Hi. I wanted to ask you guys if physical chemistry is important in preparation for pharmacy school. I was wondering because I was deciding between majoring in biology or biochemistry.....and I know biochemistry is important...but I'm not sure about p-chem.

I appreciate any help.

Thank You! 🙂

Either a bio or chem degree will help. Usually, prereqs require 2 gen chems, 2 ochems, at least 3 bios + anatomy and physiology. You might look into one of the degrees and see if you can get an minor/option in the other that fulfills most of the prereqs. Check out this link for a prereq spreadsheet of most schools: http://aacp.org/site/view.asp?TRACKID=&VID=2&CID=1667&DID=7082

^Nah, i think dude wants to know if he/she is going to get anything out of a p-chem class. I personally haven't taken the course, but many get by without taking it. As for whether it's good prep for pharmacy school...this question is best answered by someone who has almost finished pharmacy school & has taken a p-chem class during their undergrad yrs. hopefully they'll show up to this thread. also, remember that every pharmacy school has their own unique cirriculum (usually addressed in their mission statement), so you may/may not need much background in p-chem - im not totally sure about this though. anyway, im really curious to know as well.

While i have not started pharmacy school, i just finished a course in p-chem last semester and I cant see it playing a huge part in pharm school preparation. It pretty much takes the basic thermodynamic properties that you learn and gen chem and goes into INTENSE detail on them. Im speculating that we will need to know thermodynamics and kinetics to some degree in pharm school but prob not to the degree that pchem covers. Also, i have not seen any pharm school that requires it as a prereq. Like the above poster said, someone who has been through pharm school and has taken it in undergrad can shed some better light to this question though. Just my two cents.

O all right. Thanks for the info guys. Can a moderator please move this to the pharmacy section? Thanks in advance!

I was a chem major, so two pchem courses were required for my degree. I know UCSF is one of the rare (if not only?) programs that have any use for pchem. Unlike my undergrad coursework, the pharmacy pchem is actually biophysical chem, which I think is a lot easier. The good thing is that those who took and still remember enough pchem (no equation sheet!!!) to pass a comprehensive test can waive a quarter of the biophysical chem. There are two separate quarters, so you would need to pass two comp exams.

Here I am - well, I've almost finished pharmacy school. Anyway, I can tell you with a great degree of relief that I needed nothing from my two semesters of pchem for pharmacy school (and it's a d*** good thing too, given that I got the worst grades of my life in pchem). At least at my school, the kinetics and such that you need do not really require any calculus, so you should be fine from what you got in general chemistry.

Biochem is much more useful for pharmacy school.

Oooo I see. Thanks for your reply. 🙂

Heck no! P Chem is only good for screwing up your GPA. I hated that class- Calc, Physics and Chemistry. It was a nightmere. Stay far away!! 🙂
