I was just curious what kind of pets most pre vets have if they have any or any they think they may want to add later on.

haha I thought of this because i used to raise ducks in the past and I think i want a pet duck again. Thought about doing what i never did before which is to get a incubator and hatch call ducks from eggs! Has anyone ever hatched bird eggs before from a incubator?🙂

Currently I have a blue crown conure of 8 years old who is a sweetie that always wants attention! In my house we own a Shiba Inu and he is kind of wild compared to a lab dog. But he is still friendly and tries to talk to you when he wants to go outside by putting both paws on ur lap doing this certain bark think while looking at you. And one old cat of over 10 years and a very very bad orange cat that wants to pee everywhere in the house. Hes a male of 1 years old.

Later on i want to get a siberian husky and the rest shelter rescued. Oh and a pair of swans when i get a house one day!😀

Currently I only have a betta living with me, although I do have a pug that my mom is looking after for now, and two basenjis that are basically my dad's dogs.

I would like a Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever, a Gordon Setter and a shelter rescue dog, as well as a couple of horses and a hedgehog. I'd also like to have some chickens and maybe alpacas 🙂

This is a fun thread!

I currently have a miniature Schnauzer who I love tons, but I have always been a fan of bigger dogs that you can really play with and play rough. I would love to one day own a few Rottweilers and German Shepherds.

6 cats😳, 1 mix breed dog and a bearded dragon. I'm hoping to add another dog to the family in a couple of years so my current dog has a playmate.

Wooo your gonna be a busy mama one day!

I've hatched chicks in an incubator before. It takes 21 days for chicks to hatch and 28 for a duckling (muscovies take 32). If you can, get a silkie hen and let her start setting. Replace her eggs with the duck eggs and let her raise them. Silkies are the BEST hens to brood almost any type of fowl. I love 'em!😛

I have 3 cats, 6 dogs (Blue Heeler, Mutt, Pug, English Bulldog, Shih Tzu, and Jack Russell), 4 miniature Zebu cattle, 1 angus, 2 ostriches, pigeons, bantam and standard chickens, goats, an African Grey parrot,5 reef aquariums with fishes and invertebrates, freshwater angelfish, and a Reeve's turtle. Growing up, I had more, but I down sized before I went to college because I didn't want my mom to have take care of all those animals!

I have two kitty cats.
They're so cute
They give each other baths 😀

I'm hoping to get a dog one day because I never had them. But I do have a soft spot for cats. I don't think I will ever be without cats (except for when I'm in vet school lol)

Well right now I have
3 horses
1 mastiff
1 chinchilla

The house that I am staying at has 4 horses plus one of mine.
3 Mastiffs
22 cats

What I want when I get older..

MORE horses🙂
A great pynernese (sp?)
more mastiffs🙂

🙂

I never thought about that before to use a silkie hen. That is a really good idea. Some birds are just better mothers then others. Like Pekins..they aren't the smartest and call ducks not so good. I only had luck with east indies and Swedish domestic ducks (best moms ever).

And lol that is a lot of animals!! I am still wondering if I need to find a home for my parrot if I moved or just live at a apartment that allows animals..Most likely paulie will be coming with me.

I had 19 ducks at one time and that was hard! Even when I have my own house one day when everything is said and done I don't know if I want to have so many pets even though Ithought about maybe a horse. Between going to a practice or whatever then having a family and then all those animals to come home to and take care of! But hey, most of us understand animals perhaps?😀

Right now I have one dog-he is my baby-looks like a golden retriever in the body of a corgi.

Eventually I would like to have a Great Dane (I love Great Danes!!) and a Corgi.

And after working on farms I would love to have a horse or two (Arabian if I could afford it! They are so beautiful and elegant-or maybe a Friesian!). And I would like some Dairy Cows too! I really like Brown Swiss and possibly a Guernsey because of their temperment. And a rat! I have heard they make great pets too 🙂

Four cats, three dogs (three-legged golden retriever, shepherd mix, German shepherd my dad picked up off the side of the road), two goats (more coming in three weeks!) and twenty-odd free range chickens.
I think the chicken flock is getting inbred with a disproportionally concentrated "setting" gene. There are typically have 2-3 hens determined to hatch eggs, even in the middle of winter when they're not setting on anything 🙄.
In the future, I want horses (possibly retired racehorses), lots of lovely goats, two or three shelter dogs, and as many cats as decide to make their home in the barn that I'll have someday.

Yeah I had a lot of ducks one time as well. What the dogs didn't kill, the cars did!🙁 I actually found three of them (mallards) frozen in barbwire one morning, the dogs had chased them at night and they got hung. I got hit by a truck the same day and broke my femur! 😱

Yeah, I'm going to have to find a place that will let me have my bird. She isn't that loud, like a macaw or cockatoo. I think you should try and keep yours as well. As you know, they get bonded to certain people and sometimes never recover from being passed along.

chyactnate what kind of mastiffs? I really want a neapolitan and found one in Florida, but I don't think my current living situation would allow me to have one, until I move for vet school.

Future pets: Just about anything! I really enjoy any animal's company, except a hissing cockroach. I just don't get it!😕 I definitely want ruminants of all species!

i have 2 maltese and a german shepherd mix and hope they'll live forever. 🙂 they're perfectly trained to how i want them (they're not perfect...just perfect for me).

just read an article about the oldest dog to live. 29 years old! i'm hoping that my dogs get to be like that.

future pets: i want miniature cattle and miniature horses. and chickens (for eggs). 🙂

This year I am living at home so I'm back with all my pets. I have 4 dogs (a golden/lab mix, husky/pit mix and 2 chihuahuas). One of the chihuahuas is only 2.5 pounds at 3 years old. I have 5 cats, 3 are older and 2 I rescued last year.

I also have a few reptiles including a bearded dragon, uromastyx and red footed tortoise. I worked at a reptile zoo and became fascinated with all of them. My mom works at the animal hospital with me and brought home a guinea pig and a lion head rabbit. We have quite a little zoo at home. lol

When I go to vet school I'll be bringing my 2 younger cats, Frankie and Roxy, and my uromastyx. The rest are perfectly happy at home with my mom.

Current pets: At home= maine coon mix cat and an australian cattle dog/american eskimo mix dog. With me at school= two betta fish (1 male, one female), and a syrian hamster.

Future pets: Anole lizards, rats, pit bulls, a cow or two (preferably Brown Swiss female), chickens (Rhode Island or some type of Bantam), and a horse or two (would like a rescued Andalusian (fat chance at finding one in a rescue!), other than that any rescue horse is fine...must be a gelding though!!) I am interested in other animals as well, but that's what it on my mind currently. lol Most I can't get until I'm well established in my career. XD

Current pets: a German Shepherd/Golden Retriever mix and a Labrador.

Pets in the future: German Shepherd and a horse or two.
Oh and maybe some type of livestock (other than horses). Always found goats to be interesting.

One dwarf bunny is my only permanent pet. I foster bunnies from the shelter (same place I adopted my bunny) on occasion. Right now I have my friend's pigeon for an undetermined amount of time :/

I've had just about every small pet imaginable (well, not quite). Fish, gerbils, hamster, lizard, parakeets, mice, cockatiels, rabbit, etc. I've discovered through all of these that I am more of a cat/dog person. I tend to just get annoyed with cleaning cages. Ironically, cleaning litter boxes and yards don't get to me.

I got a cat when I was 7, and had her until she passed away in July. I really miss having a cat, so I'm adopting a new one......Friday. He's a 3 year-old Ragamuffin. I'm very excited.

Anyway, for the next few days I'm down to just my dog, Sasha, a 9 year-old mutt. My roommate has a puppy (also a mutt), a cat, and a betta, all of which I'm taking care of while she's studying abroad for the semester. It's a full house.

It's funny, because the two pets that I really want in the future have already been named here! I really want a Great Dane and a Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever. It's funny, I had an argument with my boss this past summer about the latter breed. He didn't believe it existed, and when I showed him a picture online he said that half the chow mixes at the shelter should be re-labelled Duck Tolling Retrievers. Ugh. As much as I say I want these breeds, though, I can see myself never getting a purebred dog, really. At least not on purpose. I volunteer with a couple of pet rescues, and have been known to go to the humane society as an afternoon activity, so when I'm in the market for a pet, that's the place I'd likely get one. I am most happy when I have a dog and a cat, so I think that will be how I spend most of my days. I don't really have a specific breed of cat that I like. Despite what might be deduced from my most recent acquisition, I like generic alley cats just as much as I do the purebred ones. I would be very surprised if I EVER bought a cat.

One Corgi here (icon) and two all-black kitties. In the future, I want a little bit of everything. Lol. I think I'd like to adopt more black cats in the future since they seem the hardest to adopt out... and I think they're awesome. 🙂

3-legged Eastern grey squirrel
2 flying squirrels
4 cats
2 dogs
1 bunny

future= minature donkey

Living w/me at my apartment right now I only have one guinea pig. At my mother's house is my incorrigible 14 year old beagle who is the love of my life! I HATED leaving him behind when I moved out but I work full-time and he is used to always having someone at around since my mother works from home. Also living there is a sweet little black and white kitty who's around 3 I think...they adopted her after I moved out so shes not mine, but she is such a love!

Future: CHINCHILLAS!! and most other rodents. I'd love to have another beagle someday too, as well as a pit bull, rottweiler, some type of mastiff, cat(s), the list goes on....a full house but I like it that way. As much as I love my guinea pig, it can get quite boring without the dog and the cat parading around demanding attention😛

Oooh, I'll play...

Current:

2 tabby cats, 1 betta fish, and 1 moose sized GSD

Near future: a smaller version (for a while) of aforementioned moose (aka GSD puppy)

Far future: I will have my own little Old Macdonald's farm. I want a little bit of everything as I would like to be mostly self-sustaining and raise and grow my own food. I also plan to get back into raising working ranch horses and want to start raising working German Shepherds.

Fun Thread!

We have 3 basset hounds (Thelonious, Django and Penelope), one cat(Lasya) who we are trying to adopt out (she does not like basset hounds) and I have a worm composting bin full of red worms THEY COUNT! (poor little worms never get any love just 'cause they eat garbage...hey the bassets eat garbage whenever they can and they count)

I hope to add some chickens in the spring. We live in town but I'm trying to do a little "urban-homesteading." The city allows up to, I think, 5-6 hens with the right enclosure/situation. (very cool)

Currently:
<----Maltipoo, 6 years old
Also, a 5 year old miniature dachshund (piebald!)

Future pets:
Bird--definitely!! (green cheeked conure if I go small, blue and gold macaw if I go big)
Guinea Pig?? (preferably red and white to match my dachshund)

I used to want chickens (mmmm, fresh eggs!), but I'm not sure I want to live far enough out in the country to have them.

I also used to want a turtle, but I think I need my pets to be more interactive than reptiles are.

Currently:
-2 DSH
-1 Siberian Husky

Future:
-I have no idea; I only know I'll have animals for the rest of my life!! 😀

I currently do not have any pets (live with the rents in a complex that has a no pet policy)

BUT. . . .

I had an old english sheepdog my rents gave away when i went away to college. so I am planning on rescuing an adult/senior OES when i start vet school.

I am also planning on either rescuing or serving as a foster for pits (I am one of the board members of a pit rescue group down here in miami as they are illegal in miami dade county)

I currently have 4 amazing kitties; 3 tuxedos and 1 tortoiseshell, and one rat (her cagemate recently passed 🙁). And yes, rats make fantastic pets.

In the future I want to live on quite a bit of land and have dogs, goats, a miniature donkey or two, miniature cattle, ducks, alpacas, and I would LOVE a couple of Gypsy Vanner horses, though they're quite pricey from what I've seen.

1 cat
1 barking cat
1 bird

We currently have three dogs (GSD/lab, GSD/Siberian husky, and GSD/??) and two cats.

As for the future: I want to have a large acreage, so I'm sure I'll have a small zoo! Definite future pets are GSDs or GSD mixes, cats, and a few horses (either rescues or mustangs).

Current - Old man Yorkie, Old lady Pomeranian, Older lady DSH, Young boy DSH, old man bunny, and my niece's betta which is probably mine now since it has been living with me for the past 8 months.

Future - Everything if I can afford it. 😀

Right now I've got two dogs, two cats and a fish tank full of mainly rainbowfish (see av), tetras and cories. If/when I go to vet school, I do hope to bring my dogs with my for sure and possibly my old gentleman cat. The other kitty is more of my parents' cat. They adopted him to "replace" me when i went away to school. And then i transferred to a school nearby and returned home, so much for that 😛

In the future... I am a "dog show" person, and i have a whole slew of breeds that I'd like to own. Basset hound, pomeranian, bull terrier, standard poodle and weimaraner are on my "someday" list. Well not at the same time, and not necessarily to participate in conformation. I'd also like to foster with rescue when i have the resources some day. Y'know, when i have a nice fenced acre or two for everyone to run around in. Don't really have any plans outside of dogs but I'm sure other critters will wind up in my household too.

LadyHitokiri, I have good news for you! There is actually a bantam sized RIR. The best of both worlds and a nice breed of chicken. Of course, it would take a lot of their eggs to make an omelet!

We have four dogs; 2 Labs, a Golden Retriever, and smaller spaniel/border/??? mix, two beardies, two ball pythons and a Hogg Island/Colombian cross red tail boa...in the future I think we'll get some goats to complete our petting zoo.
We'll always have dogs, most likely horses, and if I ever end up owning my own practice, there will most likely be an impressive reptile exhibit in the lobby!

We currently have 3 cats, and are currently looking to adopt a dog.

In my dreams, I'll have horses someday and maybe a bunny or two. Definitely will always have cats and (hopefully) a dog around.

Currently have:

-male Belgian Malinois (we do disc, agility, hiking, Dog Scouts, you name it)
-female Belgian Malinois (certified therapy dog)
-male Belgian Maliniois/German shepherd cross (used to do a lot more, but he's being rehomed due to his expensive inability to get along with the other male)
-male Siberian husky/Rottweiler mix
-female Rottweiler (certified therapy dog) on semi permanent loan from my parents
-2 male rats (1 black Berkshire, 1 black eyed white rex with dark grey spots on his face), more when I get an appropriate female to breed
-1 old male silver sable ferret
-2 snakes (an anerythristic boa constrictor imperator and a jungle carpet python)
Want:
-horses! Would LOVE a pair of Friesans 😍, but that'd put me back a serious chunk of change...my friend had me ride her Tennessee Walking horses this last weekend and those weren't half bad either. 🙂 Maybe one of those or a draft cross for "the husband horse"
-cattle: a small beef herd (maybe Herefords or another relatively mellow and sturdy beef breed for pasture raising)
-chickens: Buff Orpingtons to start with. Lovely dual purpose birds I hear
-goats: I love love love the Alpine dairy goats that look like gazelles. Very pretty
-dogs: I want a pit bull/Staffie, Dutch shepherd, Irish wolfhound/Scottish deerhound, Great Dane, Alaskan Malamute, you name it...never a dull dog day goes by at my house!

I always wondered how you get a dog certified for therapy. How do you do that? Can you use a dog that is trained by a company though?

Usually, but not always, you find a group or club that does scheduled visits. That's probably the easiest. To get a dog to be certified, it depends mostly on the hospital/nursing home facility. Some places actually don't care if your dog is certified or not, but more and more do due to liability. Most clubs require at least the AKC's Canine Good Citizen and many also require the Therapy Dog International (TDI) as well.

It takes a certain temperament to make a good therapy dog too, not just having a nice pet. They must be friendly and outgoing, but not pushy or shy, environmentally stable on slick floors and around wheel chairs and hospital beds and strange noises and smells. Obviously they need a very high bite threshold as just this weekend, I was visiting with Lily my Malinois to a nursing home and one woman had both hands around the base of her neck right up in her face insisting that she needed to give kisses. 😱 Most dogs would want to bite if a total stranger did that and she was definitely not comfortable, but I had to take the lady's hands off my dog's neck. It's very rewarding talking with the older folks, but not every dog (or handler) is good at it. 🙂 Here's some links:

Thanks. 😀Yeah, I always wanted to look into it and try it out someday. One of my jobs is at a place that is connected to a nursing home, but i work in the independent living for old people unit although sometimes they bring animals like dogs into both units. I just never got a chance to go down and talk to the people running it while it went on.

I don't think my shiba Inu is a good fit because sometimes people scare him and he is food aggressive (will break your skin if you put your hand near his food while eating). You know what I mean by that I am sure.. Otherwise he is quite friendly and curious for the most part about new people or situations. So I guess I would just use a dog provided that is certified already most likley.

I currently have zero pets as we live in a rental with a no pet policy (and were naturally between pets anyway when we moved here) but I have plenty of pet dreams for the future!

My passion is sighthounds. Particularly greyhounds and whippets. I'd love to adopt retired racers. In fact I've been wanting to do that since I was 15 and I'm now almost 30 and still have never lived anywhere where I could have a dog (or 4 )🙁.

I like cats too, particularly longhaired ones like ragdolls, but they don't always mix with sighthounds so I will have to see about them once I get the dogs.

I also daydream about one day having a few acres and having a small petting zoo, but my health may prevent that, plus my husband is SUCH a city boy I'm not sure I could ever get him to do that with me. But I am still dreaming.

I agree with a previous poster about not enjoying cleaning cages. I found that to be true when I owned various animals over the years such as hedgehogs and snakes and chameleons. I loved the animals but in the end, I was just as happy to not deal with cages. I prefer an animal that can roam about the house and/or yard.

Current pets:
3 cats (one calico and 2 brown tabby)
1 Saint Bernard
1 English Mastiff

Possible future pets:
Irish Wolfhound
Bernese Mountain Dog
Great Dane
A random assortment of cats
Macaw

Current - 4 cats (2 at home, 2 at school), and the occasional litter of foster kittens

Future -

I'd love to adopt retired racers.

I'd love a retired greyhound, especially since the local rescue is good at assessing their cat-compatibility. I also want a rat or two.

Really?! Ooh...me like. 😛 Well, I'm not too worried about egg size. Thanks for the info!

I have 3 dogs and 2 cats (hint look at my name lol)
all the dogs and cats have been adopted from my local humane society
9 year old who knows mix
6 year old spitz mix
3 year old pointer
10 year old tortie DSH Heartworm positive 🙁
3 year old orange DSH (thinks he is a dog and not a cat)
In the future I would love to keep adopting adult and senior dogs from local rescue groups
and i really really would like to get a rat

Three kittehs:
2 geriatric (hyper-T, CRF)
1 middle-aged brat
Future: Run a geriatric kitteh sanctuary in Malibu (with a koi pond and a masseusse!)
And some of you with zoos at home: :wow:
You should get in to school on that alone!

I just wanted to say thanks everyone for posting. I read everyone's post!😀 So much diversity! Looks like in the future all of us are going to be horse owners😎.

I thought I would bump this old thread and add some pictures of my new girls.....since there are no threads for pictures of pets(except in the lounge...where newbies are regaurded with less than kindness.) Ok ok so I am proud of my new girs and I want to show them off here.

From left to right: Mayo, Perry, Mayday....they love that window ledge!

Cuuuute! I love rats, but probably won't have any more any time soon.

If you want to see more pictures of pets, there are a few threads:

Thanks for that, scb44f, I guess I didn't include the word photo in my search, just picture...oh well

your dog is gorgeous, cowgirla!
