So I'm writing my personal statement right now, but the topic is more geared towards: I want to get into medical school to become a psychiatrist and why. Is this a good idea or should I be focused more on medicine in general?

You need to ask this question in the pre-med forum:

But to give you a brief answer, no, you need to focus on medicine in general. By focusing just on psychiatry in your PS, you're excluding 90% of medicine before even getting accepted to med school. That isn't the best approach.
