I'm a non-trad and had a bad semester in the early 1990's. Since my gpa was <2.0 for the semester I was automatically on probation for the next semester to get a 2.0. This wasn't on my transcript and I didn't realize it when I submitted AMCAS and answered No to the institutional action question. What should I do now? Thank you.

This was a post from before...

I was busted for underage drinking my freshman year. I came clean on AMCAS though. I would write a brief letter to your schools saying you forgot about the incident while working on amcas (I forgot about mine until the day before I submitted AMCAS), provide a brief explanation, and say you have learned from the mistake (whether you did or not as long as you dont have anymore alcohol violations).

Note to everyone!!! BE completely honest and forthcoming about everything.

I am a female non-traditional student. I came to this site looking for other african-american 30+ non-traditional students that I can share this journey with. If you are out there, please let me know. I am currently studying for mcats for this 08-19-06 test and plan to apply for the 2011 class. I have four children and a husband,, so does that make 5? I have just taken a position as a medical sales rep. I am excited about that, but medicine is where my heart is. Let me know that I am not alone.

I was on probation as well. I came clean on AMCAs even though the dean at my undergrad school told me it was more of an "academic status" than a disciplinary action. Has your AMCAS been verified yet? If so (or if it is verified within the next week or so) I would make the change and resubmit (assuming there is no additional cost). We are still pretty early in the cycle.

Are you looking specifically for african-american 30+ non-trads who have been on academic probation for some reason?

I think institutional action means things like academic dishonesty not your grades being low. I wouldn't worry.

OH NO, Youre Screwed!!!!!

Or it won't be a big deal. It's is an honest mistake. You probably won't have to do anything unless you get questioned about it in an interview. But it was over 10 years ago, and that's a great excuse.

I was also put on "disciplinary probation" the first semester of my freshman year for a drinking incident. It sounds really bad, but it was basically a warning. I had no idea that I had to disclose this! How bad will this look to an admissions committee? My school didn't even put it on my record.

I tend to agree with Wookey here.

How do you know if you're under academic probation? Does having any GPA <2.0 automatically put on in AP status? Is this for all schools?

sorry, stupid question..

does 1 quarter/semester of AP constitute as "institutional action"?

no record = no worries

Were you ever the recipient of any institutional action by any college or medical school for unacceptable academic performance or conduct violation, even though such action may not have interrupted your enrollment or required you to withdraw?

I don't see where the grey area is... you were put on probation, you must report it

If you're looking for others in your position you'll probably want to start your own thread, rather than hiding a reply in an existing one. Many fewer people will see it here.

Also, you'll probably want to check out the nontrad forum. There might not be people in your exact position, but you'll find many with similar experiences.

Good Luck! :luck:

Even if it isn't on your transcript, I'd report it. I had a similar auto-probation scenario when I let an Incomplete remain on my transcript over the summer. It didn't show up in my file, but I reported it on my AMCAS. It was asked about in a couple of interviews, but no one really cared. (Assuming you have a decent "here's how I've changed since then" response.)

Because your AMCAS is sumbitted, I'd draft a very brief paragraph explaining what happened and what you learned, and then send it on to the schools to which you've applied. Let them know that it isn't on your transcript, and you didn't remember it until after submitting.

Good Luck! :luck:

Here's a related question:

I literally found out 10 minutes ago that 22 years ago, I dropped out of 3 courses and may be the world's longest academic probationist. No, I haven't been in a coma, but I only remembered taking one course at this particular university.

#1. Where do I address this on my Amcas
#2. Will they use these 2 decade old grades to pork me on my gpa?

Help!

is he making fun of it?... again I wish sarcastic inflection was somehow made easier online...

I'll tell you when I use sarcasm and you'll like it!

Actually, I was/am serious. I was finishing up my ******ed (no offense to anyone with mental deficits here) TMDSAS app and then I noticed on one of my transcripts a class which I had forgotten - 22 years ago. I called the school to see if it was perhaps a mistake, and lo and behold, not only was it a mistake, but she gave me the whole redacted version of how I am 22 years delinquent and the prof's finally just gave in and placed a "D" on my transcript.

I gasped!!! A "D"! I did get one C on my undergrad transcript once long ago, but a D?

I dropped out of crappy CSULB because I was given a choice of joining the navy or going to jail.

Where do I explain this, on my Amcas without ruining my highly edited, already satisfied with, essay?

🙂 Arigato

You would be better off posting inthis forum. Maybe you posted here by accident because i'm not sure how this fits in 😕

I did complete an undergrad degree in there somewhere (and I was only 17 when I went to CSULB).

Do you have any idea, what to do with this on my Amcas?

Thanks!!!

If it's on your transcript during the same time that you were taking classes to finish your undergrad degree, I think it will have to be listed (especially if it was at the same school). but hopefully you have an upward trend afterwards so you can just explain the situation. 22 years ago is a long time. you probably just retook your pre-med classes for the MCAT right? so maybe they'll focus on that. but i do think you'll have to include it.
