Hey guys!

I'm a 2nd year student thinking more and more about perio. I have pretty average grade/on the lower side of average for many courses actually but i'm also on one of my university varsity team so time is short.

Anyway i'm planning to do some summer research for a few months this summer both for boosting my future application given my medium-ish grades but also for my own pleasure + $. I got 2 options of research; one in public health or another one in perio. the first one is way wayyyy more interesting tho and in a city i would much rather spend my summer.

Would it actually be stupid to choose PH when i have the chance to do a project in perio given my future plans? could that actually make any difference in a future perio application?

it may sounds stupid but i still know very little about the process of residency in the US (i'm a canadian planning to study in the US after my dmd) so i rather ask 🙂

ps. while i'm at it.. what kind of grade would i need to match into a perio program? maybe not the best ones but like.. a decent one haha? do clinical grades count for more than preclinics?

IMHO, do whatever research project you feel most passionate about - the fact that you are doing research at all is a bonus. Lots of perio residents do research that look a lot like PH research as well.

Hi, it is always good to hear about someone having a genuine interest in perio, welcome to the club! If you plan to apply for perio programs in the future, I would definitely recommend getting involved in relevant projects! Grades are always important (+class rank) and I would definitely recommend trying to get brilliant grades in relevant perio courses. It is never late to improve your overall GPA.
Hope this helps
