just curious if anyone is doing an internship (and receiving intern hours) but no pay? is that allowed? I'd imagine it's never done but just curious.

Its done all the time when the internship (each school might call it a different thing) is tied to a class credit.

In CA, you can one or the other, but not both - class credit or intern hours.

Now...for state board requirements, your class credit will not count toward intern hours. However, working in a lab will be. But, you are limited to 500 hours (last time I looked, which admittedly is awhile ago) total.

Hope that helps!

that's not quite true. In your 4th yr, your rotations count towards class credit (for graduation) and intern hours (in CA, I believe these rotations count towards the 600 hours...900 on your own and 600 from rotations).

Anyway, of course if you're getting class credit, then there's no pay. But is it common (or ever done?) to earn intern hours (not credit) but no pay? My boss and I haven't discussed my pay yet but I kind of hope there is pay involved...or at least gas compensation (not close by)??

You're right - 900 hours in a pharmacy & 600 hours "at the discretion of the board for experience substantially related to the practice of pharmacy."

Don't know if a class would qualify. I've never signed intern hours for those hours I precepted a student.

😕

Hi
Where may I find the breakdown of how I must allot the required 1500 intern hours? I've checked the CA BOP site <http://www.pharmacy.ca.gov/forms/exam_info_update.pdf> and it just mentions the 1500 total requirement (no where do I see the 600 hours mentioned on here that are to be taken outside of school). The reason why I'm asking is that I'm from out of state, I'm required to do a total of 1500 (500 outside of school) in order to be licensed here. However, I would like to get a CA license as well so that I can work at home. Thanks!!

The Colorado state board allows 1,100 hours to be earned in P4 rotations and 400 hours must be earned in an outside internship before eligibility for licensure. No school rotation can pay wages, but the outside internship pretty much has to (otherwise no one would do it). If we satisfy the 400 hour requirement by the end of our P3 year, we only have to do seven rotations instead of eight.

The easiest route to take for this is to become licensed in the state you're currently in (I assume its the state your attending school in).

As a licensed pharmacist, you don't have to worry about the intern hours. You just have to complete the CPJE.

If you want the actual law #'s for CA, pm me. They're superfluous for those who aren't interested in CA.

maybe i wasn't clear b/c the essence of my question was not addressed.

regarding internships (i.e. NOT rotations), is it legal/possible/common/heard of for a pharmacy/facility to provide students w/ an internship WITHOUT pay($)? (note--pay or no pay was never discussed. how would i go about bringing up the issue of pay?). Without going into too many details, the idea of contacting previous intern students is not an option. Again, i'm going for hte experience but am driving an awfully long long distance and would at the very least like to be compensated for gas...

If it's not associated with a school rotation, I can't imagine why a pharmacy student would do an internship without pay. If a student has an intern pharmacist license, he/she should be paid for putting it to use unless school credit is involved. You need to demand a paycheck. If you won't do that, then I doubt anybody here will have advice for you.

Twester, I have not started interning for this place yet. The boss will call me tomorrow to figure out my dates. When he calls me back, how do I professionally bring this up on the PHONE w/ him? I've met w/ him a couple of times in person already so I highly doubt I will make that far of a drive there btw the phone call and when I actually start to discuss pay (say there is no gas compensation and I can't do it as a result...so i would want to know in advance regarding $). I'm doing the internship because it is an area I am interested in and may potentially work in that kind of area in the future. At the very minimum, I would like for gas compensation as it is pretty far from my shack.

My weakness is putting my feet down...according to my previous preceptors..🙁
