just curious if anyone is doing an internship (and receiving intern hours) but no pay? is that allowed? I'd imagine it's never done but just curious.
Its done all the time when the internship (each school might call it a different thing) is tied to a class credit.
In CA, you can one or the other, but not both - class credit or intern hours.
Now...for state board requirements, your class credit will not count toward intern hours. However, working in a lab will be. But, you are limited to 500 hours (last time I looked, which admittedly is awhile ago) total.
Hope that helps!
Hi
Where may I find the breakdown of how I must allot the required 1500 intern hours? I've checked the CA BOP site <http://www.pharmacy.ca.gov/forms/exam_info_update.pdf> and it just mentions the 1500 total requirement (no where do I see the 600 hours mentioned on here that are to be taken outside of school). The reason why I'm asking is that I'm from out of state, I'm required to do a total of 1500 (500 outside of school) in order to be licensed here. However, I would like to get a CA license as well so that I can work at home. Thanks!!
maybe i wasn't clear b/c the essence of my question was not addressed.
regarding internships (i.e. NOT rotations), is it legal/possible/common/heard of for a pharmacy/facility to provide students w/ an internship WITHOUT pay($)? (note--pay or no pay was never discussed. how would i go about bringing up the issue of pay?). Without going into too many details, the idea of contacting previous intern students is not an option. Again, i'm going for hte experience but am driving an awfully long long distance and would at the very least like to be compensated for gas...
If it's not associated with a school rotation, I can't imagine why a pharmacy student would do an internship without pay. If a student has an intern pharmacist license, he/she should be paid for putting it to use unless school credit is involved. You need to demand a paycheck. If you won't do that, then I doubt anybody here will have advice for you.
