Hi,
Please explain the difference between Oxygen content and concentration.I am really confused with this topic.Is Oxygen concentration in blood and oxygen content the same??
Then is O2 present in blood is diffrent from dissoled in plasma???

. So if I understand it correctly, oxygen content is one dissolved in blood and expressed in mmHg since it's a gas, and concentration is in terms of how much is bound to Hb, but perhaps someone else can add to this.

so in simpler terms,

dissolved Oxygen in plasma produces partial pressure of O2, i.e PO2,
and it is this partial pressure (PO2) which keeps O2 bound to Hb.

This is almost correct, but not quite.

Oxygen content (paO2) = Oxygen bound to hemoglobin + free oxygen dissolved in plasma. Measured in mmHg. Used to directly measure total amount of oxygen circulating in blood. Measurement requires invasively obtaining an arterial blood sample for gas analysis.

Oxygen saturation (saO2) = (oxyhemoglobin)/(total hemoglobin in blood) * 100%. Measured in percent. Ignores free oxygen dissolved in plasma. Used to determine amount of oxygen bound to hemoglobin, and serves as an effective proxy for determining oxygenation status (because as someone else noted, nearly 100% of plasma oxygen is bound to hemoglobin). Can be used to approximate paO2 via paO2/saO2 hemoglobin dissociation curve. Can be easily and non-invasively measured in real time using a finger/ear/nose/lip probe.
