I was just looking for an answer to this question online and I figured you guys might have some good answers.

Why do celebrities support PETA?

I thought it was because they are dumb and don't know any better or actually have radical PETA-style politics. But it seems like a lot of them should know better. I mean.. William Shatner?? He is too good for PETA!

im shocked u posted this!! it was just yesterday that i brought this up with some friends because i saw an ad supporting PETA with celebrities in it. God it makes me sooo mad!! i mean, dont they research the organizations before they support them?? IMO (i havent read stuff but its just what i think) celebs always donate money/support good causes because it gives them good publicity and also some truly believe in helping others. When it comes to PETA, i think celebs think "oh i dont want others thinkin im an animal hater" and one of the most famous animal orgs is PETA because they cause so much trouble so their voice is heard before other animal welfare groups. I dont think they have any clue how extreme PETA is and that majority of veterinarians dont support them. I mean, i see every day people in the public who dont even understand how PETA is run and they think it is a good group just helping animals.

Yeppers. Pink got up and encouraged people to boycott australian wool (in an already poor wool-market) because of mulesing, and then later admitted she hadn't really researched what mulesing was at all. It makes me want to punch her in the face. grrrrrrr 😡😡😡

They do it for the image. Most people don't know what PETA is really about and just see it for the name. They're like "ethical treatment of animals? Hell yah!" so they like it. Celebrities know this and enjoy the publicity, so they support it. Neither party understands what PETA has done nor wants to do.

At least Sarah McLachlan picked ASPCA. It is an improvement on PETA. But those commercials with the sad shelter animals are emotionally loaded guilt machines

oh my god, those ASPCA commercials kill me. I actually cried when I saw the first one, although they work. My friends mom finally allowed them to get a dog after she saw that commercial.

There should be a warning before those Sarah McLachlan ASPCA tearjerkers come on!

Hahaha, when I hear the song "In the Arms of the Angel" come on the TV I have to change the channel otherwise I'll be a sappy soppy mess by the end of the commercial. Damn you Sarah McLaughlin for your heartwrenching puppy-eyed commercials!

 I'm the exact same way! They make me cry every time without fail.

I've wondered the same thing for a long time. A friend of mine did a research project on PETA, did you know that PETA euthanize about 70% of the animals that they "rescue," even if they are healthy and well socialized? And I heard about one incident where a bunch of PETA members burned down an exotic animal pet store with all the animals inside because the animals were "better off dead than in captivity." And they are completely against wildlife management, even when it's to save endangered species. Is it really better for animals to go extinct than for us to interfere and save the species? I honestly just think supporters are ignorant and get sucked in to the "ethical treatment of animals" part, rather than looking at what the organization actually does. I'm all for the ethical treatment of animals, but PETA is not about that.

Myotis, they euth more like 95% of animals in their shelters.

PETA has a hell of a lot of money and political power. I only assume that they pressure/recruit people in high places for support. Now I'm sure those people don't know any better and join out of ignorance. Because what do the masses love? Babies and cute animals. Clearly supporting animals will make me look better to the masses.

As for me, I prefer the Penn & Teller outlook. Those of you that haven't seen the episode on PETA, google it!

Makes me crazy! It’s never going to stop until the veterinary community starts speaking up.

On a related note – I was so offended by the anti-Ross ads that were posted on SDN that I almost cancelled my membership. Instead, I emailed SDN and they blocked peta.org from posting advertising on this forum. Apparently SDN has no idea what Google advertisers pop up, but they can block the bad ones once they are made aware it.
So if you see them creeping back onto this forum, it’s worth an email to the administrators…. Thanks SDN!

I was doing great on holding in the tears until it got to that scene with the orange cat looking at you with a caption that says "will I die today?" then I just lost it. And there's very few things that make me cry.

As for the celebrity thing, just like other people have said I think most don't realize how extreme PETA takes things. I think their actions stem from good intentions but their methods are in many cases horrible and much too extreme. Also I think people can support certain things PETA stands for without necessarily agreeing with everything they stand for. For example the "I'd rather go naked than wear fur" ads. Fur for fashion is ridiculous and selfish imo (note I'm not talking about -50 F places where there's a necessity issue) and I can support that message that's being sent out. That doesn't necessarily mean that I agree with everything else they do but I do agree with that one issue.

I don't see ads anymore, so I completely missed this. Google ads are always random - they just sift the content of the site and post something 'relevant' based on key words that are repeated. I'm sure this section of the forum contains the words "Ross" and "PETA" a lot, so there you go.

ETA: I agree that anti-fur is pretty easy to agree with, for most people I'd imagine. Leather, though... well, it's a by-product of eating meat, right? They aren't killing a mink and then tossing the rest of it in the trash - the leather is there, so it might as well be used. Am I wrong about where it comes from?

As for commercials, well... the Pedigree commercials that David Duchovny does the narration for really got to me too. Anyone remember those? Do they still play them?

Yes, the pedigree ads get me every time. I watch them, and I hear "we're for dogs" and im like... *sob*... "I'm for dogs too!!!" Lol.

They did a pal pedigree adoption drive over here, with ads for the dogs in the supermarket catalouges. The "face" of the campaign was this gorgeous australian shepherd mix, and his caption was like "my name is x, and I was the loser of a divorce battle. I went from my nice grassy backyard, to this cage. I wonder why no-one wants to play with me, why no-one wants to take me home. The concrete feels strange under my paws..."
I can't tell you what the rest said, because at that point I started crying in the supermarket. But I can tell you that he was adopted speedily 🙂

 I started crying just reading it!

It's weird, I work with shelter dogs all day but those commercials still get me. I know they are emotionally loaded but they are true - and unfortunately they are not exaggerated or overdone - the reality is sad and shocking enough.

This one kills me: http://manuelsweb.com/home.htm

We used skinned minks in our anatomy lab for muscles and blood vessels. So not EVERY mink is going to waste...

I wouldn't personally buy fur for myself, but it has more to do with me not wanting to waste money on something so frivolous. I don't have a major problem in farm-raised animals for fur, but I would never approve of something like hunting seals or zebras or whatever for fur.

We considered this for my vert morph lab, but everything was so tiny and the specimens were not very well cared for so things would be ripped or stretched... so we went back to 'stray' cats from wherever. Mine was neutered and FAT, another was spayed and declawed... who knows.

1. I hate those freaking ASPCA ads. They make me not want to watch Animal Planet ever.

2. The pedigree ones are also very sad but I feel like they are less guilt-inducing than the ASPCA ones. And they don't show cats or kittens. Seeing the cats and how they are just thrown away breaks my heart.

3. I don't want to think that people don't care who they give their money to. I guess when you have a ton of money and want to give it to someone, "People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals" sounds pretty good. It just makes me sad.

I also think that a lot of people donate blindly to PeTA to make themselves feel good and not because they care about the welfare of animals. People are sheep.
It's funny when you see some celebrity advertising for PeTA and then, come to find out, they have animals of their own. They must not have looked at PeTA's ideology very closely...if they did they'd find out that having a four-legged roommate is a "no no" in PeTA's eyes.

Haha that SNL clip is hilarious!

OMG THAT IS SOOOOOOOOOO SAD. i wish i never read that 🙁

It really made me sad to see Alyssa Milano on the PETA list. She's one of my favorite actresses! Of course, she was already sort of on my S-list because her "MLB apparel" doesn't have any Orioles stuff. I know we're not a very good team, but darn it, we're still in the league!

Also, pretty much any commercial with animals makes me cry, but the ASPCA ones destroy me. Seriously.

But, you know the commercial for the cell phone where the guy sees the missing dog poster, and takes a picture of it that he sends to all of his friends, and at the end one of his friends finds the dog and the guy brings the little girl her dog? Oh yeah, that one made me weep, too. But I cry at a lot of things, so I guess it's not a big surprise! 🙄

That one almost made me cry the first time i saw it. Not that that happens in real life often enough but it was adorable.

As for Shatner, if he went naked I'd sooner donate to a fund forcing him to put his clothes back on.

I thought the phone commercial with the lost dog was really creepy. I can just see the dad come running out the door: "You stay away from my daughter!"

^LOL and I was sitting there like, "Well this is why you should get your dog microchipped and really you shouldn't walk up to dogs with unknown vax histories and parents shouldn't hold kids responsible for the care of their animals..."

yeah I'm a jerk.
