My dog passed about a year ago and I want to get another dog, but I'm concerned to get one when I am going to go into podiatry school.

Do any podiatry students out there own a dog?

Has anyone found time to take care of a dog?

I'm just concerned it would be cruel to make a dog sit home all day with no one there to let it out or play with it.

I got a dog my 3rd year in pod school. I also had a fiance/husband (married end of 3rd year) to help take care of the dog. The dog also had a bum leg from previous trauma (now he is a tri-pod) and he was about 3 when we addopted him. So he did not need tons of exercise just little walks around the block and longer explorations on the weekends. And I lived about a 20min walk to my apt while in school. My husband took care of the dog during the 3 months that I was externing away from NYC.

Remember that you will need to do something with the dog when you extern. It will be very difficult to take him/her with you, and you will work very long hours while externing.

It is difficult, but possible if you have people willing to help out when needed. I'd recommend addopting an adult dog - 3 or older and one that is not too high energy. You'll also need to be able to study and the dog will not appreciate if you study away from home all the time and leave him home, and you will not be able to study at home if the dog always wants to play.

I hope this was helpful.

Fortunately my wife's parents are going to take our dog during the 4th year for us. My dog is a house dog, so I found a doggie door to be helpful during the first and second year when I was studying.

Thanks for the inputs. I think I may hold off on getting one for awhile.

with a topic of pets in pod school youd think one would chime in about the convenience of reptiles! They require very little work and who can't say that turtles are totally rad.

Plus, btw, my mom has a cat and has one of those setups with 3 appliances, 1 for water 1 for food and a self cleaning cat box...so she does practically nothing other than by food !

just thought other alternatives may be helpful to some of you out there 🙂

by for purchasing is B-U-Y.

I know how much you like when people correct your grammer and spelling so I thought I would help!😀

I agree with krabmas... an adult dog may be ok if you're in a relationship and your spouse can help out, but darn near impossible if single living alone. Puppy is probably out of the question regardless. Long cinic hours, 4th year travels, limited student budget, residency sched and call nights, etc make it too hard and just not fair to the animal. Keep in mind a dog is a 10-15+ year committment, not just for a short time. You have to plan ahead and make a smart choice. I posted on this topic in another thread if it helps at all...

The studying is also a good point from Sam... I was logging PPRs just now with my dog continuously dropping toys at my feet. There is also the occasional bark in the background of my op report dictations. 😀

I'm bringing my pet frog and grasshopper to pod school. If krabmas misspells grammar as GRAMMER again, I'll have them assist her during suturing 🙂

It's pretty bad to have a mistake while correcting some one else's GRAMMER!

Now where are those frog and grasshopper?

hey, im just tryin to help! haha

anyways...who here thinks a turtle is the best animal ever!
(other than a cat or dog, naturally)

Well, a turtle doesn't eat much, it doesn't bark or chew up your stuff....Yeah, a turtle would be a good pet.

How about a pet rock???

I also had 2 turtles that I bought from chinatown in oid school.

Did you know that turtle pooh is big and smelly?

Did you know that turtles can live for 40 years?

Did you know that red eared sliders are snapping turtles?

still think they are good pets?

Yep.

My GIANT pet tortoise eating zucchini-- he eats too much

I heard that turtles/tortoises live to be a hundred years old

Now who had or has a pet snake?

As for my Kishon, Chuie, she's the best.

krabmas, what is your mailing address? I wanted to send you the frog and grasshopper via FedEx.
