Hey all, I’ve been looking at ways to use my hobbies to develop ways to supplement my income long term. Just like a lot of you, I love lifting, try my best to stay in shape, and would like to actually pursue personal training. I don’t see this as something I’d do as a part-time gig but more as something I’d find time to do on my own and maybe schedule appts. during the random hour I’d get off. Honestly, doing this would be a hobby and ultimately would love to start my own business and manage diet plans, create custom programs, etc. on the side perhaps during PGY-3/fellowship and beyond once I get accustomed to residency. Does anyone have any experience on doing this?

I have the following questions:

1.) Would you go with the NASM v. ACSM certification? Both are recognized by the NCCA. ACSM seems more legit in the fitness forums and is cheaper.

2.) Obviously, this would be a hobby and I know any hour worked doing this would be dwarfed in comparison to work at home, but I’d imagine being able to maintain this hobby and motivating myself staying active would be enough even if that’s all I ever got out of it. That said, do you think it’s a good idea? Hourly rates that people seem to charge would be $30-50/hr and I’d imagine I’d charge closer to $30 as I’m newly starting.

3.) Perception. While I do not plan to be a major player in medical academia, I don’t want to be a sell-out or have anything to do with the quackery that’s out there right now in the fitness industry. That said, what are the ethics behind using such a service to promote your practice and vice versa? Please don’t hold back while voicing your thoughts about this in particular. I’d rather hear what potential haters think down the road now and see if doing this could hurt my professional image in any way.

Thanks ya’ll!
