PharmD/ MPH
Started by ahhhhhhhhhh
I'm from California, so I only know of UCSF (has joint MPH with UC Berkeley, one of the top schools for getting your MPH) and USC. Both have five year PharmD/MPH programs.

These pharmacy schools also offer the 5 year dual degree in PharmD/MPH:
University at Buffalo
University of Maryland in Baltimore
Ohio State University
University of Iowa
University of Florida
Those are the ones I know off the top of my head.

Look at the pdf table to the far right under "other."
I just noticed that USC does not list their MPH program for next year, but I haven't heard anything about them dropping it...
The aacp website is an excellent resource. It is difficult to navigate, but worth the effort.
Also double check that your scholarship will cover both the tuition for the PharmD and the MPH, not just the one year of MPH studies. Otherwise it may not be worth it, depending on your interests.

Hi there, I'm actually an MPH student from UB applying to PharmD for fall 2009. I know that University at Buffalo just started a joint pharmd/mph program for fall of 2009. our public health school should be accredited within the next year. You can find more info on the UB pharmacy website or just email them. I believe it takes 5 years. hope this helps!😳

Hi!! I am very interested in doing the PharmD/MPH degree at Buffalo. How would you rate their public health program since you are in it now? And what is your concentration in if you don't mind me asking?

The MPH degree is definitely worthwhile to have. My concentration is environmental health because it allowed me to take a Toxicology class which I thought may benefit my chances of pharmd acceptance. The program is pretty good here. Every semester it seems to be getting better, they're really working hard on the accreditation and shuffling around a lot of faculty. Last time I heard they predict to be accredited by late fall 2009. My experience has been mixed- my class just kind of feels cheated since we won't be able to benefit from the accreditation- we graduate in May so it doesn't apply to us. Which means that when we go to look for jobs we can't work for any federal agencies like- CDC or EPA or NIH etc because they only take accredited graduate..which sucks for us. But for someone to come in for 2009 it would be a better experience and you would benefit with the accreditation. Coming from a pharmacology BS I've definately learned a lot and feel more well rounded and glad that I'm in the program. 😳
If you have any other questions feel free to ask, hope this helps!
Hi Krista, I, too, am toying with the idea of doing the 5 yr dual pharmd/mph program. You said the the mph is definitely worthwhile, I'd like to get your opinion on why. What opportunities would be opened with a pharmd/mph in federal agencies or other organizations. Do you know anything about the job outlook for those positions? Thanks much. 🙂

Hi there, to answer some of your questions about MPH, it was definitely a worthwhile experience for me. It might not be for everyone. Coming into the program I knew nothing about public health, I had a BS in pharmacology. I took all science based classes before. I never really understood the big picture of healthcare. Basically, you learn about health issues that are happening now and that are actually relevant in the real world when you graduate. I know that sounds cheesy but honestly thats how I would sum it up.
As far as opportunities go with a pharmd/MPH I would say you could just practice on a more macro level, for instance maybe you could be like a public health pharmacist and be involved in mass immunizations or like if there was a bioterrorist attack, you might be involved more in like community primary preventions or screening activities. I'm not really sure exactly what you could do, I'd imagine you could work for FDA doing a number of things. For me ultimately I'd like to be like a director of a pharmacy or a pharmacy manager-- an MPH and PharmD would be benificial for me to have if I wanted a job like that. Heres the website at UB, click around there are some job links and more information:

They also my have info on the pharmacy/pharmaceutical sciences website.
I have a friend who got an MPH/JD and these were the course he had to take with us in 1 year: intro to medical stats, intro to epidemiology, history of public health, environmental health, biological basis of public health, healthcare organizations, and health behavior. I think you would take like all the "core courses". Personally I really enjoyed epidemiology and environmental health the most. I've taken an epidemiology course every semester and it still confuses me but it's really interesting and it makes you think in ways you don't normally think.
I hope I explained this ok, does this help?
😳
Thanks! The curriculum really does sound interesting. I'll make a decision at the end of next semester. My program wants us to let them know by our second year, give or take.
