My brother is in high school and thinking of going into Optometry. He is really good at Physics (getting A's with no outside help, and the high school standard is good).

With this in mind, would a BS in Physics with a concentration in Optics be a good pre-Optometry degree? Another option is a Biophysics degree with a few Optics courses. He doesn't want to do the more common straight Biology pre-health path. Also, he was thinking of double majoring/degree Physics with Psychology (another interest of his, and the Psychology degree is a BA so this double degree is doable)

anything is fine as long as you complete the pre-opt reqs...

We have people in my class with the most off-the-wall majors you can think of and they're doing fine. Your brother sounds like a smart kid, if he can handle a degree like that, he should go for it! But there's no need for him to run himself into the ground if it's going to be extremely difficult.

Truth,

Your brother should pursue a major that he has interest in because:

1) He may be intrigued by something and find that he ultimately doesn't want to do optometry after all.

2) He may not be admitted to optometry school.

The pre-requisite requirements for optometry school are not particularly onerous and are easily worked into any science based major. So again, he should go with a major that he finds interesting.
