Phi Beta Kappa...?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Personally I just put that I was nominated to join. After joining all those other honor societies, I decided they were all a scam. The key is to squeeze out a leadership position so your money isn't totally wasted.

so i was officially accepted to PBK, and from your guys opinions it seems like its worth joining

is it a big enough deal to send out an update letter to my waitlist schools, or should I wait until I have something else to update and just include it with that? I guess it's more of a timing question (i prob wont have anything else of interest to send out until mid june)

PBK is worth putting in an up-date letter. It is one more way to say, "I"m thinking of you and hope you will think of me."

Thanks for all your help here and in the NU waitlist thread Lizzy! 👍

You need a liberal arts basis, but that doesn't have to be your major. I'm a biology major, and I got in.

is there any way to know who nominated you? i didn't know i was nominated i just thought there was some sort of formula and then they looked at coursework.

You can only get nominated by faculty who were also phi beta kappa, not that it narrows it down, but it still makes it feel kinda cool

$75? I only had to pay $25 😕 Considering how poor I am, the $75 might have made me rethink joining. j/k

so exactly how do we join? Does someone has the link to it? Or is it by invitation only? how does it work?

invitation only, first check to make sure your school has a chapter and maybe ask a professor or student who is already in, assuming your grades are pretty good.

It is definitely by invitation only, but it depends on the school how many people are invited. At my school there is more than 1% of the class (class of 300 =3 people, I'd say there were more like 25-30 seniors there). Also, my GPA was not in the top 5-10% of the class I don't think, but I was a double major in French and Biological Chemistry, which meant that I had a "liberal arts education"--aka took different kinds of classes, including 5 semesters or more of a foreign language. My GPA was a 3.65; there were people with 3.9's that didn't have the language and science requirements and thus didn't get invited.

So I think, yeah, it's a big honor, but there are tons of people probably smarter than I am who didn't get invited to join, so don't worry too much if you are one of them.

i think you have to be invited to join. i received a weird email a couple weeks back asking for reccomendation letters from my department head, with no wording indicating what it was for. they try and keep how and who they select a secret at my school, altho im not really sure why. anyways, its $55
