Hi all,
SO my 2013 journey has ended with 4 rejections and well....3 silent rejections. I've just got an email from BU saying how regret they were that they could not admit me. I have just finished my application for 2014, so I figure I gave them a call, and this is what I got.
Weakness:
Apply too late
GPA not competitive.
Strength: DAT score seems on-par according to him.
Remedies that he suggested:
Apply early which I did this year.
Possibly looking into some Biomed master to prove that I can handle tough courses.
I am very sad now. I am recent graduate with bio major, no "real job", owned loan of 30K, my car broke and so is my pocket. The last 2 grands I had, I pour it into this cycle. But I am feeling lost and uncertain.....anyone feels the same? anyone been in the same shoes and overcome this and achieve the goal of dentistry? I need some advises, some motivating story as I am right now at the bottom of bottom.

My stats:
cGPA: 3.3
sGPA: 3.3
1 year dental assistant, 1 year nurse assistant. several hours of volunteers in various fields. 3 months of research.
DAT 20/21/21.
My last year at school: 3.75 on fall, and 4.0 on Spring ( with a W though)

I really need some advises now.....really! What schools do you think I should tackle this year? Sorry if I put some stress on some of you at the beginning of the cycle....

I think all the reasons BU suggested are a good starting point. A postbac instead of masters is another alternative.

Edit: Just out of curiosity, when did you apply last cycle? And what schools did you apply to?

All of my application was done around Nov last year. I applied to 7 schools, cant remember them all but NYU, BU, USC were on the list

Cheer up! Think of it a precious experience and use it so that you will never make the same mistake again. I actually 'wasted' a year due to late application and preparation. But I didn't waste it, instead took some lab work and did good score on exams. It all works out great now. You will definitely appreciate the offer better too!

So, calm down and cheer up. Also maybe talk to the other schools that rejected you and asked them the reasons and fix them in this year!

You just applied too late. Send out your application ASAP and apply to 15 schools this time.

This is really late in the application cycle to apply.

not sure if when you took your DAT but just letting you know BU(and a couple other schools) accepts DAT's that are no older than 2 years.

DAT taken on Sept 2012. So yeah it wouldnt be a problem

Bro,

You're going to have a good go of things this year. You applied too late last year is all. Get a good job and make some money before your interviews start rolling in. Just make to Ace those interviews - be professional, smile, be attentive, have a rough outline of what you want to get across, be SPECIFIC (which will automatically make you unique), make sure everything you have to say is LOGICAL!!!!. Don't say stuff that makes you sound naive, uninformed, or selfish.

most of all - don't speak negatively about anything or anyone during the interview... I saw this a lot on the interview trail last year during the groups.

GL - I think you'll get in this year. Forget the masters & maybe even BU for suggesting it lol.

Agreed. Your main problem was just the late application. I've heard of students with similar scores as yours getting in, it's just a matter of applying early. If you still have some money left over, give it another go during this application cycle, and you should have no problem getting in. Your DAT scores are above average, so don't sweat it bro!

Don't worry! I am on the same boat as yours. My scores were average, but I got rejected because of late application. I am pretty sure you can make it this cycle. Just apply early!

Hope to hear good news from you soon...
Good luck! 🙂

I hope so too man! Maybe I should forget about BU. Have you got into dental school yet? I just wish for 1 interview so I can have a chance to impress the adcom. It's scary to look over other threads where super stars with 3.9 gpa and 25 DAT roaming around lol...

Those people are "outliers" and considering there seems to be 100 of then on SDN I say the stats for some are fudged a little to get an ego stroke. In a nutshell don't compare stats to other people. Most schools pick interviews based on a holistic approach. Just have confidence. You determine your own future.

I am trying not to. Hopefully this will be a good year for me since I am emotionally and financially drained out right now. If I am not getting in this year, I plan to have such plans below:
Plan A: get into a master of biomed program hat links to dental schools,
Plan B: change direction to podiatry
Plan C: pursue radiology since it has lots of opportunities for advancement.
Plan D: Dental hygiene ( this is very very unlikely )

It would suck if I have to walk away from dentistry, but I have to move on and start making money to secure my life now. I wish I knew then what I know now when all those undergrand years I was so careless with my gpa....

honestly I don't think you need to do a masters. Masters just consumes time and it is costly. Just don't apply to BU. They are pretty tough and honestly I got rejected from them to. Have a lot of volunteering hours and working in dental field as well an amazing essay. One thing I learned is that don't lose hope 🙂. AND don't give up on your dream to become a dentist if this is what you really want to do with your life. Since you have a lot of dental assistant work, I would try for the Arizona schools and Midwestern Arizona/ Illinois schools as well. BU just has a specific gpa and dat score they want before they will give out an interview. O and don't forget to apply to NYU. they love accepting people with low GPA and high DAT score.

They didn't give a reason but I got into other schools, some which I find "better" than BU, so I don't care to really find out. I landed up having a 3.6 in the program

Wow, that's some BS. Dropping ~$50k on BU's masters program and achieving a 3.6GPA still doesn't get you into their dental school?! Well, I'm glad you got into other dental schools and to hell with BU for that.

Bu master program costs a whole lot of money. I am glad that you found ur destination anyway. I am thinking of crossing out BU this cycle too eventhough I met the requirement of 3.4 sgpa due to 1 year of solid As. I also got invitation from MWU at Illinois to a master program there too, cost is 30K 🙁((

Plan B: change direction to podiatry

It would suck if I have to walk away from dentistry, but I have to move on and start making money to secure my life now.

Apply to tons of d-schools this cycle, and take one of the last MCATs offered in September. Maybe take one practice test (there is a free one on the MCAT website), and then just take the MCAT cold. You probably won't do super great cause you didn't study, but if you got a 20 on your DAT you can do better than a 20 on your MCAT...

shadow a pod for ~10 hours this summer.

If you don't get any bites in early december from dental schools, send your podiatry app out to the schools you want to apply to.

You're already 50k into this, so the extra couple hundred for the MCAT, another 250 for podiatry applications, and another 500 for traveling to interviews is just a drop in the bucket if you want to be a doctor/see patients.

I did the BU OHS program and they also didn't accept me this past cycle. Not bad mouthing BU but don't go off of one school. Take what they say as constructive criticism and speak to all the schools you applied to last cycle so you can get a better idea of where the "bad" points are in your app. Also, I think it is helpful to show interest in a school early on and try to speak with the dean of admissions - they would be the most honest and helpful! Good luck and you'll do great!

Hey there, I'm highly considering applying to this program but as I was looking through their FAQs on the page, I realized they only accept 15-20 students. Does this mean it is a very selective program or do not many people apply to it?
