Let's say someone needed to live between Bethesda & Baltimore. What are the best, safest places?

The closer to Bethesda, the more expensive it's going to be I think. It will be nicer areas though. Baltimore is known to be sketchy, and there certainly are some parts I wouldn't recommend, but there are some really nice neighborhoods too. If you are looking to live in the city, PM me and I can try to help you out more. Around Baltimore (10-20 minutes) there are around 10 universities, so if you are looking for temporary/cheap housing (or at least cheaper than the city) you could look at some of the housing more students live in. I guess where you live might also depend on how long you're living there. If you are working or doing a rotation at UMD, I know they help their residents out with finding living so they might have some info for you. I'd assume some of the other hospitals would do the same. Not sure how useful that was, but let me know if I can help more!

I go to school at the University of Maryland and live in downtown Baltimore. There are a several decent places to live in the city that have a lot of students, residents, young professionals, etc. You can live in a relatively safe area but it is still Baltimore.

You would probably be better off living between Baltimore and Bethesda because the commute is not easy, but any commute to Bethesda is not going to be enjoyable. Like the above post said, there are a lot of other universities in the area that would have reasonable housing options also. Probably not that helpful, but if you have any questions about Baltimore, let me know. Good luck.

The DC area sucks, and your commute anywhere is going to be a nightmare. Rockville is cheaper than Bethesda, and the commute is not much longer. I would not advise living in/around Baltimore, if you do residency at NNMC.

I would recommend Gaithersburg. Not too far from NNMC and he can hop 370 towards Baltimore. Plenty of good neighborhoods.

You really ought to specify why you have this requirement, as in one (spouse/S.O.) is doing a residency in Baltimore and you are at NNMC, or if this to accommodate someone with a non-medical-training need to be in Baltimore.

It would be a residency-issue for both people if it were to happen.

ugh, that would suck.

Just as an added piece of info most of the traffic on that part of the beltway is going from the north to the west so living closer to Bethesda, I think, would be better as you would be going against traffic.

I live in downtown Silver Spring. It's 15mins to NNMC in the AM. It's within walking distance from WRAMC. It's 30-40mins from downtown Baltimore. It's cheaper than Bethesda. Many options if you are open to renting. If buying, that's another story. Just a thought.

a bit further east is laurel. it's right off of 95 and is a nice community with cheaper prices if you are looking to buy. i lived there and commuted to WRAMC and NNMC, and it is about (from what i remember) equidistant to baltimore. definitely a shorter drive to BWI than Washington-Reagan or Dulles. anything up 95 is significantly cheaper thatn rockville/gaithersburg, plus if you are trying to split the difference to baltimore there really is no good way (as far as i know, unless that road they all dream about finally was built) to get from 295 to 95 without going surface roads or the beltway.

i moved in 2007, so things may have changed. i sold right before the market tanked, luckily.

The Maryland intercounty connector (tollway currently under construction that will connect 270/370 just south of Gaithersburg to 95 just south of Laurel) is scheduled to be completed in late 2011.

The OP should consider individual needs when determining where to live. I agree that somewhere between Laurel and College Park on the 95 would be ideal with regards to equality of commute;however, if one is a surgeon and the other radiologist, the EROAD specialty should defer to the one who actually works for a living. Keep in mind, the commute north on 95 into Baltimore is infinitely faster than the outer loop of the beltway to Bethesda. I live in Silver Spring and was at UM Med in 35 minutes from getting into my car.
