Hey,

Im an applicant for residency this year, and I am debating whether to go on second looks. It seems to me that the second look doesnt have the potential to help much, but it could in fact harm the application. I especially don't want to go to second looks if it is customary to be pimped during morning rounds. Does anyone know if this happens or has it ever happened to someone? Are second look candidates expected to answer questions about medical knowledge? Trying to decide if it is even worth it to go to a second look. Thanks.

I didn't get pimped on my second look per se. But during rounds, I found I asked the occasional question (at the appropriate time obviously and generally to the less senior resident) and this sometimes lead to a clinical discussion. Don't bite off more than you can chew basically, and you should be just fine.

The second look is for you to see the program again and get a better feel for what a regular day there is like, not for a second interview. Getting pimped during a 2nd look would be a really good reason to walk out in the middle of the day and cross it off your list.

I know some attendings who are prone to pimp whoever is there, be it a resident, fellow, med student or applicant. I suppose if you said something really foolish it could hurt you. Doesn't happen too often though.

I personally question the utility of second looks in a match situation unless you know for a fact you are in the drivers seat. You may waste a lot of time and money getting your first five ranks in order only to fall to choice number 7 anyhow. It made more sense as. Med student where you would get to choose.

I went on one second look and was pimped. I expected to be asked questions, so it wasn't shocking. I think it's better they are actually engaging you rather than standing there quietly looking like an idiot. Plus, it gives you a chance to shine.

Thanks for the replies. So I signed up for two second visits today, both local. They are just didactic days, so there shouldn't be much heavy pimping, though I should be prepared for anything I guess.
