I'm going to Europe for a month with 3 really good friends. I've been planning this trip since last year. It's going to be amazing. Can't make it to the Olympics in Beijing unfortunately.

Going to Europe for 6 weeks!!!! Going on a cruise with my mom for 3 weeks and then backpacking by myself for 3-4 weeks (not sure how long yet)! Actually I could use any advice people have to give me. I am trying to go to Spain, Portugal, Italy, Greece, Switzerland, Germany and France so if you have any advice (especially for a girl travelling alone) I would love to hear it!

Well, you don't have to travel alone, you know. I could change my plans, I am pretty flexible 😉

haha SWEET! South Africa is also on my list of places I want to see, but I think I am going to try and do some rotations in Africa my 4th year so I will hopefully get to see it then. I am actually really looking forward to going alone and meeting random people along the way... I think it will be a good "calm before the storm" so to speak. Having said that... if anyone is going to be in Europe in June... a little SDN lunch might be fun!

EDIT: Sorry, I thought you said South Africa, not America... my bad!! I want to do some volunteering in South America as well haha so maybe I will do some touring then! I have always wanted to hike in Costa Rica!

He wrote South AMERICA, not South AFRICA, just so you know.

I actually read it the same way you did. Bizarre, huh? I guess we're both itching to travel there!

Eat, drink and be merry...and look back and see how silly I was for thinking that I was going to have to reapply for 2009 and go to an SMP program (cries).

Things are going well for you this cycle, then? I've been rooting for you.

Haha. Unfortunately, no. I've still got an ace up my sleeve though. Luckily at my very top first choice, McGill. I'd go here over any university...Jhop, Cornell, Columbia, whatever. I'm a QC resident so my chances at McGill are okay...then again, there's always the worry that they'll look at my GPA and just toss my app out (not unlikely).

Nothing exciting here. I have 2 more classes from my past that I need to replace the grades on, so it's summer classes and some camping for me.

studying for MCAT >.<... when is a good time to actually take the test.. after August or September? I know scores only last for 3 years and it needs to be within 3 years when the 1st term actually starts... so my question is does med school usually start august or september?

My advice is not to pack so much travelling in such little time. I think this is a mistake alot of backpackers make. You could spend 3-4 weeks in Italy alone, easily. I hope that I can save enough money to bum around Europe for most of the summer before med school when I apply.

As for this summer... research of some sort hopefully.

working my arse off to have money to furnish my apt, pay the deposit, set up utilities, buy a laptop, etc. doesn't that sound exciting?

my husband might be getting a second job though so that we can take a trip to africa to see his family.

I really, really, really want to go on a long tour of South America and spend some time in the Galapagos.... but I wonder if my time would be better spent earning some money instead of spending all my savings.

You are only young once. Your time is worth more than whatever miniscule wage you can command at this point in your life unless you really need the money to survive. This is my philosophy atleast.

When are you applying? I'd suggest you take it in April or early May so you have your scores in hand by the time you submit your AMCAS.

Finishing papers and my thesis 24/7 until June, then not opening a textbook until August. 🙂

I think I may do the one thing I won't be able to do for a long time. I want to get up every day and work out, then spend the day at the pool, then go home to drink beer and play Xbox with my friends before we never see each other again.

going on a Contiki to the Greek Islands (Mykonos, Santorini, Ios) and Athens with my three best friends from college.

Working June-July

Starting med school in August!!! 🙂

I'm going to read up on theoretical mathematics. '

Yes I know, I'm a nerd.

Details? 🙂 I've been working on some imaging techniques and playing around with Fourier transforms, it's gotten me back in the mood for some math. 🙂

hopefully going to Europe or South America with the boyfriend (I deserve it after 4 years of premed hell + senior year fun = working 2 jobs + 12 interviews + thesis + regular load of classes at a top 5 college) 🙂

I had to take this semester off because I got mono... so most likely I'll spend my whole summer taking classes, doing some volunteer work, working. If they don't offer the classes I need, I'll spend 2 months volunteering at a health clinic in Guatemala.

@maxprime, Hmm, I was thinking along the lines of real analysis and maybe a little bit of analytical mechanics. Lower div Calculus was so boring🙁(I'm a sophomore btw), I figured I might as well learn(in depth) some of the derivations. I think it'll be pretty fun.

Btw, and someone tell me how to use the quote function? Whenever I quote, it doesn't put the name of the original poster.

I'll probably be in England, France, and Italy during June. We don't have a specific itinerary yet, so I can't tell you exactly where we'll be.

I'm actually studying for mcats in the summer of my soph - junior year... i might apply after jr or sr year... not sure yet. Would it be better to take it aug or sept... the problem arises when i apply after sr year and I have to get it within the 3 years limit

I'm thinking about hiking over to London and waiting tables for a month or two. Subsistence living at its finest.

Going to work in an orphanage in Tanzania with a professor and some of my good friends for 2 weeks. We're also going to stop in Italy for a night beforehand to take in the scenes. I'm so excited cause I've never traveled before and I've always wanted to!! 🙂 I'm also going to be shadowing in my favorite hospital as well as coordinating my thesis at the University back home for a month 🙂. ...oh and MCATs in June 😳

Moving to Santa Barbara at the end of May, going diving off the coast of Channel Islands and Catalina, and taking biology 1 & 2 during summer sessions at UCSB to get most of my year of bio out of the way so I can finish in 2 years without pre-reqs boning me.

I'm thinking of trying to get a summer research position, but so far it have been extremely difficult. I am a freshman at a smaller school, and it seems like many of the desirable positions are already taken by upperclassmen.

I am also considering working as an NA over the summer, but I would greatly prefer it if I could do research.

Any thoughts?

Continuing current research through the summer, taking MCAT and filling out med school apps. Not much else can be done

Depending on financial aid either..

A.) Traveling all over Europe and/or Asia

B.) Working two jobs to make some money before school starts.

*praying for a full ride so I can go to Europe!*

Most summer research programs are for sophomores/juniors. All are very competitive. However, in your position, I would contact a few PI's and see if they would let you observe, keyword observe, their work in the lab through the summer. By the end of the summer, chances are you'll get to do something hands on, especially if you take lots of notes during your observation and show great interest. And you'll also get a good letter of recommendation that you can use when you apply for future research programs.

Take Orgo and Italian at (hopefully) Harvard but more likely Northeastern, maybe RA at a dance program, and dance. Alot. Oh yes, and hopefully make enough money to buy textbooks for next semester.

Do you need a good SAT score to be competitive for SMDEP?

Say you have a good GPA but bad, bad SAT's...will this hurt you?

Went sort of this way in Summer 06. Definitely hit Interlaaken Switzerland (which almost anyone who's been there will recommend). It is the "Extreme Sports Capital of the World." Lots of fun outdoors stuff to do and it is one of the prettiest places in the world.

As far as Italy, Florence was my favorite, but I also hear Capri is unbelievable. Cinque Terra comes highly recommended. You probably should go to Rome, although i wasn't very impressed by it.

In Germany, I only went to Munich and it was pretty cool, although not my favorite at all.

If you have any questions about any of these places or where to stay, send me a message. All the places we stayed were pretty cheap.

YES!! SMDEP @ Columbia!

Now you are getting excited when I am not excited anymore? I just realized that I'll be spending my summer working and studying. Thats not exactly a VACATION. Not to mention I am totally freaking about this semester now. I have to get all A's and get my name on the presidential list.

Thanks for the slap back to reality 😉 lol. Physics, here I come.

planning a 30-day trip to Europe with my friend. We are thinking Paris, Bruges, Amsterdam, Berlin, Neuschwanstein, Vienna, Salzburg, Venice, Florence and Rome, via the Eurail pass. Would that be too much? If so, which ones to skip?? So hard to choose, all the European cities look so enticing!

Any suggestions and recommendations?
