thanks!!

Also, at the beginning of this thread, the posts say that Penn notified people the day before by phone call -- is that true even for OOS?

I heard from somebody that Penn waits until after Cornell sends their acceptances out to send interview invitations to those who get into Cornell, asking if they are still interested in Penn. Does anybody know if this is true? And if not, when OOS interview invitations are going to be sent out? I know Penn doesn't require interviews.

I would guess that it's not true. How would they even know who Cornell accepts or doesn't accept? And it just doesn't make sense anyway.

I am IS and didn't get an invitation yet, though I know they started inviting a few people. I'd say we just have to wait and see.

Exactly, how HARD is it to get into U Penn?

I noticed that at UPenn their program is a VMD....is there a difference with the DVM program?

How hard is it to get in? I guess that depends on the competition, how many applicants there are this cycle for Penn, their stats, and how your stats compares to theirs. Same as any other school really.

VMD stands for Veterinariae Medicinae Doctoris. Penn just likes to put it in the Latin form like they do for human medicine (MD =Medicinae Doctor, per Wikipedia). It still translates as Doctor of Veterinary Medicine and it is the same degree.

Good luck! :luck:

This cycle's first round of interview invitations have already gone out, and it appears that they were sent around the same time they were sent last year. My question is therefore, does anyone know/remember when subsequent interview invitation were sent out last year? Do they keep getting sent out in waves, or is it a continuous stream from now until March? Just curious, so I can plan my freaking out accordingly.

Thanks

I was told last year that they sent out interview invites in cycles. I didn't get an interview invite last year, but I didn't hear a rejection until March from them. So hopefully the next round of interview invites will come out soon 🙂

Waiting till March might make me cry...

edit: Waiting till March will definitely make me cry...

while you're absolutely right that it is the same as a DVM, it's not that Penn "just likes" to put it in latin like the doctors, it's that Penn is the only school of veterinary medicine in the country that sprung from the school of medicine rather than the agricultural school. quite a difference, a point of pride, and hence, worthy of a unique acronym.

and pretty much what he said about the 'how hard is it to get in' question. 🙂

Thanks Emio...I must have taken a snooze during that part of orientation 🙂 I just didn't want anyone to think it was somehow not equivalent to a DVM.

And actually its "what she said"

Hey, when you guys said the first round of interviews were sent out, are you referring to the ones that were sent out a while ago (last month)? Does anybody have any new insight as to when more interviews will be sent out?
Also, are they sent via snail mail, email, or phone call?
Thanks!

I wish I had an insight...my last post was referring to the interview invitations sent out last month. Hopefully someone can chime in and suggest when the next wave might arrive. Im pretty sure the invitations are done via email. Sorry, I wish I could help more.

I have no clue about how Penn works out their overall interview schedule from January-March, but I received an invitation by email last Thursday (1/8) for an interview on 1/30.

I interviewed on the last day of interviews at Penn last year. I was notified by email on March 6 for a March 28 interview.

Last year all of the invites were sent out in waves. The interviews seemed to be about every two weeks (except for some extra space in early/mid-March due to holiday/break), and the invites were sent out 2-3 weeks before the interview date.

Hopefully that helps 🙂

I'm an OOS resident and I got an invite on 1/8 to interview on 1/23. Good luck everybody!

I'm an in-state resident, and just got an email today for a 2/6 interview!!

Still on cloud 9........ 😍😀

Last year I wasn't invited, and I did wait until March for a rejection email. Some people got the rejections sooner than others, I think it's all a continuous process. Good luck to everyone still waiting!!

...bumping this one up. Anyone here if more emails were sent this week, IS or OOS? Congrats to all who got the interview though! Second time applicant here (IS) and flat out rejected last year, so I'm hoping they'll recognize the improvements on my app this time around - mainly, more lab animal experience and improved GRE/GPA scores!

Did anyone not receive the "Your Application is Complete" email back in November and had to contact U Penn directly to verify that everything was complete?

I just got an interview invite to their "Equine Day"! I am so excited!!!! :woot:

Got no such email. Instead, I got a postcard in the mail saying that my GRE scores were not sent in (I inadvertantly only sent my scores the first time I took the GRE and assumed the second time would be automatic...guess not). I didn't sne dmy scores until like the 24th of November and the final deadline was December 1, but by some miracle they got them I guess!!!! Anyways, I was way too terrified to contact them because I was afraid they'd say "sorry your application missed the deadline" and I knew I would forever guilt myself!

Congrats tpad!

Does anyone know when they send out rejection letters? They said that they'd tell those of us "less academically competitive" as soon as possible.

Hey! Just found this thread.

Is anyone else going to be part of Penn Class 2013??

I had my interview 1/16, and got a phone call that night telling me I was in!

Depressing $$ question:

Does anyone know what the total estimated cost of living + IS tuition is for Penn for a year? I've been having trouble finding it. Also, I heard that PA decreased the amount of state funding this year and that Penn awards some aid based on class rank after first year? Does anyone know if this is true?

Thinking about paying for vet school is incredibly depressing. Not that I've even had my interview at Penn yet, but I'm wondering if being IS there will cost as much as OOS somewhere else, like Tufts.

I also had my interview on 1/16 and got an acceptance call that night! I'm pretty sure I met you that day - my name's Kim, and I was the one who said compulsively checking this website was not good for my health!

equine day??

Is that the day they interview applicants interested in equine medicine? I didn't know they broke it down into specific dates like that...

Still haven't heard anything from them yet🙁 It is sort of puzzling me because I thought since I actually got an invite from Tufts I'd get one from Penn and two other pre-vet students in my year here have both been invited by Penn and I am pretty sure my credentials are as good if not better than theirs...(I'm not bitter, I am extremely happy for them- I just don't get how they select people I guess.)

Apparently there are two interview dates in February that take place at the New Bolton Center in Kennett Square. Not every single person interested in equine or food animal is interviewed on those two dates, however as there were at least 2 people on the first day that were interested in equine. I think it was mention thought that those people had already visited the New Bolton center for one reason or another, so they were just interviewed at the Philadelphia campus. Also, interview invites are sent out every few weeks through the first week or so of March, and, I was told that the order in which you are invited for an interview does not necessarily reflect their preference for you, so don't give up, you still have quite a while to hear!!

The IS tuition is about $30,000. The cost of living is probably close to any other school if you can find that information. I'm from PA, so yes it's pretty depressing that we don't have a "cheap" choice school - our IS is just about as expensive as any OOS tuition. 👎 If I don't get accepted this year I'll probably move to another state (that has a vet school I'm interested in) so that I have that option when the time comes. Of course the good news is that Penn is an excellent school and we have a better chance since we're IS. 🙂

Bcrunner-- I do know one person who has gotten a flat-out rejection from Penn... And she got hers a while ago. If you haven't heard anything yet don't count yourself out 😀

And... I found an invite to "Equine Day" interviews in my SPAM FOLDER this morning!!!! I am so excited!!!! I'm kinda freaking out!!!! I'm actually really glad I checked email BEFORE logging onto sdn, or I would've been way more stressed 🙄 See y'all there!!!

Oh, and, what kind of shoes are you guys going to wear?!? My regular interview shoes are probably a little too nice to walk around the NBC... I'm actually considering just bringing my winter paddock boots and changing into them for that part of the tour.

I was wondering that too. I think I might wear winter boots and just change for my interview. It won't look pretty(they're clunky rubber boots), but I guess it's better than slipping/falling down in manure/snow and having to interview that way!!! 🙂

Yeah, I really have no idea what to wear. Do you think we're going to be trekking around outside or just around barn aisles? If we're just going to be inside, I'll probably wear ballet flats...but if we're outside, I don't want to be slipping around in mud in them!

I'm not sure. They said the same thing for the other interviews I went to (wear comfortable shoes) and I wore my heels (they're not stilettos or anything) and I was perfectly fine, even in slight mud/snow. When we were outside we were on sidewalks.

I highly doubt we'll be trudging through paddocks or anything. If I had to guess I'd say it'll be mostly barn aisles and sidewalks. Maybe I'll wear my heels and bring my boots just in case. Guess it depends on the weather that day too!

Are you OOS? I can give you a good idea of the weather when the time comes if you'd like, I'm close to UPenn.

I gotta say I couldn't disagree more that the cost of living is close to that of other schools. Philadelphia is expensive as heck. Having talked to current students last year, I found it would cost twice as much to rent an apartment similar to the one I found in FL. College town cost of living is waaaaay less than big city cost of living. And it factors in big in your financial aid package.

If you researched it then I guess I stand corrected! I live in a suburb of Philly now, and I agree that it is expensive. My 2 bedroom apartment costs more than a rental house would where I grew up (rural central PA). I know that some vet schools are in a rural area (Iowa comes to mind) but I also assumed that half were in more expensive areas (such as CA). Philly is not an incredibly expensive city, so I figured cost of living would be somewhere in the higher middle.

Expensive is all relative, though. Coming from NYC someone would think that apartments in Philly are dirt-cheap, whereas someone coming from a rural area would faint at the expense. I was the latter, but now I live in a fancy suburb with many multi-million dollar homes, so compared to that center-city isn't too bad.

Apparently all the other schools are in cheaper places, though? Didn't realize that.

If you are interviewing at New Bolton. They give you a tour of the horse barns, pig barns and a dairy so you will be outside walking around. I would suggest appropriate footware for the weather. I

Sorry entered too quickly🙂 That being said I did wear a pair of flats 2 years ago and while my feet froze I was ok.

Hmmm...so maybe I will bring two pairs of shoes. Certainly wouldn't hurt anything--flats don't take up much room

Thanks for the info, cows! And EqSci, I'd love an update about the weather when it gets closer.

I'm REALLY hoping for good weather from Feb 12-23--I have 4 interviews all over the country! 😱

Thanks cows!! No problem Ben & Me, I'll post something here the day before. That's a lot of interviews... I'll hope right along with you! I've been lucky so far on my two and I don't have far to go for UPenn. Hope you get lucky too!!

...either this year or last year

I'd love some examples of questions they ask, it seems like a partially but not entirely behaviorally based interview? I've checked out the Interview Feedback SDN section but it doesn't have a huge amt. for UPenn

Anyone else wanna share?!😎

Also, are any OOS'ers renting a car and driving themselves to the NBC?

I was considering it but will probably just motorcoach it instead, I'm feeling like driving around Philly in February might be more excitment than I want to deal with on interview day, and my hotel is super close to the Hill Pavilion anyway.

There are lots of cost of living calculators online. just do a search for whichever city your interested in and cost of living and you will find something giving you an idea.

Yep, we moved to Center City from NYC in June, and we were really stoked about how much cheaper it is to live here. It's all relative. 🙂

I found housing in Philly to be about on par with apartments around my small undergrad college town.

I pay about $500/month for my one bedroom apartment, heat, gas, water, electric, and cable (I split it with my SO - so $1k total). I know of many other people paying about the same when splitting 2 bedrooms or living in larger houses with other students. Obviously if you want to live alone in a one BR it's more expensive.

So it's not dirt cheap like some places, but you can certainly make it affordable.

Hey, I interviewed at Penn this year (and was accepted!) so I'll try to remember what they asked about. Basically one person has read your file and one hasn't, so to start you describe yourself to the person who hasn't read it yet. Then they both ask you questions, mostly along the lines of "why do you want to be a vet?" and "how do you stand out from the other applicants and why should we pick you instead of them?" Those were the only two big things that they asked me that were non-specific to stuff on my application. They asked about a couple of very basic ethical questions (not stuff that you would have to research). If you have any more specific questions I'd be happy to answer them... that's all I can think of right now.

Hey Bunnity,
are you IS or OOS? When was your interview? Thanks in advance.

Just noticed the interview is on Friday the 13th....spooky! Hopefully will bring good lukc, not bad!

Also, what is everyones interpretation of this line:
"Since we will be spending most of the day at our large animal facility, please wear dress-casual clothing and comfortable, appropriate foot-wear!"

What is dress-casual? I feel like dress and casual attire are generally opposites so what in the world does the hyphenation mean? lol! So confusing!

Beanjamime, I was in-state and last week.
tpad40, I wasn't at one of the New Bolton days, but there is an entry in the "interview feedback" thing that talked about it a little and seemed to say that suits weren't necessary.

General question for everyone... and I know there's a separate thread for this... but is everyone wearing a suit? I have a few that don't really fit perfectly and aren't that nice, but then I have a really nice pair of vera wang trousers and a nice black blouse I could wear... no blazer, no suit. Is that underdressed? It would be with pumps. Gah... I just posted pics on myspace and my best friend said my outfit was better than the suits, but idk... I don't want to be the only one not wearing one...

ETA: I'm interviewing at the Philly campus/VHUP... not New Bolton.
