we didnt get any letters...too late
fu**!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

sorry for bad words - really ticked off at my school

Awww!! 🙁 🙁 That sucks!!!!!!! 😡 😡
Vent away!!! What school is this??

ah, uci... good memories...i hope it's not uci..... 🙄

oh my gawd, are you serious??? let me see if i understand this correctly - your letter-of-rec-service lost your letters? and none of the med schools got them? wow, that is horrible!!! is it too late to get them to med schools now? you should make your school write a letter or something to all the schools you applied to... that is just wrong...

feel free to vent away...

ouch dude.....sorry about that. i'd be ticked too.

my school is uci

and oddly enough, uci med didnt get my letter

now im frantically emailing 4+ schools that i havent heard anything from asking.."do u have it huh huh huh?"

at least i found out before school closed for holiday, but if they dont fax it....im going to cuss so much that even a truck driver would cover his ears (nvm that was a lame ass joke)

OMG, THAT'S TERRIBLE! I'm so sorry for you... 🙁

It happened to one of my friends two years ago and she missed a lot of deadlines because of that. But, our pre-med advisor sent a letter to all the med schools she was applying to and explained the situation. In the end, she got extensions from almost all the schools on her list. So, they were able to fax in the letters (she had to get copies of all her letters from all the profs) and her file was still considered by the committee.

Of course, that won't make up for the lost time and that's going to delay everything for you... but, it can still be fixed. Geez, that really sucks. Good luck! :luck:

1.) Demand that the person responsible for this sends a letter to all the schools asking for the extension and taking the blame upon themselves. Possibly get the Dean to intervene.

2.) If this doesn't work, there may be some basis for even legal action. Not that I would suggest that, just to let you know this is really pretty outrageous by any standard!

I hear you. If it makes you feel any better, my graduate advisor agreed to write me a letter in July, then avoided all my attempts to contact him, then informed me in mid-November that he wouldn't write it, because he didn't know me well enough. And so here I am, having been rejected from one allopathic school and haven't heard anything from the other 14....
so basically, I guess when you have a ton of applicants and a complicated process with poor odds, some of us are going to have horror stories and get screwed in some way. Keep your chin up, we just have to persevere....

U Penn emailed me a few weeks ago to tell me that one of my letters was sent unsigned, and therefore not acceptable. I'm non-trad, so I had to contact professors I haven't seen in 3 years. Not to mention this prof was going to Japan for the balance of the month. Luckily, I caught the prof and she sent another, but I had heart attack-intense fears that she might not have signed any of the ones that went out. I haven't heard anything else, so maybe it was just the one. :meanie:

It's a monster pain just to get the letters, and everything I've read suggests they're the most important part of your app. But what really sucks is that lack of control, you're not able to drop these letters off in the mail yourself so you know they get there. All I could do was send pre-addressed (typed), prestamped envelopes via fed ex, and do you think I had problems and times I thought I was screwed, you bet.

Things do tend to work out as long as you stick to it and hope for the best. I certainly hope your time and money isn't gone because of this.

I feel for you. When I applied, my advisor sent the wrong person's letters to my schools, and vice versa. It was a little trouble to work out, but we caught it early on.

Sorry to hear that, I hate when stupid mistakes add stress to an already stressful situation.

Oh my gosh, that is terrible! I hope that it works out!

I'm with you on this one! I had all the letters that I needed from my undergrad school, but I just started my masters and some schools required a letter from my grad advisor. I asker her and she said she didn't know me enough, which I understand since I have been in the program for like 3 months and have seen her a total of maybe 5 times... But still!! It pissed me off because my apps were not complete and they were waiting for a letter that I couldn't get! But, the point of all this is: I wrote a letter to those med schools that required a grad school letter and explained the situation. Most of them (not all unfortunately) made an exception and accepted my file as complete. Try that. Don't leave your file incomplete without any explanations. Good luck to you, I know it sucks! :luck:

😱 incompetency at its best, if ive learned anything from this process its that it sucks and that unless you put it in an envelope and sent it off yourself, you better double check...i hope it works out for you...

Yeah, that's exactly what I did. My advisor was "kind" enough to let me put his contact info in my letter in case the schools had any questions about the situation, but still...to have had great letters from undergrad and everything else in early, only to be tripped up by a stupid technicality with the grad letter...so frustrating, and really took the wind out of my sails for a bit. We'll see if my letter makes any difference...good luck! :luck:

Wait, does every letter have to be actually signed, or just the original and the rest are copies?

For the OP - this clearly sounds like a basis for some reimbursement by your school (possibly by legal action). This is horrendous.

I gave each of my recommenders envelopes and asked them to sign each of the letters and the back of the envelope to indicate they sealed it. I never got to see the letters or make copies. But I'm not sure what she did, I believe she printed them all off of official university letterhead and just missed signing the one... that's what I'm hoping anyway.

hey caligirl,
I can't believe uci would make such a bonehead mistake like that! I'm sure they will fax it!! If not, let that truck driver out!!!

i'm so sorry caligirl, that really sucks. Why didn't they tell you you still weren't complete? Couldn't you check your status on-line to see what was missing? Can't your pre-med advisor intervene and call the school? 🙁

Nope. These things truly happened.

UCLA did something like this to me. I applied for the MD/PhD program and the Phd people lost my application. I kept checking and checking... and heck no, they just sat on it until the last moment when they said... 'oops we're sorry, we didn't know that they had lost your application, but it's too late, the last interview day was yesterday. Better luck next year.'

That was it... no: 'we'll try to do something about it' or 'we're sorry we totally messed up your application, why don't you appeal.' Just the 'oops... better luck next year'.

And there was nothing that anyone could do about it.

At the time, I was heartbroken and sick over it, not to mention mad, but eh, you get up and you go on.

I feel for anyone that has to go through something like this. All I can say is, that you wouldn't want to go to a school that disorganized and stupid anyway. 😀
