I'm doing my undergrad and now i reallyyyyyyy need to pick a major, but my premed advisor said business is not such a good idea...although all the books say pick watever you want...i'm scared that if i pick business, it will effect my chances of getting into med school. plzzzzzzzzzzzzz help me, and also if there is a business major out there who hasgotten into med school, i'd really like to hear what you have to say.

im no BA major, but if you can do that while doing your premed reqs im sure it will be awesome.

BA is a useful major especially if you go on to get an MBA. MD/MBA is pretty impressive and useful when you become a practicing physician because it can open a lot of doors for you. I think we need more MD/MBAs to help things like policy and health care.

If other majors can get into med school, why not business as well?

Do it! 😉

Jasmine,

By all means, pick a major that you like and that you will enjoy studying. Business was the major I chose, and I think it has actually helped my application to medical school.

I have had several interviews so far, and I have heard very good things from some of my interviewers. Granted, I applied with several years of actual business experience after graduating with a business degree. The fact is that there are far fewer people applying with the interests you describe.

In addition, if you enjoy business and can focus your studies on subjects and projects that are relevant to healthcare, then you can show that you have an understanding of the industry beyond that you would receive as a hospital volunteer or physician shadower. Although, those experiences are still valuable.

Bottom line: don't listen to your advisor and listen to yourself. Choose to study what interests you because you'll enjoy college much more. I'm glad I chose business, and I'm accepted to med school for 2008.

Feel free to ask me any other questions, I'm happy to share my experiences.

Major in WHATEVER YOU WANT. All you'll study in med school is science... now's your chance to learn about other things! Having a non-science major will make you stand out in a sea of science majors applying to med school.

Always remember: pre-med advisors DON'T KNOW WHAT THEY'RE TALKING ABOUT. Sad, but true. If I'd let them talk me out of applying (which they tried), I wouldn't be here.

I think you should absolutely pursue the major that interests you the most. Med schools like well-rounded applicants, so as long as you do well on your premed prereqs and keep your overall GPA high, you should be able to have whatever major you want. Plus, if you're in a major that really interests you, you're more likely to perform well and have a better GPA.

Referring to business specifically, I don't think it'll hurt you at all. I have a master's in business and I've been accepted to med school. A solid grounding in business will only help in terms of running a practice and dealing effectively with a (currently) crazy healthcare system. Good luck!
