So I've looked online for like 30 minutes now and I can't find this...Does anyone know where to find a list or ranking of how many students get placed into internships or residencies from each school? I heard that Miss. State was #1 last year and I'm not sure if this is true. I'd like to find out how well different schools do this

You can try to contact the American Association of Veterinary Clinicians, they run the Veterinary Internship and Residency Matching Program. I tried looking through the site but could not find anything. They may be able to e-mail you more specific data. Here is their website http://www.virmp.org/

Penn had the highest percentage of matched for internships and residencies, at 74%. Penn, Auburn, Florida, Missouri, and Tennessee all had at least 70% match last year.

Where did you get this information?

It's in the match report on VIRMP that's available to program directors.

It's a little misleading just looking at the VIRMP report and drawing conclusions, since it doesn't tell you how many people didn't match initially but were able to scramble and find an internship/residency, or who went onto an internship/residency that doesn't participate in the match (like most equine internships, for example). In my class, almost all of my classmates who wanted internships got into a program, even if they didn't match initially.

I know we were required to fill a survey for the AVMA just before graduation that asked us what our post-graduation plans were... maybe that would give you more accurate data about how many people per school went onto internships after graduation?

This is a little off topic, but what is the application process like for internships and residencies? I know that some programs match using VIRMP, but what are they looking for in an application? GPA? Extracurriculars?

It's sort of similar to the application for vet school- you have to submit your transcript, three letters of recommendation from vets you've worked with (preferably in your clinical year), honors/scholarships/etc, a personal statement, and a resume/CV.

I think that's a great point. And even if you did know the total numbers, my guess is they are all pretty close and vary from year to year. So you certainly wouldn't want to pick a school based on how their graduates did in the match.

GPA/Class rank and recommendations are a lot more important on whether you match or not. The school you graduated from is pretty insignifanct, as long as it's an AVMA-accredited school.

That is what I have been told as well, particularly if you have a peculiar area of interest like enviro med or one of the fields that doesn't use the match as extensively such as lab animal. I was also told that in zoo med there are a lot of internships that come and go with funding, and consequently are not in the match program.

Yup, anatomic pathology, clinical pathology, laboratory animals medicine, and a large scattering of "others" don't go through the match. Nice in some ways, a PITA in others. I would definitely say your letters of recommendation are THE most important thing in getting any internship or residency (not that grades etc. do not count - but your LORS really tell these people what you would be like to WORK with, which is hugely important in a working environment such as a residency that is not so academics focused). Get to know your profs and clinicians early and make a (good) name for yourself.
