Hi everyone,

I'm new here. I've been wondering about which physics class will satisfy the requirements for an osteopathic medical school. I know there are threads in the allopathic forums, but I'm specifically wondering about osteopathic schools.

Do osteopathic schools require a calculus-based physics class or not? The MCAT doesn't technically require calculus for its physics section, right?

Algebra-Based Physics will suffice for all medical schools in the United States DO or MD.

I wish I had known this. I suffered through calculus based physics and did poorly which made my sGPA suffer 🙁 and then I got a 13 on PS MCAT lolwut.

lol. i hear you. I took all the AAMC practice exams and my lowest PS score was a 12 and my highest BS was a 9, so when I got a 10 BS and an 8 PS i was shocked. happy, but shocked.

Some schools will mention that they prefer calculus based physics.

I never heard of this. I wonder why they would prefer calc based physics since the MCAT is strictly algebra based. What good will calc do in medschool? Strange.

I also took calc based physics and it was a pain.

Also, I thought MCAT physics is trig based physics? I guess it's more algebra than trig, but I always thought of physics as either calc based or trig based.

Wait, what?

What good will Physics do in med school? I've heard that Organic Chem isn't even useful in med school.. not even in the pharmacology block. Silly hoops we need to jump through 🙁

Yeah, most of the pre-req classes just serve to weed people out. Pretty much all college is in my opinion. Who can hang in there and handle the course load.

Ohhhh yea all of undergrad was a weeb scam

I understand the normal sciences like bio chem etc have clinical experiments that you do

but physics? 😕

Why would it? Pharmacology is all about memorizing what drugs do, you don't need to know mechanisms, just a little basic cellular metabolism. From what I understand there are specialties like radiology, which are very physics heavy and as such having students with a physics foundation may be helpful.

Organic chemistry's significance lies in the biochem block probably, though it probably isn't all that useful then even. But hey, I'm sure working for organic chem helps you a little.

I have actually found the physics foundation useful...flow, force, etc are concepts that are very integrated into cardiology for example. Ochem on the other hand, I did find nearly 100% useless. Sigh...I always said getting into medical school truly was a test of who could be the best hoop jumper 🙂

I think I'm just going to opt for trig-based physics this year instead of calc-based. Are there any schools known to want calc-based?

Besides genchem and bio courses, I don't understand why physics and ochem are prereqs, with my only reasoning is weeding people out like you mentioned. Ah, ochem 2! Ahhh! lol. How's the MCAT studying going?
