is Phi Beta Kappa a really big deal as an organisation or do they just like to tout themselves?
is it worth mentioning in applications?

by the way, is organization the british spelling?

Yes, it is a big deal. Mention it. And congratulations.

"Organisation" is the British spelling of "organization."

lol, i always confuse british and american spelling
I got a professor to look over my AMCAS essay and he found like ten words which I had spelled the british way and he made me change them

thanks for the advice too

i am part of phi beta kappa too, but do any of you guys know how they select you to join?? what is it based on? just curious i guess. thanks.

you can actually nominate yourself. but you need a professor to back up your nomination.

i know a large part of their selection process depends on gpa,

so you have to have a certain gpa, PLUS have a professor recommend you? also, is it that big of a deal? my family seemed to be more happy than me about it.

I think every chapter has its own criteria for election to Phi Beta Kappa. At UC Davis, it is as follows:

"An overall UC grade point average of 3.7 for seniors and 3.8 for juniors. For transfer students, the total undergraduate record and cumulative GPA must meet this standard.

Knowledge of a foreign language at an "intermediate level," the equivalent of one year of college-level study. Extensive high school study, i.e., four years, is accepted.

Letters and Sciences units totaling 135 for seniors and 90 for juniors.

Seventy-five units completed for letter-grade credit at Davis.

College preparatory level mathematics.

Breadth in the course record: three courses or twelve units completed for letter-grade credit in the humanities, natural sciences and social sciences. "
