What's the deal with Pitt cardiology. How is it considered in terms of national reputation. Strengths/weaknesses. thanks

Limited recollections from past interview:

Strengths: High volume tertiary referral center, large program that is fairly balanced in all areas including cath/EP/transplant/nuclear, good mix of basic science/clinical work that few programs have, huge transplant volume, large EP and cath programs if you want to stay, payed to take call

Weaknesses: Large program (if you think this is a negative, one of largest programs in nation), the city of Pittsburgh (depends on who you talk to), overnight call

As for national reputation, I think this is pretty subjective outside of a few top notch programs in cardiology (i.e. Duke, Brigham, Mass General, etc). I would say you can argue a huge number of programs fall outside the top 10 but in the next the next tier of programs, including Pitt. Rankings aren't nearly as neat as they are for medicine. Look for mentors you think you're research is going to match and strength in the area you're going into. If your primary focus is research and academic medicine, NIH $ is a somewhat objective measure.

Overnight call is an advantage. you increase your pay to about $60,000 per year and hardly any fellows take call from home. Since it's a large program, you never have to take call more than 2-3 times per month.

yup, you make money when on call. call isn't easy...but you get paid moonlighting money. my husband is a cardio fellow here. its funny, people actually fight to take call there...b/c you make good money.
