Is anyone else in this? I just got invited, apparently it is for the top 7.5% of juniors and top 10% of seniors. Im just not sure if it is worth the $60 to join. What do yall think??

Never heard of it (my undergrad didn't have it), but it looks legit. If $60 isn't going to bankrupt you, I'd say go for it.

For the record, I joined Psy Chi and Beta Beta Beta which are both academic honors societies that have much lower name-recognition. Maybe I'm just a joiner by nature...

I'd say don't waste your money. If you have a high gpa an adcom will recognize this, and will probably applaud you for not joining phi kappa whatever and looking like a sheep.

lol, probably so.

We have it on my campus. (small school) It seems to be a parallel honor society to PBK, and it's been around for quite a while (I think my dad is even in it). I joined. I don't see what the harm would be.

has it impacted my life one iota?

nope,

my dad and sister had heard of it however, and they said they were somewhat jealous. there are some scholarships and fellowships associated with PKP, and you could publish in their journal/newsletter, which in some professions might look good but in medicine probably wouldn't matter. But also its a nice non-profit organization that in general uses membership dues to support education, so its not like you're throwing money away on a bad cause, and its not a scheme like those Who's Who for College student books.

go ahead and join

Whenever you write your CV later in life, you can put it on that too. I joined the German honor society because lifetime dues were $10, and I had good enough grades. Now that I'm working on my CV for residency, I can put it and the other honor society I'm in, (with a bit more name recognition) onto my CV.

I wish my college had BBB. We had no chapter, therefore, I couldn't join it.

Those clubs are like anything else, if you're an active member it can help you, if you don't do anything I doubt it will hurt you. You usually get honor cords too when you graduate, which if your ego needs a boost can make you feel better about yourself 😛

Join and apply for the scholarships ... PKP is one of the few (like one or two) that actually seem to have a chance to be worth it if you take advantage of what they offer

Agreed. 👍 After joining, I've applied for and received almost 6K in scholarships! Go for it.

imo, waste of money; you might as well join Golden Key, NSCS, etc. while you're at it. Let the adcoms know just how special you really are 😛

I'd also add that it's an opportunity for leadership as well, if you want. You can always run for a position in your college's chapter. Treasurer, President, VP, and the like might make it more legitimate looking than just being a member.

join...its the equivalent of pbk at small schools...i'm in it and they have a nice fellowship program where you can get some serious $$ for med school if you fill out a pretty easy application

I've always viewed these PhiKappaBetaSigmaDeltaOmega societies as a big fluff of hype. I've never been in one, so maybe my perspective is whack. Maybe it's because I'm Canadian.😛

Congrats on the honor!

If they have scholarships... I think it'd be a good idea to go after them.

What's $60 in the face of thousands spent (or will be spent)?

I'm in Phi Beta Kappa. Sure I put in on my CV & list of ECs, but it hasn't done much so far in terms of med school adcom. These sororities and honor societies just demonstrate your well-roundedness and great achievements (grades, volunteerism, & involvement during your UG years). It's the recognition that counts.

I joined PBK, and I regret it. I paid money for no good reason.
Should had just not joined, and put "Invited to join Phi Beta Kappa" on my resume. Same recognition, just free.
