Hi all,

I'm debating whether I should take College Physics 1 and 2 (plus labs) over the summer, since it is offered here at UH-Manoa. I'm not that great in Physics, I forgot most of the stuff I learned in high school, but I'm willing to read up during the Spring Semester before I start over the summer. What are your thoughts, is it worth it, advantages, disadvantages? Is it possible to take Physics/Labs and another Science Course (such as Biology, Orgo Lecture?)

By the way I've attended summer sessions last year so I'm kinda used to the everyday wake-up schedule 😴

thanks in advance for the help!

I took my physics requirements over the summer. I completed in class lectures and lab during the summer which was nice since I only concentrated on physics. It also lightened up my schedule during soph year since I was taking Organic and Bio class.

If the professor is good, go for it.. I had a really really easy teacher for my phys. over the summer so no complaints here 🙂 If you are strong in math that helps too. First section is usually just a whole bunch of equations and plug here and know your SACATOE or whatever that trig crap is 🙂.

It would depend on the quality of the professor, and the intensity of the course at your particular school. I took the two semesters of physics and labs over the summer while studying for the Aug MCATs and did fine, but it was the most intense, stressful and draining experience of my life and I really couldn't recommend it.

Hi Skeptrix!

Scope it-- I took my physics requirements over a summer as well. It does indeed matter mucho whom your profs are, and how intense the program is For me, I was able to do it, with the labs, and get an A in both mini-semesters. However, the second prof I had was ancient and kinda nuts, and many people failed the course. I t was a struggle all the way. If you do do it, I would dedicate your time to it, to really kick @ss and take names. I wouldn't do it simultaneous to other science courses or MCAT study. That'll result in mediocre grades in physics, a crappy MCAT score, and mucho frustration. It's doable, but don't bite off more than you can chew.

I took physics 2 last summer, 4 credit hrs w/ a lab, at a community college. I was also taking 8 hrs at my university and studied for the Aug MCAT. Due to the number of hours I was taking I was unable to attend any of my physics lectures, and taught myself out of the book. So for me the professor didn't make any difference. I got an A in physics, granted it was a community college, and a 33 on the MCAT. I was a total zombie that entire summer, but I'm glad I took the class b/c I do believe it helped on the MCAT. Had I taken the class alone it would have been a piece of cake.

I took analytical chemistry the summer after sophomore year -- 4 days a week, lecture at 7:30, lab until 1..it was a little much on top of working in my research lab, etc. I didn't really get much of a break, but it was good to have it out of the way. If I had it to do over again, I wouldn't have taken a lab course over the summer -- it just eats up too much time when it's condensed into 8 weeks. But if you think you might have trouble with it, it's nice to only have to focus on the one class. The accelerated pace is a killer though. We had lab reports to do nearly every night.
