what do you think the chances are that airport security would let someone take a pie on the plane with them?

bought outside the airport, of course.

Send it over to me and I'll examine it and let you know.

But, seriously, I think it's doubtful since pie filling probably falls under the same restrictions as yogurt and other highly threatening food substances. Put it in a blender, pour it into a clear 3.oz container, put that in a 1 gallon ziplock, and you have a chance.

it should be fine, i bring food (like pasta with sauce, chicken tetrazini, etc) through all the time. just put it in a bag and don't mention it, and you'll be fine.

If it's possible check it. Otherwise you might get some fat and greedy TSA employee seeing a nice big pie on the xray scanner, which will, of course, have to be confiscated ;p

if u put it in ur luggage u ll be fine, but ur pie is gonna be flatter or it might not survive

I'm not putting a pie in checked baggage to get thrown around. You guys say that like you have no respect for a delicious pie.

This thread is cracking me up. I don't even understand why its so funny but it is.

Anyway I thought you weren't allowed to bring any food into the terminal itself and you had to buy it there.

But yeah if theres a way you can stow it away in checked baggage without getting damaged i'd say thats your best bet.

 If you respect it so much why would you let it languish on a flight? Perhaps belly-transport would be safest.

I dunno. Somebody brought me a delicious (ceramic) bowl of homemade halwah all the way from the Middle East, through Europe, and then through a few legs of a U.S. trip. he even made it through Heathrow with it. I figure that if he could get that through there, you might have a chance with something people recognize, like pie. (Make it apple, or something pretty firm like that.)

By the way, did you know that Krispy Kreme makes WEDDING CAKES???!!!!!???!!!! 😱

All I need now is a fiancee. 😎

you can bring food into the terminal, just not drinks. last time i traveled (2 weeks ago), i had a fair amount of food, no one said anythign. it was through ohare.

I used to work for TSA, there should be no issue bringing a pie through the security check point. It will have to go through the xray machine with your carry on and shoes though. Just make sure it isn't prison style (baked in brass knuckles etc).

several important questions have been posed, and I will address them now.

The pie in question is a Marie Callenders double cream blueberry pie. These pies cannot be found in Tennessee, and my wife, who lives in Tennessee, is a big fan of them. I will be traveling to Texas soon, where these pies do exist.

Pie lovers will know that 3oz is not a sufficient portion to satisfy one who craves a pie which they cannot easily obtain. A ziploc bag is not an option.

Regarding not bringing any pie onboard, suggesting that I eat it all before the flight, refer to mental image of angry wife, couch, no sex, etc.

One solution is to eat it before flight and then regurgitate it later. Thing is the pie might get a little bit soggy.

But in all seriousness I don't think you'll have a chance at getting a whole pie through. Maybe a slice.

I agree with redrumi. It depends on the filling. Protocol dictates that a TSA agent follow the "Little Jack Horner Rule," which states:

TSA Agent Horner sat in the corner,
Checking the pies that go by,
If he sticks in his thumb and pulls out a gun,
Better bet that pie ain't gonna fly.

you're not lying to me, are you?

We just flew to las vegas a few weeks ago and brought back a lot of food that we can't get at home.

wings from bw3s with blue cheese dressing and about 3 bowls of beef from yoshinoya with broth and didn't have any problems. Some of the tsa agents made jokes about confiscating the food but only b/c they thought it smelled good. I was a little worried about the dressing and all the juice in the beef but they didn't even mention it.

You should be fine. It actually says in the carry on rules for some airlines that you are allowed to bring food on the plane as an additional carryon.

Airport security: Sir, what is that box you're carrying?
Armybound: Oh this? It's a pie.
Airport security: CODE RED! CODE RED! He's got a programmable improvised explosive!

*5 hours later, Guantanamo bay*

Armybound: Harold? . . . Kumar!?!?

Looks like no medical school for you .

Why don't you package all the ingredients you need for the pie and assemble the pie once you get through security?

I'm fairly certain you would not get through security with that... Yup, pretty positive.

Just to clarify, they DO make ziploc bags big enough to hold an entire full-sized pie. There's one in my freezer right now with about 4 steaks in it. Not sure where you'd find one of these, but they exist.

I have no idea, but good luck with your pie and please let us know how everything turns out :luck::luck:.

Pre-allo may not agree on universal healthcare, affirmative action, or what constitutes a "good" MCAT score, but I think we're all very supportive of your pie 😉.

They might miss it anyways, during spring break I accidentally left a liter of Pepsi in my carry-on. They never caught it and I didn't even realize it till after the flight.

*resists making an "Is pie-smuggling a good EC to list" thread?*

😳

Worst case scenario you leave yourself an extra 15 minutes to check in - if they put the pie on the no-fly list, you step out of line and scarf it down. If they let it through you have a happy wife. Win either way. However, you've now piqued my curiosity...just how good are these pies? Should I be looking to procure one somehow? Will a pie hunting EC (370hrs) balance out a 2.9?

you are awesome, and my wife is going to love you for this information.

Those TSA guys may not let you get a freakin' nail clipper through security (they have their orders), but they are human and will certainly let you bring a PIE to your WIFE. Just don't try to hide it--carry it openly and be nonchalant about the whole thing. And if asked, definitely tell them who it's for (and what will happen to you if it doesn't reach the intended recipient).

Failure is not an option.

I am soooooo tempted to make an "Armybound LolCat" out of this photo 😳:

this pie is amazing. there's no way to convey its deliciousness to you.

unfortunately Marie Callenders is not very widely distributed across the US. Some pies are sold in the frozen food aisle of your local grocer, but not the double cream blueberry pies. If someone can attest otherwise, please advise.

Here is a description of said pie.. it's more awesome than this suggests.
Double Cream Blueberry
Creamy vanilla custard and sour cream top a bed of savory blueberries, enhanced with flavorful apples.

Wow savory AND flavorful? That's a win.

And sadly, that map seems to have a huge brown swath of useless across my path. Guess no delicious pie for me. 🙁 If you happen to fly from TX to Boston feel free to bring me one. 😀

I used to love Marie Callenders for their Boston Cream Pie (the Sky High variant). I once drove 4 hours round trip to get one. As of this summer, they're dead to me, however. They no longer sell that pie delicious cake/pie hybrid. Not even your blueberry pie can save them in my eyes.

This is one area where breeak may have the advantage. I believe the Parker House Hotel in Boston invented Boston Cream Pie (which is one of my favorite desserts in the whole world), and they're still known for the excellence of their version.

Thank you for the alert. It would be remiss of me not to take advantage of that before I leave Boston, I'll rectify it immediately.

You know, this makes me think we should start a thread where people can post their favorite culinary treat from their area, so that people on the interview trail can properly sample the offerings their potential new home might have. I mean, yes, a school may have wonderful research opportunities, excellent financial aid, a loving student body - but if it's a food wasteland I want no part of it. *shudder*

I will offer up the cuban sammich at Chez Henri in Cambridge. It's out of the way from all of the medical schools in Boston, but totally worth the trip. Must be paired with a mojito.

i still think this is the funniest post of the whole thread...:hardy:

I just saw this - girl, why do you need a fiance for that? With that on the table you could have one heck of a wedding night all by yourself. 😉

My coworker usually brings pie from LA. When asked about it by TSA she says, that if she doesnt get it here, her coworkers will kill her. That usually works. So your chances are pretty good

Oh, and also - Harvard is the bestest school evar.

Just wanted to hijack/ruin another perfectly good thread.
