That is a fantastic screen name. I've been saying that joke for years, but nobody really likes it except me.

Anyway ... you can live downtown/strip district, it's easy to get to UPMC/Magee - 10 - 15 minutes with no traffic. Shadyside, Squirrel Hill, Lawrenceville, Bloomfield are all really easy, maybe a little quicker commute. Southside is probably the ideal place to live, in my opinion. Close to everything, and very hip.

Actually, if you're OB, you'll be up so early that you could even live further out if you wanted to buy a place.

Lots of options, e-mail for specifics

I did an away at Pittsburgh in plastics and a fair amount of our cases were at Magee. I lived in Squirrel Hill and it was great. A straight shot down Forbes (I think that was the name of the road) and early in the morning there was no traffic.

I'm an FP resident at St. Margaret, and we do some of our rotations at Magee. I live in the North Hills, and it only takes me about 15 minutes to get to Magee. You can even live north of the city and get there pretty quick. It would probably be really quick from Shadyside or downtown - like someone else pointed out, you'll have to be there so early that traffic won't be much of an issue. The traffic in Oakland can get busy later on in the day, but when you'll be getting to work it won't be a problem.

So what is "further out?" We don't want to be too far away from the hospital or have a terrible commute. We like Pittsburgh alot, but we'd like to own something or at least have a little more room/privacy.

Any scoop on where residents with families usually live? Thanks in advance...you can private message me too if that's easier.

I went to medical school in Pittsburgh....we lived in Shadyside with a preschool aged daughter....Pittsburgh has bad public schools but awesome parks. Shadyside is about 15 minutes from Magee by car at 5:00am...parking is kind of hard around the UPMC campus though..."dahntahn" (downtown) is also about 15 minutes...

DOtobe...nice pic of Big Ben

Here we go Steelers!!!

Go Black and Gold!!! BTW, where in Detroit are you going? I'm here/there (?) now.
I lived in "the 'burgh" while at Pitt for undergrad. I lived in Shadyside, you can ride your bike or walk, which is what I usually did. Public tran was good when I was there (late '80's to early 90's). The South Hills are very close, and you can take the "T". Does it still run?

As far as traffic. Haa . Yes, the tunnels suck, but it is NOTHING like Chicago or Detroit. Something I never understood about the tunnels...if you are afraid of being in the tunnels, doesn't logic dictate that you would SPEED UP to get through as fast as you could, rather than slow down? The question would keep me up at night.

I meant that the Steelers are going to Detroit. Unfortunately, I'm not going with them

And the "tunnel slow down" is one of the things about Pittsburgh that annoys me the most. But you can't beat the view once you come out of the Fort Pitt tunnel... 👍

for those of you who have trained in pittsburgh...is it possible to live downtown and commute to magee? do many residents live downtown?

i've grown up in pgh and gone to medical school here, living in shadyside mostly but in the south side right after college. i would definitely not recommend living downtown - nobody actually lives there, just works there. it is dead after 6 pm. i actually have only met one or two people in my life that have lived downtown.

i'd recommend squirrel hill with shadyside as a close second. they are both really cool communities, close to magee with lots of parks and restaurants around. lots of grad students and young families. the south side is fun and close... but i lived there for a few years and just got sick of being woken up at 2 am every night when the bars let out. anyways, my 2 cents.

I found this pic...but it still doesn't do the view justice.

Is shadyside or squirrel hill walking distance to UPMC Presby?

If you live on the South Side, could you take the "T" and then walk to Presby?

Shadyside/Squirrel Hill are ~2-3 miles away making it quite a long walk. Most people drive in to presby. If you rotate at UPMC shadyside, thats a different story 🙂

i currently live in squirrel hill, and i definitely recommend this neighborhood to anyone considering buying a house. it is only a 10-15 minute drive to magee/presby/montefiore, and it has lower property taxes than shadyside. there are plenty of things to do in squirrel hill, and another plus is that it is quiet.
if you're just looking to rent an apartment, i would suggest shadyside, squirrel hill, or the southside. like someone else mentioned, nobody lives in the downtown area, because there is nothing to do there.

here's my scoop on the different neighborhoods:

shadyside: hip area with cute stores on walnut street. also lots of bars in this area and close to the hospital (10-15 min drive). the negatives are higher property taxes and overall more expensive housing than areas such as oakland and squirrel hill.

oakland: medstudents live in a place called ruskin hall. there are also condos on streets such as dithridge which are pretty decent. otherwise, i don't know too many people who live in oakland, other than undergrads. housing is pretty cheap here and depending on where you live, you can walk to magee or presby/montefiore. i would personally not live here though because of the undergrads.

squirrel hill: great neighborhood with parks (schenley park and frick park)
and lots of trees. generally a quiet neighborhood where many families live. forbes ave and murray ave in squirrel hill have many restuarants and stores. i think it is probably the best close neighborhood to the hospitals. you will need to drive to the hospital though because buses don't run very often in pittsburgh

southside: very hip, up-and-coming area with the new condos off of carson st as well as the new southside works. has great coffee shops and bars. however, it is a bit too industrial for me--few trees, lots of warehouse-looking buildings. very close the hospital as well (5-10 min drive)

bloomfield: the little italy of pgh, with great restaurants and bars all over liberty ave. very cheap rent, but also not my favorite neighborhood because of the sparcity of trees and recreation. but still a great neighborhood. close to upmc shadyside (5-10 min), 15-20 min from magee and presby/monty

south hills & north hills: great neighborhoods with great houses for affordable prices. many families live out here, but i don't know too many people who are willing to commute to these areas. the ride is sweet in the morning (20 min) but if traffic gets bad it can take 30-40 min to commute.
i would personally live in the other areas i described above.

pm with any questions!

Duh!!! Sorry for the misunderstanding 😳

BTW, where are you in DO school?

Go STEELERS!

Thank you so much! It's really helpful to have a starting place. I'm feeling alot better about Pittsburgh now that I read this thread. I wasn't too familiar with housing costs and taxes in this area. It's really nice to know we can buy something and still be w/in 15 minutes or so of the hospital. Squirrel Hill sounds like a good choice for families.

Again, Thanks for taking the time to reply and post such helpful hints.

My position in the hierarchy. I got a great education at LECOM.

DOtobe... you forgot to mention a great education/training that you're getting at UPMC St. Margaret also!

Now for the $25K question (as posed earlier by my 6 y/o cousin whom I was babysitting this evening): Does Squirrel Hill have lots of squirrels?
