I will be attending The Ohio State University this fall to start pharmacy school and I am curious about joining the Navy. I know the financial benefits and that it is a 3 year commitment after graduation, but the big question is will I be deployed in those 3 years, and what that likelihood might be? If anyone, preferably someone in the Navy, could shed some light on this that would be great.

I am not in the Navy but if you thinking about joining the Navy purely for the financial reason, please look elsewhere.

When you join the armed forces, you must understand that there will be time away from family, friends due to the duty station assigned or deployment.

Will you be deployed? I don't know. But, you shouldn't be surprised if you are ordered to do so.

My girlfriend was a navy pharmacists for 8 years. She was honorably discharged from the Navy as LT. She had many duty posts, from small clinic to a major Navy hospital. She was not deployed during her time in the Navy.

Are you kidding me? What a gutless chickensh**...

You would of fell out of your chair with what I originally wrote! somethings just absolutely astonish me...I get the fact deployment sucks (I've deployed), but it's not the end of the world...

I guess I lost my touch. Hope you are having fun and doing well in Germany.

Man you guys are idiots. I was curious about it and have no problem if I was deployed. The question still remains, and why would you come onto this website to insult someone with an honest question ? You seriously must be bored. I have a family and would rather be with them than spend a year with a bunch of dudes. Maybe you roll that way but I don't.

I hate that you took my comment as an insult, I was giving you an honest response. Chances are, you will deploy if we are at war or if there is a natural disaster somewhere in the world. The Navy always sends their people to natural disaster locations. The fact you think the military is just "dudes", shows how little you know about the military...perhaps you would serve yourself better by not assuming...

Of course you meant it as an insult. Don't act like you didnt. I asked an honest question that thousands before me have asked. Why you think it seems like such an outlandish question I have no idea. You could have simply not responded or given an honest answer rather than insult me. It was pathetic. I assumed this was a location where I could get an honest answer and not be judged by some guy on the internet. Next time don't post, all it did was made you seem like a total dick.

Your initial question, based on the context that was presented, gave the readers an impression that you are hesitant about pursing a career in the Navy due to that fact that there is a chance that you may be deployed.

Any informed person can deduce the following. Military Commitment = Chance of deployment. Just as being a retail pharmacist = dispensing medication.

How can I not make a comment when the original post lack this simple understanding?

Having said that I did provide you with some information based on my girlfriend's experience.

Please, if you know this question was answered thousand times before, please use the search function.

Excuse me General Patton, but you are way out of line. The OP simply asked a question. If your mentality or mind set is any indication of what makes up today's Medical Corp then I suggest you stay in the Army. The outside world has neither the time or patience to deal with likes you.

I guess I should rely on some random Internet person's opinion about my career interests like the op...

For those with thin skin, pharmacy is not the career to be in!

Anyone who thinks its a drag to have to live in Germany hasn't got a clue. Germany and all the other places u can go to while being in the military or working for the government are awesome awesome experiences. The cities there are far more advanced than most any here in the US.

The cities where? All cities with U.S. Military presence? Tell that to Kandahar, Afghanistan. Or just permanent military installations? Guantanamo Bay, anyone? Even Naples, Italy can't figure out how to collect trash or have clean water that's safe to drink half the time...

Listen, the military isn't for everyone. Remember, even if we aren't at war the Navy is 100% on watch and deploys during peace time as well. While at war we are called upon to support our Marine Corps brothers and sisters in operational billets as well as filling in as Individual Augmentees with the Army when they cannot fill their spots. In fact, a Navy pharmacist has been filling an Army IA billet in Afghanistan throughout the most recent conflict.

The Navy does not issue a family in your sea bag, You WILL be away from them whether you deploy or not. You will be sent TAD (Temporary Additional Duty) to all sorts of undesirable locations both in CONUS and OCONUS. You will work weekend duties, night duties, holiday duties - all in addition to your normal 40 hours (with NO additional pay). You will stand hospital watches that are not in any way related to being a pharmacist. You will receive a tasker on the Friday afternoon at 1300 with a due out of Monday at 0700. You will get it done on your own time. The last thing your fellow LTs will want to hear is that you can't pick up your fair share of night shift callout coverages because you "have a family." No one cares.

I'm not trying to be rough about it but I need all potential Naval Phamacists to understand. You DO NOT punch your 40 hours and go home! If that's what you want, the military is not for you.

Thrilled to see someone else that gets it! Great advice! 👍

Rutgers and caverject,
what was your process of getting into the navy? did you apply for scholarship while you were in school? or did you join after you finished?

Hmm I heard you go in at a higher rank if you go into the Air Force (I believe I was told starting as a Captain). Not entirely sure how all the rankings equal out but that's what I was told back when they were trying to recruit me (of course they could've been blowing smoke up my ***).

I had a close friend that was commissioned into the Navy this year. They didn't take many. His first deployment is Guantanamo Bay.
