Just putting out some feelers here! Just submitted my application for perio residency. I've been out of dental school for a few years and have been practicing as a GP. I have taken a lot of CEs on surgery and soft tissue management, and really fell in love with periodontics after graduation. I have a lot clinical experience, a robust CV/ resume, and some good letters of eval. Not sure if any of these things matter too much when residency programs are looking for candidates, but I thought I would try my hand at applying. I elected to not take the ADAT and I was around the middle of my class at UT Health San Antonio when I was in school. I'm only applying to the three perio programs in Texas. Wanted to see what I should expect out of this cycle? I appreciate the feedback!

i’m not perio, but i would guess you’ve got a very very low chance. 3 programs is nothing…anything in texas is more competitive…and you were middle of your class.

This is going to really hurt your chances. I imagine your competition is applying to 20+, since many programs are probably planning on virtual interviews. Virtual interviews make it a lot cheaper to apply to a ton of programs. I’d rethink your strategy if you’re really serious about specializing.

Not perio but have had some friends go through the UT-Houston program. My understanding through them was that interest and involvement was the difference maker. Rank is important but I think my friends were ranked in the middle and matched to perio still. I would reach out to some of these programs in Texas and see if you can do an externship!

**Also, saw that you're UT San Antonio 2017. I was UT-Houston 2017, probably some mutual friends there!

I would apply to more schools if you could.

Thanks for the feedback, I'm just not willing to relocate out of Texas! I understand that this'll prob hurt my chances but not willing to make that sacrifice 😵. I do love being a GP as well so I figured it was a win-win to apply 🙂

I am a current perio resident in a program outside of Texas( didn't apply to Texas). Like others have mentioned I strongly encourage applying to more than 3 programs and cast a wider net outside of Texas too. I was a GP in private practice before returning to school. Competition has differently increased thanks to COVID. Either way, I wish you best of luck. If you get an interview/interviews make sure positive qualities shine through 🙂

I interviewed at some TX perio programs. They seem to be heavy research schools and really love research.

I think if you have a research background it would be tremendously advantageous to your application. ADAT would be helpful if you were middling in rank. LORs are from periodontists?
