PKB on update?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
What is PKB?

PKB is a three-letter abbreviation that may refer to:

The only one that really makes any sense is the National Awakening Party of Indonesia tbh.

Sorry mimelim I meant phi beta kappa! 😀

But maybe pot calling the kettle black should be a society

If you have 3000 posts, you should know the answer to this.

Nobody cares about PBK.

Hey, I got one of those, too! Not from PBK exactly, but the Golden Key. Honestly, I think it'd be an enormous resume booster. I play to update my application as soon as the fee posts! Then just need to send word to the

Caribbean.

Obviously, being inducted into PBK does not impress the vascular surgeon. Seems to argue against an update.
What is the fee?
Being inducted is still nice on the resume and will impress some people.
Thank you! It's ~$90. I am expecting a publication but if that doesn't happen in time, you would not recommend updating with this alone correct?

Do you really feel the need to provide updates. It seems like you've been having a good cycle. Did some schools say they want updates as proof of your continued interest?
Yes a few seemed to emphasise about keeping in touch with any changes to application. Not sure if an update is annoying or shows interest

I honestly had no idea what PBK or PKB was/is, so I googled it. None of them made any sense (since the acronym given was PKB), so I posted asking about it. One of my biggest pet peeves is when people use acronyms in situations where people may not know them or when they aren't easy to look up. This of course is exacerbated by misspellings or misuse of words. I don't really care if people misspell things, if it doesn't impact things, but I've been burned enough times on the wards now by medical students or other providers using non-standard acronyms or misspelling things to really start to harp on those behind me in our program and apparently I've started doing it on SDN too. (3-4 threads last week or so).

Even if you google PBK, you have to go to the 9th link on google to get to the right one.

As for Phi Beta Kappa, what information does it confer to adcoms that your grades/ECs/profile doesn't? If the answer is nothing, then why should anyone care about it?

You're right, I'm not including it on the update. I'll make sure to spell it out next time

I wanted to know if it was something worth updating about and I got my answer--thanks for the congrats!

I think everyone gets into it now so it may not be as prstigious

We don't care about stuff like PBK.

Actually, one of my interviewers at State U Med commented positively on it. It was a closed-file interview, so he said that he knew my academics were strong from the PBK award.

Getting into PBK is evidence of a proven history of academic success. Getting into PKB, on the other hand, is evidence of upstream activation of RTKs, or maybe Gi/o-coupled GPCRs like the fMLP receptor that can activate PI3K via G beta gamma. Both are important.

Yeah, agreed. I paid the $90 when I was inducted and it was worth it. I have had people comment on it, especially if they were also PBK - there's some fondness there. And it may mean something at your specific undergrad, etc, who knows.

That doesn't mean it's update-worthy at this point, however. If I were you I would only include it if you are sending an update anyway for another reason (i.e. pub).
