Hey,
After all this “To Catch a Predator” mockery I started to actually look into the program that catches all these guys. It seems like there are actually a lot of small roles/volunteer positions and their forums are just like SDN. (In fact they might be better cause you can give people respect points), anyways, from a pre-med stand point what do you guys think if someone was to get really involved in this. Is pretending to be an underage child and getting a potential rapist/pedophile arrested something that ADCOMS would like to see or is that a big red flag. Assuming its done with this organization legally with law enforcement.

Check out the website to see for yourself.

Any ADCOM members out there who have had applicants list this yet?

Anyone currently involved in the site and listed it on their AMCAS?

I doubt this will ever become the next big thing, and it might be kind of a polarizing activity - some will think it's great, some will think you're a vigilante.

The polarizing issue is what I was most concerned about. It would really depend on how you "spin" it.

From an adcom standpoint, I can hear them asking "why did this person choose to get involved in this activity?" "why does it float their boat?"

More than a few non-psychiatrists might try to figure out why you would want to do this.

I've never seen anyone involved in such an activity. Rape crisis counselors, yes. Suicide hotline, yes. Predator-catcher, no.

Just my opinion, but I would stay clear of any of the following words on my ps: perverted, pedophile, predator, molestation, or rapist.
Also a cool link:

Type in your zip code and see all the sex offenders living around you!

Thanks Lizzy, very good point.

On a side note perhaps a comprehensive psychiatric evaluation of some of the members of that website could make a great "scholarly project" for some med student wanting to land a top psyc-residency. Im sure they could have a field day.

I dunno, I think it's kinda cool, and I don't see why anyone would question your motivation - what's wrong with catching predators? I think it would be a fulfilling experience, but that's just me.

i always thought that they were cops (but who look really young/are dressed to look young), or highschool kids interested in criminal justice..idk.

At least for the Dateline show, they usually say at the beginning that they hired "an actor"...usually they're 18/19.

So, is how exactly is the ability to pass as a 13 year-old a good thing on one's med school application? 😀

there are law enforcement officials who do pose as underage girls online and simply wait to be solicited, much like they'll take a female cop and put her in booty shorts and stand her on the corner, but there are also internet vigilantes.

Cool website, thanks for the post Tic.

I think I grasp why you think this would be interesting. However, I think you are muddling two very important concepts. First, if you have a genuine interest in subverting child sex offenders, then that is one thing. But, if you are looking for some "community service"-type work, engaging in sexually explicit conversations with men (or women), while posing to be a child seems like a bit much. Maybe I'm just weird tho?

On the same token, if you are just merely interested in performing justice as an civilian, why not join something like the Minutemen? They do the same thing, except their targets are people who are attempting to illegally cross the US borders.
