I was going to apply this cycle, but I decided to wait another year due to my family problems.. My dad is at his last stage of alzheimer's, and with short of money and everything, I decided not to take DAT and care for daddy..

I have another year, and hope this year will be good..
I havn't taken my DAT yet, but I'm studying little by little when I'm watching him, and hopefully i will be ready by next year and take the DAT during like march or so..

What are some good schools to apply if you have a lot of experience in dental field? I've been working in the dentist office since in high school, and my position now at my work is like an office manager. I can chairside every procedures, impression, ordering, insurance, copay, name it all what to do in the general dentist and I will know how to do..

problem is my GPA.. with rough years with my family situation, I havn't been doing well. My GPA overall is 3.3 with SciGPA of 3.1..

What are some good schools to look at before I apply to?
Please help me out.. I'm desperate...
I would've love to take DAT this summer, but things are not working out for me right now.... please let me know what are my chances and what to do.

I'm in asian, and in Virginia. I really want to get into the MCV.. any ideas to whom they went in the MCV? I want to stay close to home since mom will need support..

Thank you for the replies, I really appreciate it!
God bless you all!

I'm sorry to hear about your dad, I wish you all the best.

I think if you bring your science GPA up a bit and do well on your DAT you should be able to get interviews somewhere. I would apply broadly and hope for the best. I say this because I don't know much about MCV, maybe checking their website can give you some insight on their incoming class statistics.

In regards to your experience, I think you will have an upper edge with the lab work and familiarity with restorative materials. I've heard from current dental students that any prior knowledge in the field will help.

Hope this helps and goodluck!

That's an understandable situation. That's sweet of you to take care of your father. =)

Also, I feel like feeling ready to apply was an important factor, especially for myself. I wanted to somewhat feel like a competitive applicant.

There's a lot that goes on to applying. One of the few stresses that I had was getting letter of recommendations, asking for them, preparing for them (because some of them will want to interview you, etc). Make sure you work on that if you haven't already so you'll have that done well before you apply. I got all of my letters of recommendation, but they were all asked for in the spring, which was pretty close to applying and added to the stress.

You do not have to schedule to take the DATs now. If you have some free time this summer, I would recommend just start studying for the DATs, but don't stretch the DAT studying out too long because you will FORGET a lot of it if you just drop it for a month (happened to me during schooling). So, only start studying for DATs when you have a future month in mind, and begin however months earlier leading up that month you proposed.

Your GPA isn't so bad. Apply early if you can. And work on increasing that GPA =) There's still a decent chance if you do well on DATs as well.

I'm also sure that schools would love to know that you have dental experience. I don't know which schools though, but I don't think having that hurts for applying to any school.

Good luck =)

If MCV is your dream school, set up an appointment with them and explain your situation. It doesn't sound like you can attend school full time this year since you are helping with your dad. Can you take a couple of science classes at night and study during the day? Good luck!

Kill the DAT and you will get in.

If you can, buy 5 tests version of Crack Dat Pat. do them over and over.

If you worry about your RC & Bio, read campbell while you are at it.
