do they ever just hand out this book or do i need to shove out the money to get it.................

Tarascon Pocket Pharmacopoeia, 2007 Classic Shirt-Pocket Edition (Paperback)

are there other better sources out there for drug referencing???

It's usually the infectious disease (antibiotic) reps who have the Pocket Pharmacopoeia. They also sometimes have the Sanford Guide, another good iD reference.

If you can't find somebody to give you one, it's only $11.95 from Tarascon. 😉

i've noticed drug reps tend to give out Sanford guide's but not pharmacopeia's 😎

Pharm reps are hot 👍

Seriously though, when do we get the swag? All I've gotten so far is TONS of pens and a clipboard. When does the good stuff come in - branded bags/packs like the neuro or anesthesia residents have, branded O.R. caps, free books, eh?

Are IM and Surgery the gold mine of free big pharm goodies?

I'm not sure about surgery or medicine, but we seem to be getting quite a bit of give-aways on psych. Actually, the NYT ran a few articles recently claiming that psychiatrists as a group receive the most in pharma payments/gifts.

I, too, am waiting for something original... something like a green Effexor dildo.

You get more stuff when you are actually a resident or practicing. The career length of someone in sales is not really long enough that it pays for them to woo you as a student (even if it is a smart business move for the company they work for).

I've gotten invited to the dinners they have to promote their drugs. Mmmm free food.

It's only free if you manage to leave before the presentation.

Yeah, you're right, it's too bad the presentation comes during dinner... I actually found the review of pharmacology helpful, and have already forgotten the name of the drug they were promoting. I feel it was a successful night in all 🙂

This is a brilliant idea.

Just put down 6-8 of the FREE drinks and you won't remember what the drug is or what company it was...!

LOL, if you think that's the "good stuff".

Back in the 1970's, they would give out free trips to Hawaii and Europe.

As recently as the mid-1990's, they were giving out things like pretty decent Swiss Army knives. They also had dine and dash dinners at good restraunts around town, where you could go and order as much food as you wanted and feed your family for a week. 👍

These days they give you cheap ballpoint pens, which aren't even worth using if you're used to good gel ones. And the free lunch consists of a turkey sandwitch or chicken parmesan.

2 good stories.

about 3 years ago, I went with my parents (one of who is an internist) to visit some cousins in Orlando (one of who is a psychiatrist). This cousin happened to have a drug rep dinner meeting at Ruth's Chris Steak House. We were allowed to tag along as my dad is a physician. At this dinner were roughly 6 psych docs with wives, my parents, myself, and 1 drug rep (pfizer I believe). The total bill for the dinner was roughly $2,500 for 15 ppl... I had a $70 steak!

I can remember probably about 7-8 years ago, just before the rules changed, being invited, along with my dad, to a golf outing. First we got brunch ($35 a pop at this club) followed by a round of golf ($175 a person). Please note that I was in high school at the time.

It is sad but I have to agree that drug reps former excess and give aways were detrimental to the system.

Edit: Just wanted to add that I also have a couple of very slick Viagra ties!

Wow, 14 posts into this thread, and no one has stopped by to whine about how free pens should be banned.

just received the most pathetic set of 'goodies' from a drug rep today...i always ask the reps for some free stuff and today i was amazed at what this chick dished out...after 5 minutes of sifting thru her bag she comes out with a 2 by 2 inch magnet and a pocket sized COPD tx algorithm card

gee thanks lady

AstraZenaca takes us out to dinner the other night for 75 bucks a pop and you give me a friggin' magnet.

🙄
